Celebrate The Joy Of Music Making
In the interactive Experience and Encore Galleries, guests can play instruments from around the world like the ones on display throughout the museum.
The Experience Gallery is a place to explore self-made musical soundsand more importantly, a place to let loose and have fun. Find and celebrate your inner musician while playing instruments such as a Javanese gamelan, a West African djembe, a Peruvian harp, a theremin, and more. The hands-on space is fun for families and guests of all ages.

How And Where Were Mims Musical Instruments Acquired
The museums collection of more than 13,600 instruments and associated artifacts was acquired in the geographic and cultural regions where these instruments are played and have the most cultural relevance. Approximately 6,800 of these are on exhibit at a time. Some of the instruments in MIMs collection were, until recently, still being played in their places of origin and were subsequently donated by their makers or the musicians who owned and played them. Some were created by artisans expressly for MIM. Others were purchased from other collectors or collections. The museums experts have gone to great lengths to acquire the instruments, sometimes traveling to extremely remote locations and regions of unrest. The instruments were selected for their fine construction, the reputation of their makers, their special provenance, or their connection to significant performers. Instruments and artifacts from MIMs Geographic Galleries focus on five major global regions: Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the United States and Canada.

This exhibit features standout instruments remarkable in beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural significance. Eighty exceptional instruments fill this gallery, including some of the finest from the museums collection and more than twenty loans from renowned museums, private collections, and musicians worldwide.

What Is The Oldest Instrument At Mim
MIMs oldest instrument is displayed in the Orientation Gallery: a paigu goblet drum that dates back to Chinas Neolithic period. Found in Banpo village near Xian, the capital of Shaanxi Province, the drum is estimated to have been created between 5000 and 4000 BCE. The drumhead, possibly made of snake or frog skin, would have been tied to the hooks around the rim of the drum for tension. Among Western instruments at MIM, the 10-string guitarra española in the Guitar Gallery is the oldest. Instruments resembling the modern guitar first appeared in the late 1400s, and among the early guitars still in existence, this one made in Portugal circa 1590 is considered the oldest full-sized example.

Concerts Special Events And Programs
MIM hosts concerts in its Music Theater, special events throughout the year, and classes for all ages. Visit the calendar for more details on upcoming events.
- MIM Music Theater: This intimate space seats 300 and hosts approximately 200 artists, many of whom are performing in Arizona for the first time, every year. Tickets for the concerts can be purchased online or at the box office located in the museums main lobby.
- Signature Events: These family-friendly, weekend-long programs celebrate cultures, music genres, and musical icons with live music and dance, hands-on activities, curator talks, and more. Admission to signature events is free with a paid museum admission. MIM typically holds one signature event per month.
- Programs: MIM offers several programs for kids. Mini Music Makers introduces the youngest, from ages 0 to 5, to music through song, dance, and playing instruments while Musical Adventures for kids ages 6 to 10, explores culture as well. Junior Museum Guides prepares kids in grades 6 through 12 to become museum guides.

Who Was The Architect And What Type Of Materials Were Used
MIM was designed by awardwinning architect Rich Varda, in conjunction with the Minneapolis and Phoenix firm of RSP Architects. MIMs distinctive architecture evokes the topography of the Southwest. Its materials and patterns pay homage to the desert landscape, to the rhythms of musical composition, and to the familiar details common to musical instruments from around the world. Indian sandstone is the primary element on the buildings dynamic façade. MIMs lobby is light filled and fluid in form. Guests are linked to all the galleries through a spacious main corridor that conjures up the lyrical forms of music and graceful musical instruments. Likewise, patterns on the floors, walls, and ceilings suggest the geological striations of the Arizona landscape, the rhythms of musical composition, and designs and shapes common to musical instruments.
Getting Started At The Musical Instrument Museum
Once you arrive at MIM and check in at the front desk, theyll provide each person with their own headset. These headsets are used in various galleries throughout the museum, and act as your guide for each section. As you stand in front of specific displays, the headphones automatically play whatever sound goes with that display. They even had kids sizes, and our children loved walking around with their very own headset!

What Dining Options Are Located Near Mim
MIM has two dining options for you to enjoy everything from specialty roasted coffee and tea drinks to delicious pastries and lunch dishes showcasing local produce and flavors from around the world. Beats Coffee Bar is open during museum hours, and lunch at MIMs award-winning Café Allegro is offered daily starting at 11 a.m.
Youll also find a variety of restaurants at nearby Desert Ridge Marketplace, and downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale are within a short drive from the museum.
What To See In The Mim
The museum includes hands-on exhibitions that make visiting the MIM even more enjoyable. At the beginning of the visit you will be given headphones that come alive when you get close to the various instruments and play extracts of that precise instrument on display.
The museum is made up of four floors that features over 7.000 instruments organized by different styles. There is a floor dedicated to a collection of mechanical electrical and electronic instruments, traditional musical instruments, Western classical music, and finally keys and keyboards.

Musical Instrument Museum Awards Teachers With Free Admission
The Musical Instrument Museum invites Arizona K-12 educators to explore more than 5,000 instruments and artifacts from every country in the world for free during July. Current Arizona teachers, school and district administrators, teachers aides, and homeschool educators will be granted complimentary admission with a school- or district-issued ID, or an affidavit of intent.
With substantial cuts to arts education programs in schools across Arizona, MIM offers educators a way to introduce students to the arts in a fun and engaging manner. MIMs exhibits provide an array of learning opportunities for topics ranging from music and geography to social studies and science.
MIM currently offers four school group tours and will be adding a new one in August. School tours vary by age-group, but each tour can be customized to fit a certain grade level or educational objective. The first tour of the 20122013 academic year will be Aug. 1.
Educator Appreciation Month gives teachers a firsthand look at what MIM offers to students taking part in a field trip, said Education manager Carly Shaw. Our wide range of educational programs is designed to inspire learners of all ages and we consistently receive feedback that our activities do just that!

There are other museums of musical instruments across the globe, but MIM is unique in that it brings together in one place an expansive collection of instruments from every country. Other musical instrument museums primarily focus on Western instruments, with much less attention paid to those from other areas of the world. MIMs experience also brings these instruments to life through technology that enables visitors to see and hear these instruments in their original cultural settings, like in no other museum in the world.

The Musical Instrument Museum invites Arizona K12 educators to explore nearly 6,000 instruments and artifacts from every country in the world for free during the entire month of July.
Current Arizona teachers, school and district administrators, registered student teachers, teachers aides and homeschool educators will be granted complimentary admission with a school- or district-issued ID, fingerprint clearance card or an affidavit of intent.
Educators can take an in-depth look at MIMs educational offerings for the 20132014 school year during the museums Teachers Preview Days on Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 21. Programming will include information about field trips , pre- and post-visit curricula and Artist Residency Programs. The preview days will also feature a performance by the Kawambe-Omowale African Drum and Dance Theatre, one of the 20132014 Artists in Residence light refreshments the opportunity to tour MIMs galleries and a preview of MIMs two new school-tour options.
Educators who sign up for MIMs electronic newsletter The Beat in July will have their names entered into a drawing to win a prize from the Museum Store. Additionally, educators will receive a 10 percent discount on non-sale books and gifts at the Museum Store throughout the month.

Are you a teacher? The MIM is celebrating you and your work with free admission for the whole month. During the entire month of July, prekindergarten through 12th-grade educations, school and district administrators, principals, registered student teachers, and homeschool educators will receive free general admission upon presentation of a school ID, fingerprint clearance card, or affidavit of intent.
We believe that educators are both leaders in their communities and vital partners of the museum. In that spirit, MIM is pleased to announce our Educator Appreciation Month in July, they wrote on their website.
And thats not it! Educators will receive a 10% discount on most items at the Museum Store and a 10% discount in Beats Coffee Bar and Café Allegro.
Congo Masks And Music: Masterpieces From Central Africa
As you start your self-guided tour of the museum, youll come to one of their special exhibits. These exhibits are temporary additions to the museum, and feature masterpieces from all over the world! Currently they are hosting Congo Masks and Music: Masterpieces from Central Africa. This exhibit will run through September 2021, and features lively traditions from all over Central Africa. Walk through the exhibit to learn about the masks, instruments, and costumes that make up some of the traditions of Central Africa.

Musical Instrument Museum Provides Free Arts Education Online And In
The Musical Instrument Museum streams live tours and concerts about music, science and culture to millions of people each year for a fee.
But a $7,500 Season for Sharing grant supports free access to the virtual programs for more than 5,000 children who attend under-resourced schools in Maricopa County. Additionally, field trips for students from low-income schools are provided with free admission into the museum.
The Musical Instrument Museum opened in 2010 and features permanent galleries organized by geography, containing items culled from collectors, instrument makers and musicians. There also are the hands-on Experience Gallery and the Mechanical Music Gallery, which features instruments that play themselves.

Immersive galleries play music from more than 200 countries. Galleries are dedicated to celebrity musicians, mechanical musical instruments and hands-on exhibits.
The newest exhibit, “Treasures: Legendary Musical Instruments,”opened in the fall and continues through September 2023. It features a curated collection of more than 80 notable instruments from around the world.
Some instruments in the collection go back through 6,000 years of history, including an ancient Chinese ceramic drum.
