We love to work at the Fenimore Art Museum and The Farmer’s Museum in Cooperstown NY. The venue is an amazing blend of classy elegance and country chic in one place. The Fenimore Art Museum’s grounds overlook a grand panorama of Otsego Lake giving a beautiful background to your wedding photos. The Farmer’s museum, with the simple light filled church is a wonderful venue for a ceremony and the grounds of the museum as indicated in the name is perfect for a country or rustic style wedding. The best part is you get all this without giving up modern faciltities, great parking and a village of museums and shopping for your out of town guests.

Back In Time At The Farmers’ Museum In Cooperstown New York

As our family has been traveling around the US, we’ve been lucky to stay at a variety of working farms and the kids have learned to love a variety of farms. We were eager to see all that the Farmers’ Museum had to offer and how much we’d learn about Farming!

We lucked out and there was an exhibit focused on Hops, which was especially interesting to my husband who is a big craft beer fan. Inside there was also a play area where the kids could dress in old fashioned clothing and play with a variety of farming toys and puzzles (which allowed my husband even more time to enjoy all of the Hops exhibit.

We quickly discovered that the Farmers’ Museum is about far more than just farming – it’s a living history museum focused on rural life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Historic Village contains a variety of buildings including a general store, pharmacy, blacksmith shop, church, and barn. We loved browsing the general store and the kids each bought some rock candy. The pharmacy was very different from what my kids are familiar with, it focused on natural and herbal remedies. We loved watching the blacksmith make handmade nails and explaining step-by-step how those nails are made! Because it is a working farm – the nails and other products are available for purchase in the general store.

Tips To Make Your Trip Extra Enjoyable

• Dress Appropriately – The Farmers’ Museum has a working farm and a lot of outside walking on a variety of services, so make sure that you dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and plan on muddy shoes if it’s rained recently! My kids were glad to have their rain boots!
• Plan to stay for a couple days – The is a lot to see/do at the Farmers’ Museum and you could easily spend the whole day here . But Cooperstown is a great town to explore – lots of cute shops!
• Save with a Combo Ticket – Enjoy admission to the Farmers’ Museum, Fenimore Art Museum, and National Baseball Hall of Fame! And, you can visit them on different days – the visits just need to happen within one year!
• Food/Drinks – The Crossroads Café is open Memorial Weekend through Labor Day, and you can also access the Fenimore Café in the Fenimore Art Museum during Fenimore Art Museum hours . There are also picnic tables on the grounds if you want to pack a picnic lunch.

Review Of The Farmers’ Museum In Cooperstown

The Farmers Museum has beckoned to me for years now. I relied on some of their research when I was a museum educator at a small farmhouse in Manhattan, so Ive been curious. But Id assumed, given the name, that it was pretty farming-focused, and I wasnt sure if my kids would enjoy it. I was profoundly wrong on both counts. As we approached, it was clear that the museum has plenty thats entertaining for all ages.

First, the details: admission is $12 for adults, $6 for kids ages 7 to 12, and free for kids under 7 years old. There are picnic tables and indoor space for families to lunch or snack on their own, and theres a Crossroads Café with sandwiches, soups, snacks, and drinks. The museum itself is just across the street from the Fenimore Art Museum if you have the energy for both in one day. We didnt, but Im deeply impressed by you if you do! The best time to visit is May to October. From January to March theyre closed except for special events, and hours are more limited when its chilly. The Farmers Museum is set up as a mid-nineteenth-century village, so visitors are constantly walking in and out of buildings.

We started at the Main Barn, which contains changing exhibitions. Through October, its about New York State foods. My children were interested, but we passed through pretty quickly. Still, it was enough that my older daughter asked if the barn was the whole museum. Nope: we were just getting started.

History Of The Farmers Museum

The land that eventually became the museum was a working farm since the early 1800s, owned by James Fenimore Cooper. Fenimore Farm, ran smoothly for many years and changed owners to Edward Severin Clark. Clark made a showcase complex for his sheep. That showcase along with the barn and other aspects of the farm are still a part of the museum today.

The Farmers Museum is considered on the National Register of Historic Places, and is closely affiliated with the Fenimore Art Museum. The museums are right across from each other and provide rich history and artifacts from facets of Fenimores life, as well as other pieces of art and history.
