After Five Successful Years At The Jewish Museum Russ & Daughters Is Refocusing On Its Core Business

The only kosher outpost of the iconic Russ & Daughters appetizing shop will not reopen, the Jewish Museum in New York City has announced two years after the restaurant closed because of the pandemic.

Restaurants across the city and country shuttered for in-person dining in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic descended on the United States. But many pivoted to other food delivery models to stay in business. Over time, many reopened to in-person dining as well.

That never happened at the Upper East Side location of Russ & Daughters, which opened inside the museum in 2016. Its artsy aesthetic and elevated deli food had drawn a wide array of diners, including, somewhat unusually for kosher restaurants, Jews who do and do not keep kosher.

Yet even as the months ticked on, the restaurant and museum were hesitant to declare their partnership over. In August 2021, Niki Russ Federman, the restaurants fourth-generation co-owner, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that no decision has been made not to reopen.

She said the unpredictable course of the pandemic, as well as the subterranean space in the Jewish Museums basement, made planning difficult.

A followup query in December went unanswered. But as time passed and the city returned to itself, the museum restaurant remained shuttered, offering up an answer of its own.

And now, the museum has finally posted a statement to its website confirming the closure.

The lox lovers at Russ & Daughters have substantially expanded their NYC footprint in recent years, first opening a new sit-down cafe on the Lower East Side and then expanding their baking operation to a refurbished spot in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Now, their indelible mark can be found uptown with the debut of their newest location inside The Jewish Museum on Fifth Avenue at 92nd Street.

The new location combines its downtown brethren into one space, operating as both a 60-seat restaurant and a take-out appetizing counter, both on the museum’s lower level and accessible to those who aren’t also taking in the excellent exhibitions celebrating Jewish artists and innovators . Inside, they’ll be offering the same dishes that made them famous downtown, like their smoked fish platters, bagel sandwiches, babkas and egg creams.

To further connect the cafe to the museum, The Jewish Museum Director Claudia Gould tapped artist Maira Kalman to create a mural to adorn the walls of the restaurant. The piece depicts “120 vignettes and small scenes” of Kalman’s experiences with food, community and Russ & Daughter’s important cultural connection to New York City. Another wall captures a scene from the shop’s historic space on Houston Street.

    What Is Appetizing

Appetizing is a Jewish food tradition that is most typical among American Jews, and it is particularly local to New York and New Yorkers. The word appetizer is derived from the Latin appete, meaning “to desire, covet, or long for. Used as a noun, appetizing is most easily understood as “the foods one eats with bagels. Its primary components are a variety of smoked and cured salmon, homemade salads, and cream cheeses.
