Top Music Attractions In Nashville
Never a huge fan of country music growing up, I wasnt motivated to visit Nashville until I watched “Country Music,” the eight-part, 16-hour 2019 PBS documentary by Ken Burns. I learned there was so much more to the genre than banjos, fiddles and hokey lyrics about driving trucks and drinking beer.
Theres no better place than Nashville to learn about the lives and music created by the legends Burns chronicled in his documentary.
Here are my six favorite music-related sites to see in Nashville. Except for the Grand Ole Opry, all are downtown in close proximity to each other.

History Of The Museum
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is the world’s largest repository of country music artifacts. Early in the 1960s, as the Country Music Association‘s campaign to publicize country music was accelerating, CMA leaders determined that a new organization was needed to operate a country music museum and related activities beyond CMA’s scope as a simply a trade organization. Toward this end, the nonprofit Country Music Foundation was chartered by the state of Tennessee in 1964 to collect, preserve, and publicize information and artifacts relating to the history of country music. Through CMF, industry leaders raised money with the effort of CMA Executive Director Jo Walker-Meador to build the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which opened on April 1, 1967. The original building was a barn-shaped structure located at the head of Music Row, erected on the site of a small Nashville city park. This hall of fame was modeled after the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. At this point, artifacts began to be displayed and a small library was begun in a loft above one of the museum’s galleries.
Early in the 1970s, the basement of the museum building was partially complete, and library expansion began, embracing not only recordings, but also books and periodicals, sheet music and songbooks, photographs, business documents, and other materials. At the outset, CMA staff had run the museum, but by 1972, the museum acquired its own small staff.

National Museum Of African American Music
The newest addition to the Nashville music scene, the National Museum of African American Music recently celebrated its one-year anniversary.
The highly interactive museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the more than 50 music genres created, influenced and inspired by African Americans. I especially enjoyed an exhibit about the legendary Nat King Cole, the first African American performer to host a network television series.
It is as much of a history museum as it is a music museum, says Middleton.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum COO and Co-Founder Linda Chambers, has transitioned to CEO of the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum, stepping into the leadership role held by her late husband, CEO/Co-Founder Joe Chambers, who passed away on September 28, 2022.
As Joe said, The museum wouldnt exist without Linda, she allowed me to be as creative as I could be, and she was the business side. The leadership change took effect November 1, 2022.
Butch Spyridon, CEO, Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp, said, The Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum is a Music City treasure. The announcement follows the unveiling of the 2022 class of Musicians Hall of Fame Inductees last week which includes musicians Don McLean, and The Fabulous Superlatives , Ray Stevens, and Vince Gill, plus engineer George Massenburg, and producer James William Guercio.

Bill Anderson: As Far as I Can See, an exploration of the Country Music Hall of Fame members life and musical legacy, from childhood through his contributions as one of the most decorated recording artists, songwriters, and entertainers in history. Stocked with historic photographs, significant artifacts, instruments, manuscripts, interactive multimedia, and more, the exhibition is scheduled to run through March 19, 2023.

Joe Chambers was an accomplished musician and songwriter, and, as a couple, Linda and Joe opened a chain of guitar stores, Chambers Guitars. The couple co-founded and opened the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum in 2006 on 6th Avenue South. They relocated to what is now known as the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum at Nashvilles Historic Municipal Auditorium in 2013 and also houses the GRAMMY Gallery.
The museum, revered by artists including Keith Richards, Garth Brooks and Neil Young, recently added exhibits featuring Alan Parsons, Marshall Tucker Band and drummer, Stan Lynch.
The mission of the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum is to honor all great musicians regardless of genre or instruments. This is done by exhibiting the actual instrument they used to record some of the most iconic songs in recorded history. Not only does the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum entertain local and international visitors but also educates them about the musicians who actually played on the soundtracks of their lives.

Postwar Development To Present
Rapid occurred during the years immediately after World War II, as new housing was being built outside city limits. This resulted in a demand for many new schools and other support facilities, which the county found difficult to provide. At the same time, suburbanization led to a declining tax base in the city, although many suburban residents used unique city amenities and services that were supported financially only by city taxpayers. After years of discussion, a referendum was held in 1958 on the issue of consolidating city and county government. It failed to gain approval although it was supported by the then-elected leaders of both jurisdictions, County Judge and Mayor .
Following the referendum’s failure, Nashville annexed some 42 square miles of suburban jurisdictions to expand its tax base. This increased uncertainty among residents, and created resentment among many suburban communities. Under the second charter for metropolitan government, which was approved in 1962, two levels of service provision were proposed: the General Services District and the Urban Services District, to provide for a differential in tax levels. Residents of the Urban Services District had a full range of city services. The areas that made up the General Services District, however, had a lower tax rate until full services were provided. This helped reconcile aspects of services and taxation among the differing jurisdictions within the large metro region.

Th And 19th Centuries
In 1689, French-Canadian trader established a trading post on the Cumberland River, near the present-day site of the city. In 1714, a group of French traders under the command of Charles Charleville established a settlement and trading post at the present location of downtown Nashville, which became known as French Lick. These settlers quickly established an extensive fur trading network with the local Native Americans, but by the 1740s the settlement had largely been abandoned.
In 1779, explorers and led a party of to the site of French Lick, and constructed . It was named for , the hero. Nashville quickly grew because of its strategic location as a port on the , a tributary of the and its later status as a major railroad center. By 1800, the city had 345 residents, including 136 enslaved African Americans and 14 free African Americans. In 1806, Nashville was as a city and became the of . In 1843, the city was named as the permanent capital of the state of . Knoxville, Kingston & Murfreesboro were prior locations of the state capital.
The cholera epidemic that struck Nashville in 18491850 took the life of former U.S. President and resulted in high fatalities. There were 311 deaths from cholera in 1849 and an estimated 316 to about 500 in 1850.

For a professional in the country music field, Membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame, is one of the highest honors the genre can bestow. Invitation can be is extended to performers, songwriters, broadcasters, musicians, and executives in recognition of their contributions to the development of country music. The hall of fame honor was created in 1961 by the Country Music Association the first inductees were Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, and Fred Rose.
