Cbus52: Columbus in a Year: Wine and Canvas: Toulouse

Wild Things Are Happening: The Art of Maurice Sendak is the first major retrospective of the talented Sendak since he passed away in 2012. Its the largest exhibition of his work and it will be on view until March 5, 2023. A national tour of the exhibition is planned once it leaves Columbus.

Featuring over 150 sketches, paintings, and storyboards from The Maurice Sendak Foundation, the exhibition features some of Sendaks most famous works, Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There.

In addition to Sendaks works, there are also examples of the art that influenced him as well as some of his art for opera, theatre, film, and television. Wild Things Are Happening is guest curated by Jonathan Weinberg, artist, and Curator of The Maurice Sendak Foundation.

So many of us grew up with Maurice Sendaks illustrated books, says Nannette Maciejunes, CMA executive director and CEO. This exhibition not only gives you the chance to see original drawings for his beloved books, but to discover Sendaks range as an artist and the true depth of his creativity.

Taking a deeper dive into Sendaks work shows a complexity that, as a kid enjoying his creations, youd never be able to see. Sendak believed that children could handle more than adults typically give them credit for, and thats evident in all of his work.

Columbus Art Museum Debuts Major Maurice Sendak Exhibit

The Columbus Museum of Art has opened a comprehensive exhibit on artist and illustrator Maurice Sendak

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Most people today know artist Maurice Sendak as the creator of children’s book classics such as Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen. A new exhibition of his work looks at that reputation and a less well-known side of his immense output: his work as a designer for opera, theater, film, and television.

We wanted people to understand that Maurice was actually a serious artist, said Lynn Caponera, executive director of the Maurice Sendak Foundation in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Though most knew him as an illustrator and picture book artist, they didnt see beyond the fact that he did a lot more than that, she said.

Wild Things are Happening opened this month at the Columbus Museum of Art and runs through March 5, 2023. It’s the first major retrospective of Sendaks work since his 2012 death and the largest and most complete to date.

The exhibit takes its name from a 1990s advertising campaign Sendak did for Bell Atlantic that featured Wild Things characters promoting a fast, dependable Internet service.

To commemorate Sendak’s affinity for Mickey Mouse who first appeared in 1928, the year Sendak was born the exhibit includes an illustration that TV Guide commissioned in 1978 for Mickey Mouse’s 50th birthday featuring Sendak, also 50, waving at a mirror as the cartoon character waves back.

It was the first major exhibition in San Francisco and included eleven galleries of new and archival works.

Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem

Jerusalem, IsraelAugust 1999November 2000

More than one million visitors saw Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem 2000.The Jerusalem project started with lunch at my kitchen table with Izzika and Yaffa Gaon. They had visited Venice when I hung Chandeliers over the canals, and we all thought an installation project would be great for Israel. We discussed locations and the Citadel Tower of David Museum presented itself as an extraordinary location for such a project. When Izzika died shortly after, I flew to Jerusalem for his memorial service, and met Shosh Yaniv the museum director, and she gave me a tour of the Citadel. I was overwhelmed with the Citadel and Jerusalem, which I had visited once before in 1962. Shosh and I were determined to find a way to do this project in Izzika’s memory.Chihuly

Columbus Museum Of Art Displays A Powerhouse Raphael Tapestry Exhibit After Two

Raphael exhibit at Columbus Museum of Art, delayed two years by COVID is worth the trip

COLUMBUS, Ohio Poor Raphael. Hailed as a rival of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci during the Italian Renaissance, he died in Rome in 1520 at age 37 at the height of his artistic power and fame.

Scholars believe Raphael succumbed after suffering from a fever and bloodletting, a misguided medical treatment that probably weakened him fatally.

Then of all things, 500 years later, the COVID-19 pandemic messed up the 500th anniversary of Raphaels death.

Museums on both sides of the Atlantic had planned major exhibitions saluting il Divino, the divine one, as Raphael was known. Some shows went ahead, including the massive Raphael, 1520-1483, an innovative exhibition at the museum of the Quirinale in Rome that retraced the masters career in reverse.

But restrictions on international travel cut attendance, and some exhibitions were delayed. Among them was a major collaboration undertaken by the Columbus Museum of Art and the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany.

Now, following a curtailed run in Dresden in 2020, the show opened earlier this summer in Columbus after the museum painstakingly renegotiated loan agreements with institutions including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Raphael Drawings Cartoons Show Tapestries’ Preliminary Designs

Interspersed with the tapestries are the full-size reproductions of Raphaels cartoons and two small Raphael drawings that preceded the cartoons a variety of works by Baroque and Renaissance artists that reinterpret the scenes of the tapestries or present other Biblical scenes, and portraits of individuals instrumental in producing or acquiring the tapestries. Among these: Anthony Van Dycks 1637 portrait of King Charles I, Peter Paul Rubens 1626 painting The Meeting of Abraham and Melchizedek and, serendipitously, a massive 17th century painting by an unknown artist, The Miraculous Draft of Fishes, from the Carlo Croce Collection in Columbus.

The many dimensions to the art works in the exhibit, as well as informative panels and multi-media enhancements, make for a rich viewing experience. Through cell phones, visitors can access audio narration and video clips that provide more history and context.

Through Vincents Eyes offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative process and how an extraordinary painter like Van Gogh would have been observing and absorbing the cultural milieu around him, said Nannette Maciejunes, CMA executive director and CEO.
