The Stories Of The Bible

Bible Museum in Washington DC

The Stories of the Bible section was my favorite section.

It has interactive tours and exhibits.

The World of Jesus of Nazareth was like walking through a movie set.

It was beautiful to see the types of rooms and items they used in Jesus day.

It makes a great place for photo ops!

My favorite part of the Stores of the Bible was the Hebrew Bible section.

Its hard to explain and they wouldnt allow photography in the tour.

But it walked us through the stories of the Old Testament with amazing works of art projected on the walls and on structures.

The combinations of projectors, screens, props and other audio visual effects made it unlike anything we had ever experienced.

Development Of The Collection

In 2009, John Shipman, a venture capitalist who wanted to collect historical Bibles and open a museum in Dallas, Texas, invited Steve Green on a trip to Turkey to look at a Gospel of John with an ornate silver case.Green et al., This Dangerous Book. In November 2009, they traveled to Turkey to meet with the family who owned this artifact. Due to political reasons, however, the meeting did not happen. Green did have the chance to see some other objects while in Istanbul and came back to the States with a piqued interest in biblical artifacts. Over the next few years, he passionately collected biblical artifacts, first to support his acquaintances in their vision to start a museum of the Bible, and then for sheer excitement and intrigue. He also traveled to Israel and met with many people about Bible-related collections that might be for salethis got Green very excited to put together a collection of Bibles.

His aim was not to buy as a collector, but to acquire these objects to tell their story.Green et al., This Dangerous Book. The Greens already owned a business of educational Christian books, and Steves brother had been very involved in the enterprise from the beginning of his career. It was only natural for the Greens to go into collecting rare biblical artifacts, and they fully embraced this dream.

The Washington Revelations Experience Ride

Movable Typeset

The Washington Revelations Experience really blew us away.

We honestly had no clue what we signed up for. Kayla wanted to keep it a surprise to us.

Its a type of 4D theatre ride with wind and the viewing area moves around a bit. If you get motion sickness we wouldnt recommend you riding this. Kayla felt pretty nauseous after the ride was finished.

It felt as if we were flying around DC. It was very fun! It is an additional cost as well but also worth it.

At the age of 10 I read E. L. Konigsburg beloved novel, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a story in which two young siblings run away from home and hide away for several days at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Ever since, Ive wondered what museum Id choose to live in if I were to embark on such an adventure. Now that Im too old and risk-adverse to try it, Ive finally found my answer: the Museum of the Bible.

The Museum of a the Bible is a new 430,000-square-foot museum located near the National Mall and the nations Capitol in Washington, D.C. that officially opened to the public yesterday. Even if, like the kids in Konigsburgs novel, you could hide out in the museum for days you still wouldnt be able to see everything it has to offer the museums curators estimate itd take nine days to explore every exhibit and artifact. But even if you only have a few hours to spare, here are four reasons why the MOTB is worth your time.

Geneva Bible 1587 Ad 1589 Ad

The Geneva Bible was the result of the persecution under the reign of the daughter of Henry VIII, known as “Bloody Mary”. The Reformation fires were burning hot in England and many great reformers fled England to the free city of Geneva for safety. It had been 20 years since the printing of the “Great Bible” in 1540 A.D. and the reformers such as Calvin, Knox and Beza set themselves to the task because a new translation was desperately needed. The resulting work was to be extremely popular with the Puritans and the common people as well as men like John Bunyan and William Shakespeare. First printed in 1560 A.D.,the Geneva Bible was printed as late as 1644 A.D. and holds the distinction of being the first Bible printed with verses. It also was the first Bible to come to America, landing with the Pilgrims at Cape Henry Virginia in 1607.

The Geneva Bible was also called the Breeches Bible because of the translation in Genesis 3:7 which says, they sewed fig leaves together to make themselves breeches. This particular fragment was printed just prior to the printing of the Authorized Version and shows beautiful roman type. It is 389 years old.

At What Point Did You Realize You Wanted To Put Together This Book

It began when I organized a panel discussion at the Association for Jewish Studies in Washington in 2017 on how Jews, Judaism and the Jewish Bible are represented in the museum. Later, an editor reached out to me to see if Id be interested in doing a collection of essays on supersessionismn , but as the volume evolved and my collaborator, Cavan Concannon, signed on, it became clear what we were really interested in was collecting a variety of voices of biblical scholars and those in related disciplines about the museum.

The Motb Sets A New Standard For Evangelical Cultural Engagement

Book Minute: Illustrated Bibles

There are two types of evangelicals in America: those who embrace the kitschy and cheesy artifacts of Christian cultureWWJD? bracelets, Testamints, prayer of Jabez scented candlesand those who smugly look down on those who enjoy such kitsch.

Ive always been ashamed about being the second typean evangelical who is embarrassed by his own religious culture . But buried beneath my sinful pride is a genuine yearning for Christians to be the preeminent champions of beauty and excellence. Too often in our past weve displayed a disregard for aesthetic quality, forgetting that truth and beauty are closely connected.

The MOTB is a refreshing shift in the right direction. Not only does this new museum hold its own against its nearby neighbors, like the Smithsonian and Hirshhorn, it sets a new standard in museum technology. As The Washington Posts art and architecture critic Philip Kennicott says, Every resource of museum design and careful argumentation has been mustered to sweep up these unrelated ideas in one, big, overwhelming package.

It tells this seductive story well, in many places with factual accuracy, and always with an eye to clarity and entertainment, Kennicott adds. It is an exciting idea, and an enormously powerful tool for making sense of the world. Unless, of course, you dont believe it.

Would You Say Most Bible Scholars At Secular Universities Are Critical Of The Museum Of The Bible

The scholars I know are critical. But by definition, were supposed to be critical. One of the critiques biblical scholars have is that they would prefer it if the museum just stated what its position is that its an evangelical Christian project. But there are some biblical scholars who are consultants for the museum and they want to change it from the inside. If they critiqued the museum publicly, theyd lose access. To my mind, that means they implicitly agree the museum needs changing. They have a different mechanism for working toward that.
