What’s New In Aerospace from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington DC

One of the oldest botanic gardens in the country, this giant national greenhouse on the Mall consists of three parts: a conservatory containing more than 4,000 plants, the National Garden outside, and Bartholdi Park across the street. Built in 1933, the conservatory features almost 30,000 square feet of space and includes an orchid court, a desert garden, a seasonal childrens garden with activities, and an oversize jungle area in the center with a viewing balcony from which to observe the tropical plants and vines.

The National Garden includes a rose garden and an amphitheater made from the marble steps of the Capitols old east portico, a butterfly garden, and a water garden dedicated to the First Ladies of the United States, while Bartholdi Park has a spectacular, recently restored fountain as its centerpiece.

Reimagining The Air And Space Museum

As one of the most-visited museums in the world, the Air and Space Museum has consistently welcomed more than six million visitors annually. With that in mind, the Smithsonian has started a major construction project to enhance the visitor experience and protect the museums collection. All 23 galleries and spaces will be transformed and more than 1,400 new artifacts will be displayed upon completion of the project, which is expected to last seven years. The museum will remain open for the duration of the project, although certain parts of the collection will be transferred to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.

Restoration room is located in this hanger. Eventhough it is a bit far from the center of DC but it worth your one day trip to visit here.

Both are free to enter . Both can get very busy, especially during the summer, but the vast expanse of the Udvar-Hazy Center can accommodate more people without it feeling crowded.

The National Mall Building is easy to findits right on the National Mall, up the eastern end towards the US Capitol Building.

    Wow! That’s a common statement from visitors when they enter the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Located near Washington Dulles International Airport, the Udvar-Hazy Center is a must-see destination in Fairfax County.

    The museum’s massive exhibit spaces make it easy to social distance, while taking in some pretty amazing sites. The Boeing Aviation Hangar has nearly 200 aircraft on display, including an Air France Concorde, the last remaining World War I-era Sopwith Camel that was built by the Sopwith Company, the largest collections of Japanese and German World War II aircraft in the world, helicopters, commercial and private airplanes, and more.

    Make Your Trip Easier With These Tips

    The museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., allowing plenty of time to navigate through asteroids any day of the year, except for 25 December. Weekends can be busy, so arrive early to help beat the crowds who want to see that famous Sopwith Camel too. Also, keep in mind that peak season is March through August and the holiday season.

    Because of the construction project, one of the entrances to the Museum in Washington, DC has been closed. All visitors can use the Jefferson Drive entrance.

    Be prepared to go through security and leave those selfie sticks at home. Other non-permitted items include: guns, knives, pets, tripods and a few others. Although you arent allowed to bring photography equipment, cameras are welcome and photography itself is encouraged! Snap away and make sure to share with the museum on your social media feed. While outside food and drinks arent permitted, visit the on-site cafe at the museum in Washington, DC for a pick-me-up of sandwiches, salads and other grab-and-go items or pop in the full-service McDonalds at the Udvar-Hazy Center .

    What You Need To Know About Visiting The Udvar

This two-year project is still ongoing, and will be completed in phases. The artifacts positioned under the section that is being worked on will be covered for protection.

    Tickets And Other Practicalities

    The National Air and Space Museum is located on the National Mall at Sixth Street and Independence Avenue SW. It is near Metrorail stops on the blue, orange, yellow and green lines, and the closest Metrorail stop is at L’Enfant Plaza. Metrobus stops are located on Independence Avenue SW and along 7th Street SW.

    Admission is free, although there are charges for immersive experiences including the IMAX theater planetarium and flight simulators. The museum often observes extended hours during the spring and summer – check the website for details.

    Note: In late 2018, the museum began a seven-year complete renovation so the west wing of the building is currently closed for the first phase of the renovation. In 2022, the first new galleries will begin to open to the public and the east wing of the building will close for renovation.

    Construction Of Current Building

    The museum’s prominent site on the National Mall once housed the city’s armory, which became Armory Square Hospital during the Civil War it nursed the worst wounded cases who were transported to Washington after battles. The rest of the site was occupied by a cluster of temporary war buildings that existed from World War I until the 1960s.

    The space race in the 1950s and 1960s led to the renaming of the museum to the National Air and Space Museum, and finally congressional passage of appropriations for the construction of the new exhibition hall, which opened July 1, 1976 at the height of the United States Bicentennial festivities under the leadership of Director Michael Collins, who had flown to the Moon on Apollo 11.
