Window Rock Tribal Park and Veterans Memorial

Explore Navajo Interactive The small park near the Navajo Nation Administration Center features the graceful redstone arch for which the capital is named. The Navajo Nation headquarters and other government offices were built in close proximity to this mystical rock formation. More recently, the Navajos have built a Veteran’s Memorial at the base of Window Rock to honor the many Navajos who served in the U.S. military. Many Navajo soldiers are recognized in the annals of history for their role as Code Talkers, whereby they used the native language to create a code that was never broken by the enemy. Historians credit the Navajo Code Talkers for helping to win World War II. The park has many symbolic structures: a circular path outlining the four cardinal directions, 16 angled steel pillars with the names of war veterans, and a healing sanctuary that is used for reflection and solitude that features a fountain made of sandstone. While not the best museum in the world, it is worth visiting if you are in the area.

This museum has high quality exhibits which rotate. Currently a famous Navajo artist is featured. Another time I went to see Two Grey Hills Weavers featured. The permanent exhibits are educational and informative. Lots of free special programs offered. See current Navajo Times for listings. A nice gift shop is adjacent to the museum. The admission is free but be sure to make a donation!

Cool place, I love Navajo Code Talker history. they have a lot of empty space, that could be used for more displays.

The Navajo Nation Museum first wows you with its beautiful design, a modern evocation of a hogan. As with a hogan, you enter on the east. If you are new to Navajo culture, you will be introduced to a variety of arts and crafts, from traditional to contemporary. Frequent special programs take place in the museum and the lovely theater. A gift shop provides a wonderful place to shop for Navajo crafts and souvenirs that you know are high quality and authentic. This is a real find in a remote corner of Arizona.

While visiting the Monument Valley, the 17-mile loop road has reopened at 75% occupancy limit at all tribal park locations per NNDOH.
