The Little Shop In The Middle Of Nowhere Where Wonderful Folks Come From Everywhere

Kersting’s Cycle Center sits between the tiny Indiana towns of North Judson and Winamac–about 110 miles due north of Indianapolis. “We’re in the country, so it’s us and horses Harleys and hogs,” Jim says, adding that some of those horses and hog® have served as payment over the years. “I’ve taken them in trade before, everything anybody wanted to trade,” he says. “I still think it’s a pretty good system. There’s always someone wanting to buy horses and the pigs got put in the freezer.”

In 1960, he married Nella, and they began work on their dealership’s new home. “We built it out of cement blocks, and it was 28 feet wide and 70 feet long,” Jim says. “The first 30 feet on the west end was our living quarters.” Jim and Nella’s two eldest children, Sandy and Randy, were born during the seven years the Kersting’s lived in that building. The youngest, Jason, was born after they moved into a little home in North Judson.

As is often the case with young boys, Jim Kersting was struck with the all-things-mechanical bug at an early age. One of his most memorable experiments involved the combination of a motorcycle frame, and the motor from his mothers washing machine. The results were rather spectacular, despite the fact that his mother was not yet finished with the use of her Maytag. The Simpletag is still on display at Kerstings. Unlike other children whose mechanical inclinations get put aside for other endeavors, Jim allowed his passion to grow into a blooming business.

This mecca of motorcycling is not located in a large metropolitan area, but in a quiet section of Indiana., North Judson is within 100 miles of Chicago, but seems to be in a world of its own. Surrounded by fields of active farms, and with many neighbors of the four legged variety, Kerstings is hardly the location youd expect for a world class museum of motorcycle collectibles.

The World of Motorcycles Museum is a not for profit organization operating under Federal 501C3 status.

Attractions In Pulaski County

Attractions in Pulaski County are plentiful enough to keep you entertained and engaged, whatever your interests. This is the home of Kerstings Cycle Center and the World of Motorcycles Museum, dubbed by Rider magazine one of the best bike museums in the Midwest. Here founder Jim Kersting began displaying his collection of nearly 100 bikes from eight countries and nearly 90 years of manufacturing in 1962. He added more bikes and memorabilia every year until his death in 2021. Read more about Kerstings Cycle Center here: travelindiana.com/experience-speed-in-pulaski-county/.

Kerstings childhood love of making things work led him to create his first bike with an old motorcycle frame and the motor from his mothers washing machine without her permission. He went on to parlay this love of machines into a motorcycle mecca that now spreads over 40 acres and fills a 40,000-square-foot indoor space outside of Winimac.

You dont have to be a rider yourself to enjoy a Friday or Saturday afternoon marveling at the 1926 Harley-Davidson BA, the 1931 Indian four-cylinder, the 1916 H.-D. Model J, or the scores of other vintage bikes. Youll also discover photographs and memorabilia as well as vintage automobiles.

State-of-the art facilities guarantee shooters a safe and exciting experience, and when they want to take a break they can play laser tag or go inside for refreshments, video games and shopping. Walk-ons are welcome, and they are also set up to host your next private event.
