Using art to respond to the unique challenge of Covid 19, the Lauren Rogers Museum created and distributed thousands of grab and go activity kits which were inspired by their collections and exhibitions. Each kit included all the needed instructions and supplies for a fun family experience.

Due to Covid 19 and the cancellation of off-site field trips for schools, the Museum also created Classroom Art Kits. These free custom-designed all-inclusive art kits feature activities that relate directly to the Museums permanent collections and exhibitions and includes step by step instruction, resource guides and individually packed art materials for up to 30 studentseverything teachers need for a creative class project.

The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art opened to the public in 1923 as a memorial to a young man with a promising future in the booming timber town of Laurel, Mississippi. Princeton-educated and recently married, Lauren Eastman Rogers was primed to take his place with the Eastman Gardiner Lumber Company when he died in 1921 at the age of 23 from complications of appendicitis.

In the wake of this tragedy, Laurens family created the Museum in his memory as a testament to his spirit, his ability, and the promise of his future. Their goal was to create a place for the advancement of learning and to never charge an admission fee.

Located for more than 90 years on a broad, tree-lined avenue in the quiet, small town of Laurel, Mississippi, the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art is that place. With no admission charge, friendly volunteers, and facilities of approximately 30,000 square feet, the LRMA is open six days a week. It is dedicated to serving the community with not only its permanent collections but special programs, traveling exhibitions, and other educational opportunities.

Mississippi’s first art museum, the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art is located in Laurel, Mississippi, United States. It was founded in 1923 in memory of Lauren Eastman Rogers. The building’s architect was Rathbone DeBuys of New Orleans, Louisiana.

The museum has an extensive collection of Native American baskets. It also has a selection of American art by Winslow Homer, Albert Bierstadt, and John Singer Sargent. It receives 32,000 visitors a year.

The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art Gala, held the first Saturday evening of December, is arguably the areas most elegant and anticipated event of the year. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ford will chair this years ball, inspired by the French Impressionist movement of the early 20th century.

Set in the galleries of Mississippis first art museum and complete with a fabulous dining experience, dancing, and spirited bidding, this event draws approximately 300 guests each year from New Orleans to Seattle.

Original artwork by prominent regional artists, exciting trips, and unique jewelry highlight the Live Auction, while the Silent Auction features dinners, gifts, artwork, weekend getaways, and antiques.

The Gala Preview Party is presented by the LRMA Guild of Docents and Volunteers on the Thursday evening prior to the Gala. The Preview Party provides an opportunity for Gala patrons and Auction donors to familiarize themselves with the items in the Silent Auction and begin bidding on their favorites.

The Museums primary fundraising event, the black-tie Gala routinely raises more than $80,000 annually for LRMA programs and exhibitions.

The emphasis here is on 19th- and 20th-century painting, and this museum houses one of the most outstanding collections in the South. Seven elegant galleries invite one to linger with masterpieces by James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, and Mary Cassatt, among other notable artists. There is a rich collection of landscape paintings, from dramatic renderings of the American wilderness by Albert Bierstadt to Thomas Morans grandiose sunset scene and the moody impressionism of George Innesss later works.

The museum also contains an excellent exhibit of Georgian silver. Highlights include a 1785 George III teapot by Hester Bateman, one of the few female silversmiths of her time William Plummers celebrated cake baskets and plates by Paul Lamerie, acclaimed in the early 1700s as the finest of Englands craftsmen of silver and gold.

Another of the museums displays provides insight into the subtle relationship between art and archaeology. The Catherine Marshall Gardiner Native American Basket Collection features such superb craftsmanship that one set of miniature baskets is displayed under a magnifying glass.

The Georgian Revival building, with its golden oak hallways and elaborate ironwork, is itself an elegant tribute to the architecture of the Old South.
