West Virginia State Farm Museum To Reopen

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. – The West Virginia State Farm Museum will open for the 2021 season on Thursday, April 1.

The Museum, supported by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, showcases numerous relocated historical buildings, as well as a wide variety of days-gone-by farm implements and antique tractors. Regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Well have a new collection of antique Gravely equipment on display later in the year. We think this will be a great addition considering that Gravely is widely known for its Dunbar production and was founded very near, if not, on the museum grounds, said Executive Director Tim Kidwell. Were excited to welcome the public back to the Farm Museum after closing for the pandemic last year.

The Spring Gas/Steam Show will be held May 1-2 and will include a church service Sunday morning in the log church and a gospel sing at 1:30 p.m.

Other events this year include:

The Tractor Parade and Show – July 24

The Mothman Festival Hayride – Sept. 18

The Country Fall Festival – Oct. 2-3

The Christmas Light Display in December.

Antique tractor pulls will be held June 5, July 3, Sept. 4 and Nov. 6.

The museum is a non-profit organization and is seeking volunteers, especially groups, to help with maintenance projects and event management throughout the year. In addition, the museums dining room and pavilions can be rented for private events.

World’s Largest Horse: West Virginia State Farm Museum

West Virginia State Farm Museum (Point Pleasant)

Point Pleasant, West Virginia

Charlie the caretaker roars out on his ATV to greet us. The West Virginia State Farm Museum normally isn’t open on Mondays, but we’ve called ahead and the management has generously offered to have Charlie show us around.

The museum spreads across 50 acres and has 36 buildings, including a log cabin, an old schoolhouse, a doctor’s office, blacksmith shop, post office, and barbershop. There are displays of threshing machines, cultivators, tractors, carriages, sewing machines, tools, bottle and jars. All of which, frankly, are not that interesting unless you’re into the history of American farming.

General, World’s Largest Stuffed Horse.

Charlie, sensing our disappointment, offers some suggestions.

“There’s a lot of stuff here that you won’t see anywhere else,” he insists. He mentions an old Lutheran church building, supposedly the first one west of the Allegheny Mountains “and the only church with a gun rack in it.” Charlie also tells us of a clothes dryer from the 1700s, “the oldest one in existence.” That sounds promising. “Does it have a sign, saying that?” we ask. Well, Charlie answers, no.

There are, however, items of merit here, and Charlie is happy to lead us to them. For example, tucked away in a small stable by the rest rooms, is the World’s Largest Stuffed Horse.

Charlie, eager to help, is willing to cross the line with us. “You ever touch a bear?” he asks, conspiratorially, pointing to a stuffed black bear in the shadows.

“What?”

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. The West Virginia State Farm Museum Christmas Light Show in Point Pleasant will come to life Friday, Dec. 4, and will run every night from 6 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 13.

Due to pandemic, the event will be drive-thru only. The display is free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged, according to a news release from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.

The light show is a safe and fun holiday activity for the whole family, the museums executive director, Tim Kidwell, said in the release. A lot of time and volunteer effort goes into this display. Fundraisers like these are critical to the operation of the museum, which preserves buildings and artifacts from our states early history. We hope everyone will make this an ongoing Christmas tradition.

Large Area And Lots Of Exhibits

There were lots of exhibits but no one in any of the buildings to tell us about the things. We prowled on our own, through the old tractors, black smith shop, store. Everything is well done and well cared for. It was interesting, but would have liked it to have been a working farm which we thought it was.

I was in the area about 30 miles away and took a detour to check this place out and am glad that I did, nice museum and worth checking out if in the area. Allow a couple of hours if you can.

While visiting the Battle Field there in was honored to have met Lyn “Fawn” Cornwell-Robinson and was amazed to find out that she was the grand-daughter of Chief Cornstock! The museum was phenomenal and full of great artifacts and literature! A must see !!

I’m not sure why this isn’t #1 on things to do in Point Pleasant. We could have spent a 1/3 a day here and still not have seen everything. This was our favorite part of our day-trip to Point Pleasant. What a treat. We will be back with friends.
