A Museum Of Native Stone A Mountain Of Native Talent

The Blowing Rock Art & History Museum expresses a mission of promoting the visual arts and the history and heritage of the mountains through educational programs, exhibitions, and significant permanent collections.

Given any season in the mountains, that mission can come to life in art club meetings, yoga classes, puppetry workshops, art classes, concerts and curator tours of exhibitions that have ranged from etchings and lithographs to archival photography to great swaths of mountain history.

While not continually on exhibit, the museums permanent collection includes a number of works by its patron artist Elliott Daingerfield, donated by Cora and LaMont Hudson, a gift that led to the organization of the museum in 1999. It opened to the public in a new building in October 2011. BRAHMs permanent collection also includes a selection of glass art made by artists at the Penland School of Crafts, donated by Sonia and Issac Luski, and examples of North Carolina pottery, donated by Elizabeth and Leo Kohn.

The museum offers many educational opportunities for both adults and youth, as well as many special events throughout the year.

Brahm Book Club: What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia By Elizabeth Catte Phd

About the Book: In 2016, headlines declared Appalachia ground zero for America’s “forgotten tribe” of white working class voters. Journalists flocked to the region to extract sympathetic profiles of families devastated by poverty, abandoned by establishment politics, and eager to consume cheap campaign promises. What You Are Getting Wrong About Appalachia is a frank assessment of America’s recent fascination with the people and problems of the region. The book analyzes trends in contemporary writing on Appalachia, presents a brief history of Appalachia with an eye toward unpacking Appalachian stereotypes, and provides examples of writing, art, and policy created by Appalachians as opposed to for Appalachians. The book offers a must-needed insider’s perspective on the region.

Brahm Book Club: Junaluska Speaks Edited By Sue Keefe Phd And The Junaluska Heritage Association

About the Book: Junaluska is one of the oldest African American communities in western North Carolina and one of the few surviving today. After Emancipation, many former slaves in Watauga County became sharecroppers, were allowed to clear land and to keep a portion, or bought property outright, all in the segregated neighborhood on the hill overlooking the town of Boone, North Carolina. Land and home ownership have been crucial to the survival of this community, whose residents are closely interconnected as extended families and neighbors. Missionized by white Krimmer Mennonites in the early twentieth century, their church is one of a handful of African American Mennonite Brethren churches in the United States, and it provides one of the few avenues for leadership in the local black community. Susan Keefe has worked closely with members of the community in editing this book, which is based on three decades of participatory research. These life history narratives adapted from interviews with residents offer a people’s history of the black experience in the southern mountains. Their stories provide a unique glimpse into the lives of African Americans in Appalachia during the 20th century–and a community determined to survive through the next.
