Hen Burks: Shelter In Place

Stephen Burks with Woven TV , 2022

Put together on the back of the global upheaval we all experienced in 2020, Shelter in Place confronts many of the disparities in society, industry, creative work and beyond. By grouping objects in themes such as craft as collaboration, modernist orthodoxies, weaving as metaphor and environmental inclusion, Burks industrial design practice is framed in a larger cultural context for the first time. It was during the early phase of the global pandemic that the High Museums curator of decorative art and design, Monica Obniski began conversations with Burks and his team to explore bringing an exhibition to life. Through this exhibition, and its related publication, Im thrilled to shed light on an American designer who has developed a unique point of view during nearly 20 years in the field, she says. It is really important for our audiences to understand that architecture and design cross cultural and national boundaries. This is especially true for Burks practice that examines how objects are made by bringing together diverse perspectives and talents.

History Of Midtown Atlanta

Museum Tower

Parts of the area now known as Midtown were purchased by Richard Peters in 1848. He used the pine forest there for fuel for his flour mill in downtown Atlanta. Peters eventually subdivided sections of land lots that would later be sold and used for residential development. After the American Civil War, 10th Street became a shantytown. This led to many vagrants and burglars in the area, but once Atlanta began growing outward from the city center, mansions started sprouting up along Peachtree Street and around the 10th Street area. Eventually, the undesirable vagrants and thieves left and the area began to prosper.

It wasnt until Colony Square, a large commercial development was built between 1969 and 1973 that the people and landscape of Midtown started shifting. During the 80s public transportation began to spread with the opening of a MARTA station. It was also during this time that the older properties were demolished and new commercial and residential developments began to be constructed. In the 2000s, developers shifted their attention mainly towards building many new high-rise offices, condos and mix-use developments, which included numerous retail stores. This brought in an influx of affluent residents eager to call Midtown home.
