How Much Do Tickets To The New York Sea Air And Space Museum Cost

Visiting The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum – New York

There are many options for ticket prices at the New York Sea, Air and Space Museum and the cost varies according to age, the number of people in the group, the day of the week, whether or not you are a museum supporter and what add-ons are added to the basic ticket. As a base price for a Friday, for example, an adult under 65 pays $33 and a child pays $24.

It is good to know that there are many extra activities that can be added to make the visit even more complete. In this case, ticket prices are increased.

For example, for the “Apollo Beyond Virtual Reality” activity you have to pay an extra 11 dollars per person, for the “Simulators” and the “Concorde Experience” the supplement is also 11 dollars per person, while the “3D Cinema” experience costs 10 dollars per person.

West Side Elevated Highway

Various proposals circulated in the 1920s to build an expressway on the west side. Among the proposals:

  • Rail/Highway Double Decker The proposed building a highway/rail double decked highway from 72nd Street to Canal Street, which would be constructed privately at no cost to the city. It would eliminate 106 grade crossings over 84 blocks. It ran into opposition because of fears that it would create a rail monopoly.
  • Hencken’s Ten-story Train/Car/Office/People Mover Engineer John Hencken proposed an exotic ten-story complex with a rail line underground, a road at street level, and a people mover built above that, topped by ten stories of apartments and offices. The highway would run on top of the ten-story buildings. A similar alternative was offered by Benjamin Battin.

The Uss Intrepid Experience

Inside the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

Looking almost battle-ready in New York harbor, the USS Intrepid calls out to grown-up kids who love getting close to big machines. As well as touring the crew quarters and the mechanical innards of the aircraft carrier, including the elevator that delivers fighter planes from the bowels of the ship to its floating runway, you can wander around the vast flight deck, dotted with an eclectic collection of flying machines.

For most people, the pick of the planes is Concorde this particular aircraft flew for British Airways before retiring in 2003. Also worthy of note are the deeply weird Grumman E1B Tracer, and the Lockheed A-12 surveillance plane, almost certainly the sexiest aircraft ever created. Other highlights for aircraft spotters include fighters, bombers and helicopters, including a distinctive Vietnam War-era Huey.

The space part arrives in the form of the Enterprise, NASAs first space shuttle orbiter from the 1970s. Its housed in the hangar-sized Space Shuttle Pavilion and displays inside recreate the life of an astronaut in space. The museum is also home to the guided-missile submarine Growler, whose cramped spaces offer a taste of the claustrophobic life of a submarine crew.

From Aircraft Carrier To Museum

Tickets Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The initial value of the once proud and victorious Intrepid was literally seen as the sum of its partsor the amount of money it could earn if reduced to sold scrap metal. But a new lease on life hovered on the horizon in the mid-1970s when the Odysseys in Flight Group was established to acquire and transform an aircraft carrier into a museum. Perhaps viewing the opportunity as a long-delayed one when denied military acceptance himself during World War II because of a leg injury, Zachary Fisher, one of its members, saw it as a purpose to be fulfilled.

His interest was summed up in five short words. I will save the Intrepid, he said.

With it came the secondary project of revitalizing New Yorks West Side, which in the early-1980s was plighted and seedy, with the attraction his moored museum would provide.

Departing Philadelphia for the first time in eight years, it was repositioned to New Jerseys Hoboken Bethlehem Shipyard for its almost $22 million restoration and transformation into a public project and then, with 1,300 Navy personnel, former Intrepid crew members, donors, and supporters on board, sailed into its new Pier 86 home on June 13, 1982.

Today, it offers the opportunity to inspect numerous historic aircraft on its flight, gallery, hangar, and third decks.

What Is The The Intrepid Sea Air And Space Museum

Restored aircraft unveiled on Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The Old Hudson Dockyards was once a thriving and bustling industrial area, however, when the heavy industries that fueled the trade moved elsewhere the Docklands, like so many others, became derelict and disused. Many efforts have been made to regenerate the area, one such effort is the Intrepid Sea, Air, And Space Museum.

The Intrepid is an Essex Class Air Craft Carrier, commissioned during World War II she served extensively in the Pacific and later also in the Vietnam Wars. Retiring after 31 years she was saved from the Scrap heap and brought to the Hudson Docks to serve as a museum to all things Air and Sea. In Addition to this is the Space Shuttle Pavillion that serves as a Space Museum, housing one of 4 remaining Space Shuttles, Enterprise.

The Museum is a pretty unique experience, A living War Museum right in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world, You would never imagine walking the decks of an aircraft Carrier right in the heart of Manhattan. It is not the usual New York Attraction and is all the better for it.
