John E Kushner Restoration Pavilion

Look through the pavilions glass to witness the restoration of WWII artifacts in progress.

Currently under restoration is a Higgins Industries PT boat, PT-305 that was built in New Orleans and saw service in the Mediterranean theater.

When restoration is complete the patrol torpedo boat PT-305 will be launched into her home waters of Lake Pontchartrain.

Following two to three months of testing, PT 305 will be moved to a custom-built boathouse and opened to the public.

This complex is where you can view Beyond All Boundaries narrated by Tom Hanks.

Daily showtimes start at 10:00 am and run hourly until 4:00 pm. On Friday and Saturday, the last showing time is 5:00 pm.

Advance tickets are highly recommended and the price can be added on to your General Admission ticket purchase.

On the second floor, you will find the Merchant Marine Gallery, a 940-square-foot gallery honoring civilian merchant mariners.

Beyond All Boundaries & Final Mission

Visitors will often begin their visit to the museum by watching this 45-minute movie experience, narrated by Tom Hanks and replete with the sort immersion the museum prides itself on: falling snow, seats that shudder under explosions, etc. In the same interactive vein is Final Mission. This exhibit recreates the final mission of the USS Tang, a submarine that was sunk by one of its own torpedoes following attacks on Japanese shipping lanes. Final Mission takes place in the US Freedom Pavilion, which is itself filled with resorted aircraft, tanks, and uniforms from the war.

Lunchbox Lecture: The Raid At Pearl Harbor

While US strategy in 1941 was largely focused on the war in Europe, the bold carrier raid seized the initiative against increasing US pressure over Japans ongoing war in China. Captain Rick Jacobs will discuss the events of that terrible, heroic dayfrom the opening of Japan by Commodore Mathew Perry in the 1850s through the devastation at Pearl Harbor on December 7.

The Arsenal Of Democracy

This section of the museum is devoted to the war outside of the battlefields. Gathering Storm tells the saga of the geopolitical tensions that preceded the war, and explains how fascism was the ideological engine of the Axis cause. A House Divided goes into the deep domestic divisions that split Americans between isolationists and interventionists. Other exhibitions explore the massive mobilization of resources that was required to fight a war on two fronts on opposite sides of the world. United but Unequal is a particularly powerful gallery that explores the racial tensions on the American homefront even while fighting ethnic nationalists, the American military was segregated, and Japanese American civilians were rounded up into internment camps.

The Battle Of Coral Sea: A Retrospective

Often overshadowed by the Battle of Midway, the hard-fought carrier naval battle in May 1942 in the waters of the Coral Sea north of Australia marked the end of the phase of Japanese triumphs in the Pacific War and proved to be of strategic significance.

At the beginning of May, 1942, the Japanese Empire was wrapping up the triumphant initial campaigns which had initiated its war in the Pacific. Practically the entire western Pacific basin was now under Japanese control.

The British had been crushed in Hong Kong, Malaya, and Borneo, ending with the humiliating surrender of Singapore in February. The vital port of Rabaul, at the tip of New Britain, had been lost in February as well, giving the Japanese a crucial base near the Solomon Islands and New Guinea. During March, the Dutch had been overwhelmed in Sumatra and Java, with their vital oilfields falling into Japanese hands.

All in all, the picture for the Allies was one of outright calamity. The Japanese held the initiative, and India and Australia both now seemed directly threatened.

Both sides, though, were shortly to become grimly aware of just how poor their scouting actually was.

The Campaigns Of Courage

The museum is divided into several pavilions, themselves subdivided into different sections, but the main draw for most visitors are the two Campaigns of Courage exhibits, which focus on the European and Pacific theaters of the war – respectively, the Road to Berlin and the Road to Tokyo. The museums focus is aimed at American involvement in the war, and while some exhibition space discusses other Allied nations, the contributions of these countries is cast as strictly supporting the main American narrative.

Highlights from the Road to Berlin include a recreation of the Tunisian desert, which includes sand, gravel, an actual 1943 jeep and a 105mm Howitzer. In another room youll enter the wintry Ardennes forest, the backdrop for an exhibit on the Battle of the Bulge, which precedes the bombed out cityscapes of Cologne and Hamburg during the final push into Nazi Germany.

The Road to Tokyo includes a shark-faced P-40 Warhawk aircraft, a recreation of the bridge of the USS Enterprise, where visitors can learn about the naval combat and island hopping of the Pacific campaign, and a recreated jungle of towering palms meant to evoke the battlefields of Guadalcanal.

NEW ORLEANS On Monday, May 30, the National WWII Museum held a service for the fallen service members for Memorial Day.

The Commemoration Ceremony featured keynote speaker Keri Hart.

Veterans who visited the museum and had an opportunity to collect a scarf as a part of our Knit Your Bit initiative.

Over 10,000 knitters and crocheters participating throughout all 50 states.

Getting To The Museum

The museum is located at 945 Magazine Street, nine blocks from Canal St. and the French Quarter

One of the easiest ways to get here is by using the streetcar. The closest stops are served by line 12 on St Charles Street at Lee Circle.

Alternatively, there are also bus stops very close to the National WW2 Museum on Magazine Street. These stops are serviced by lines 10, 11, and 100.

Howard P Hart Veteran Cia Operative And Survivor Of Wwii Japanese Incarceration Camp Remembered

Howard and Jean Hart at the opening of Road to Tokyo.

A storied CIA operative, Howard P. Hart died recently at age 76. His connection to The National WWII Museum includes a substantial donation of wartime arms currently on display in multiple galleries on our campus, as well as two separate oral history interviews for our Digital Collections. The interviews, conducted by historian Tom Gibbs, covered Harts experiences as a child during the war while his family was held in a Japanese civilian incarceration camp in the Philippines. Now Museum Project Manager, Gibbs recalled meeting Hart for the first time in this post for the Museum blog:

I knew Mr. Hart had a long and decorated CIA career, but the real reason I was there was to capture the story of the Los Banos civilian POW camp, and the incredible story of its liberation in 1945. The liberation coincidentally occurred on the same day the US flag was raised on Mount Suribachi, relegating it to back-page news. Over the course of three and half hours, Mr. Hart proceeded to tell me one of the most engaging and unbelievably human stories I ever captured on tape. Learning of the horrors ofand the actions required to survive ina Japanese prison camp was humbling. It was his story of the camps liberation, however, that struck a chord with me, and its something I will never forget.

Pearl Harbor 80th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony

Early on December 7, 1941, citizens and servicemembers alike in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, faced terror as Japanese planes rained fire on the island in a stunning surprise attack. The assault quickly plunged the United States into a world-changing war. Each year, The National WWII Museum commemorates those who lost their lives on that fateful December day.

Scitech Tuesday: The National Wwii Museums 2017 Robotics Challenge

On Saturday May 13th, 40 teams from Louisiana and Alabama gathered to compete and share their project designs in The Monuments Menthe theme for this years robotics challenge.

The robot competition involved students programming their Lego Mindstorms robots to complete 11 tasks. These tasks represented the efforts of the Monuments Men and others in Europe dedicated to saving the cultural heritage of Europe. For example, robots rescued paintings from boxcars, moved the Mona Lisa and a Nike statue from the Louvre, and cleared and posted sentries on damaged monuments.

Teams also designed bridges to carry their robots. This represented the effort to rebuild the bridges of Florence. As the German forces retreated they destroyed the bridges to slow the advancing Allies.

Awards are given annually for the best competitors in the robot competition, and for robot design, and project. In addition, judges pick a Grand Champion. The Grand Champion may or may not win at any of the individual events, but embodies the spirit of the challenge. This years Grand Champion team won, in addition to the usual trophy, copies of The Monuments Men, signed by author Robert Edsel. We thank Mr. Edsel for this generous contribution.

Wwii Summer Teacher Institute Team Pacific: Day One Dispatch

Studying the war in the Pacific with The National WWII Museum.

Members of the inaugural class of the Museums WWII Summer Teacher InstituteTeam Pacificare in Hawaii this week to complete their year of participation in the program. These 30 middle school and high school teachers from around the country came to the Museum in summer 2016 to study World War II in the Pacific with historian and author Richard B. Frank. Each was provided a Museum-created curriculum guide in exchange for a commitment to share its content and the lessons theyd learned with teachers in their hometown. So far, those lessons have been shared with more than 1,000 teachers. The Institutes second classTeam Europewill assemble in New Orleans in a few days to study World War II in Europe with Donald L. Miller, PhD, then reconvene next summer for a week of study in Normandy, France.

Team Pacific is sending daily dispatches about their experiences in Hawaii. Heres a Day One report from Angel Ledbetter, a high school teacher from North Carolina and member of the Summer Teacher Institute inaugural class:

As a history teacher, my goal is to help my students understand the reality of the past. Starting the day at Iolani Palace and Aliiolani Hale, standing where Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned after her overthrow, and learning about the effects of martial law on the islands during World War II, provided me with insights that will help me do just that.
