Us Attack Aviation: From The Red Baron To Topgun
Our keynote speaker, Brigadier General R.G. Head will be on hand to talk about his newest book entitled, “US Attack Aviation: From the Red Baron to TOPGUN,” as he compares the differences between Air Force and Naval Aviators, the challenges of attack aviation, and the aircraft built for these duties – including a close-up look at the development and politics behind the creation of some of America’s next generation attack fighters. General Head’s newest book will be available for purchase and the General will be happy to sign copies. General Head has presented with us before, most recently when he spoke of World War One ace Oswald Boelke and his contributions to combat aviation.
The Original Top Guns: Chinos Planes Of Fame Air Museum A Must
According to Docent Scott, I was looking at the only original World War II Japanese Zeros: the Mitsubishi A6M5.
There are about six or so, still left and able to fly, but this one is one hundred percent original: all Mitsubishi parts, Docent Scott stated.
That was rather impressive, but so was Docent Scott and his knowledge of all the planes located at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino, California.
I already knew a lot about planes, though. For instance, they have wings, usually a functioning engine, and someone to pilot it. And hopefully, someone is serving adult beverages to the passengers.
The Mitsubishi Aircraft Company produced these long-range fighter planes for the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1939 until 1945. The plane, known as the Zero named after the last digit of the Imperial year 2600 , were to be utilized during World War II atop the navys aircraft carriers.
Nearly 11,000 were manufactured , and only this original one is located at the Planes of Fame.
That research exhausted me.
But this article is not about a single plane, but about the love of the historians keeping these vintage aircraft in marvelous shape for all the public to view.
And speaking of historians, a friend of mine, William Mocharnuk, contacted me a couple of months ago and suggested I visit the Planes of Fame Museum.
When Mocharnuk speaks, we listen.
He was so correct with the air museum in Chino.
You know, he stated. Charles Lindberg flew this Zero.
My turn, yelled Wilbur.
Monthly Flights And Annual Airshows
The museum holds a monthly mini-airshow around a certain theme, such as: “World War I Aviation”, “Experimental Aircraft”, “Korean War Aviation”, “Airplanes In The Movies” and “Naval Aviation”. Each mini-airshow starts with one or more talks or seminars given by people involved with the featured aircraft , followed by a flight demonstration of two or three aircraft related to that day’s theme.
The museum flies all of its airworthy aircraft, as well as many other warbirds visiting from other museums or brought by private owners, during its annual airshow. This event is the largest gathering of warbirds in the western US. Many aircraft are rare or one of a kind.

Where Is Planes Of Fame
It is located in Chino, California. The museum is open 9-5 everyday except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Check their website for driving directions.

A Museum Within A Museum
Ted Mount of the Museum will talk about a subject near and dear to his heart – the widespread use of aircraft models here at the Planes of Fame Air Museum, and the man behind their use, Museum founder Ed Maloney. Ted will conclude by announcing the winners of this year’s “Ed Maloney Scale Model Contest.”

Flying Demo: Grumman F8f Bearcat
Following “Hangar Talk,” we’ll move outside for the Flying Demo of the Museum’s F8F “Bearcat.” Scott Cassells of the Museum will give a brief presentation on the aircraft beginning at 12:15pm which will be followed by the engine start of the 2,000+ horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine. The aircraft will then taxi away and fly over the Museum for approximately 20 minutes. Upon its return, guests will be able to ask questions of the Bearcat’s pilot, Rob Patterson. The Museum’s Bearcat is a beautiful restoration and is featured in the upcoming motion picture “Devotion.”
Also on hand will be several food trucks as well as a special visit from several classic cars including a number of Austin Healey sport cars, plus a few Shelby Cobras, Ferraris, and other cool cars. Guests will be able to see these restored machines up close.

Current Museum hours are Wednesday-Sunday 10 am – 4 pm. We are closed Monday & Tuesday.

Thisweek for aviation enthusiasts the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino,California is our destination. Foundedby Edward T. Maloney in l957, the museum opened its doors with less than adozen planes. It was the first aviationmuseum west of the Rocky Mountains. Now it is home to over 150 displayaircraft, numerous historic artifacts and exciting educational exhibits thatspan the history of manned flight. Itsmission is to preserve aviation history, inspire interest in aviation, educatethe public, and honor aviation pioneers and veterans. The museum has one of the largest collections of Japanese aircraft in theworld, including the only authentic flying Japanese Mitsubishi A6M5 zerofighter, complete with its original Sokai radial engine . Also, on display is a B-17Flying Fortress, P-40 Warhawk, German Messerschmitt ME-109, and a Russian MIG15. A special exhibit hanger isdedicated to the heroic contributions of the famed WWII 475th Fighter Group.
Therewas a beautifully refurbished Vought F4U Corsair, a WWII navy carrier-basedaircraft fighter. Bobs favorite.
As you walk through the hangers for an up-close view of the planes, there arecaptions explaining the planes history, as well as relating the history of thepilot exploits. There is plenty of free parking available.

The 475th Fighter Group Historical Foundation museum is located at the Planes of Fame Air Museum at the Chino Airport in Chino, California. The stories and memorabilia of this highly decorated group, which flew the P-38 in combat, are permanently housed in a display hangar constructed entirely by the members of the 475th. The 475th Fighter Group hangar was donated to Planes of Fame Air Museum in October, 2009, and is the home of the Museums Lockheed P-38 Lightning. Told through graphics, videos, and artifacts from the men of the Fighter Group, their inspirational and accomplished stories are collected in the 475th Fighter Group hangar at the Museum. This hangar is also home to 23 Skidoo, the Museums Lockheed P-38J Lightning, one of only a handful of flying P-38 aircraft.

A Century Of Aircraft Carriers: 1922
The Museum’s Michael Quinney will explore the fascinating evolution of the aircraft carrier from its early days up to the super carriers of today. Michael will relate some of his own experiences of carrier duty as he shows us the importance of these massive ships to protecting American interests on a global scale.
Planes Of Fame Air Museum
- The Museums Chino location is home to nearly 100 aircraft, many of them restored to flying condition. Our collection spans the earliest days of aviation, including the First World War, the 1920s and 1930s, World War II, and Korea and Vietnam.
- The Museum is open Wednesdays thru Sundays and on holiday Mondays. We are closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Hours of operation are 10:00am until 4:00pm. Museum Guides are always available to tell the stories related to the aircraft and their place in history.
- On Saturdays and Sundays, the Museums Boeing B-17Flying Fortress will be open to visitors to safely enter and learn about the men and women who designed, built, and flew these massive bombers during World War II.

A Story Of Devotion Brought To The Big Screen
Planes of Fame is proud to have played a small role in the upcoming major motion picture release “Devotion,” due to hit theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Brian Finnegan of the Museum will take a look at this upcoming potential blockbuster, from the true story to the best-selling book and its development into this exciting film. The Museum features three of its aircraft in the movie, including the Grumman F8F “Bearcat” that will fly later in the day.
Come See And Serve As A Judge In The 5th Annual Ed Maloney Scale Model Contest
We’ve got a fantastic number of registrants for this year’s contest. Open to all Museum Members and Volunteers, the contest features scale model submissions in five different categories. Guests to Hangar Talk will serve as judges for this event – receiving a number of stickers to place on the ballots located next to each scale model entry. Be sure to come early to judge the entries. This event is always lots of fun, and it’s great to see the handiwork of our modelers up close. Special Note – there’s still time to enter the contest.
