What Is The Southern Jewish Experience

Transforming Moments with Diane von Furstenberg and Eva Fogelman

The Southern Jewish experience is 19th century immigrant peddlers traveling unpaved roads, carrying hard-boiled eggs with them as they struggle to keep kosher in the land of pork. Its small-town merchants keeping their stores open on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath, because thats the day everyone comes to town to shop. The Southern Jewish experience is driving your child from Natchez to Baton Rouge every Sunday for religious school because there is no religious school in Natchez. Its taking Jewish athletes from across the country competing in the Birmingham Maccabi Games to visit the Civil Rights Museum, cheering for the local high school football team, even though Friday Night Lights has a very different meaning, and debating whether to have a bluegrass band or a klezmer band at your wedding. Its Vandy, UNC, Texas, and Ole Miss students attending High Holiday services at Hillel, because there are no services held in their hometowns

Although representing less than 1% of southern states population, and only 2.1% of Americas Jewish population, Southern Jews have made a substantial mark on the communities where they lived and the nation as a whole. Southern cities and towns have had Jewish mayors, sheriffs, council members and civic leaders, in highly disproportionate numbers. And this occurred in the nations Bible Belt, a region steeped in deep Christian faith and a loyal grip on its distinctive ways.

About The Museum Of Jewish Heritage

The Museum of Jewish Heritage was founded around a lofty goal: to encapsulate Jewish life and culture across the 20th and 21st centuries. A stroll through the exhibit reveals photographs, personal objects of daily life, and audio-video recordings including testimonials from Holocaust survivors.

Items rotate in and out of this core exhibit, while films, discussion panels, and other rotating exhibits paint an even wider picture of Jewish life before, during, and after the Holocaust.

The Southern Jewish Experience shines a light on the experiences of strangers in a strange landwho must adapt, accommodate, conform to their surroundings, and at the same time embrace, sustain, and celebrate their unique history, culture, and religious practices. But it is also a great testament to the soul of the Southerner, who accepted and encouraged their Jewish neighbors as members of the community: leaders, partners, and friends.

Confederate Flag Found Outside Jewish Museum In Nyc

A local lawmaker announced Sunday she is yanking $5,000 in previously planned funding for a Manhattan museum after it allegedly barred Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis from speaking there in June.

Councilwoman Inna Vernikov a Ukrainian-born American Jew revealed in an open letter to museum donors that she will no longer give the money to the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The dough is part of the $700,000 in city funds she is allotted to dole out to Big Apple organizations in the 2023 fiscal year.

I was happy to contribute some of my discretionary funding to The Museum of Jewish Heritage for the great work they do, Vernikov wrote in a letter dated Sunday. I am now pulling that funding and I am asking you to do the same.

This move should send a strong message to the leadership of the museum: DO NOT politicize the Holocaust! added Vernikov, one of five GOP city lawmakers. Just teach it.

The move came after the leaders of the philanthropic Tikvah Fund Elliott Abrams, the deputy national security adviser under President George W. Bush, and executive director Eric Cohen told The Post that museum brass advised them to either disinvite DeSantis from the organizations annual Jewish Leadership Conference at the Battery Park City venue or relocate the event.

Cohen previously told The Post that organization leaders were shocked by the ultimatum and opted to move the event to Pier 60.

The Museum of Jewish Heritage had no immediate comment on the letter.

So was the outgoing prime minister, Naftali Bennett, when on June 20, the two announced that their coalition government, which spans the entire Israeli political spectrum from left-wing secular to Orthodox Jewish and Islamic was no longer tenable.
