Since 2002, the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum has hosted thousands of kids from around the world as they creatively explore hands-on exhibits and take part in interactive workshops and classes about science, history, art, and living. Throughout the year, the museum also brings out its own 8-foot inflatable, walk-through lung exhibit called the MEGA Lung that allows students to learn more about the lung, its functions, and health problems related to asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer, pneumonia, and pulmonary embolism.

The Austin’s Children’s Museum is the place to take the kids while visiting the state’s capitalperfect for a day of learning while having funand recently it’s been renamed The Thinkery. With exhibits like “Currents,” which features watery science kids can see, feel, and hear the “Innovators’ Workshop” where kids can make stop-motion animations, use microscopes, and even work in a functional chemistry lab and the “Spark Shop,” which lets kids discover the concepts of aerodynamics and flight, this museum is worth a full day of exploration.

Rated the second-best children’s museum in the country, the Children’s Museum of Houston has more exhibits, displays, and educational resources than you and the kids can possibly get to in one day. Their newest exhibit is called the Special Elite Crime Resolution and Espionage Team , which allows kids to become detectives to snoop out clues, crack codes, and outsmart villains in an interactive spy museum.

Don’t miss an opportunity to tour Johnson Space Center or get “the feel of space” while visiting Houston. The Kids Space Place at the Johnson Space Center is designed to give youngsters a chance to experience what the astronauts do, and with more than 400 things to explore, students can get an up-close look at real science, math, and technology like the astronauts use.

Admission is $14 per person and children 23 months and under are free. There is a parking garage close by, as well as street parking. The museum doesnt include a café, but there are many restaurants nearby and you can leave and re-enter with your general admission ticket.

Limited accessible metered street parking is available near Thinkery and at the McBee Street District Garage. Thinkery is fully wheelchair accessible and elevator access is available on both floors. A limited number of wheelchairs and sound-reducing earmuffs may be borrowed at the Admissions desk on a first-come, first-served basis. Service Animals are always welcome. During the museum’s Sensory Friendly Hours, Thinkery extends a special invitation to learners with Autism Spectrum Disorders or other special needs to explore Thinkery with their families. Thinkery: For The Big Kids

Thinkery21 is held about six times a year for those of legal drinking age. Of Thinkery21, Dellinger said, Adults get to play like kids again, if only for an evening.

Dellinger continued, The Thinkerys mission is to be a vibrant part of the community, and that doesnt stop at parents and families. We want Thinkery to be relevant to all of Austin, including young adults without kids.

A Valentines-themed Thinkery21 focused on the science of sex, exploring the science of pheromones and attraction. Another fun Thinkery 21 event had a superpowers theme, with local comic clubs and superhero trivia accenting the science of superpower physics. There was even an adult trampoline contest and wrestling match, during a sports and games Thinkery21 event.

Parking At The Austin Children’s Museum

OK – technically, you might get lucky and find some metered street parking in the area, but realistically, a parking garage is the way to go.

And when it comes to parking garages at or near the Austin Children’s Museum, you’ve got a couple of good choices. There are two AMLI parking garages on 2nd Street, one directly across the street from the musuem and another one just two additional blocks west of the first garage between Guadalupe ST and San Antonio ST.

The good news is that ACM visitors pay reduced parking in the AMLI parking garages .

Additionally, on weekends, before 5:00 pm, parking at the nearby City Hall parking garage is free. All other hours are paid. That garage is accessed from Lavaca ST between 2nd ST and Cesar Chavez ST .

Thinkery is where Austins children and their families come to enjoy play-based, inquiry-rich, hands-on learning experiences. Thinkery offers 40,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor activities designed to let children and families learn through play.

Through a variety of hands-on, interactive STEAM exhibits and programs, Thinkery encourages physical, emotional and cognitive development for young learners and fosters joyful curiosity for all ages. Our target ages are newborns through eleven years old, but our interactive experiences are designed to engage learners of all ages!

General Admission tickets

General admission tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. In the event of an emergency closing by the Museum, the ticket purchaser will have the option of an exchange or refund.

Programs

Baby Bloomers:

Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. In the event of an emergency closing by the Museum, the ticket purchaser will have the option of an exchange or refund.

Thinkery Camps:

Camp fees include a $75 non-refundable fee. Refunds are given for cancellations made before May 18, 2022. There are no refunds offered for registrations cancelled after May 18, 2022.

If you are registered for camp and need to change weeks or sessions, there will be a $50 administrative fee once the change is approved. If the camp you are registered for is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be refunded your full tuition payment.

If you are interested in booking additional camp weeks, please call 469-6201 or register online! The camp you sign up for is uniquely yourssessions are not transferable to other campers.

Birthday Parties:

Requests to cancel or reschedule must be made at least two weeks in advance and will incur a $50 administrative fee. Refunds will be offered in response to requests made up to two weeks before the party date.

Refunds are not available for cancellations requested less than two weeks from the reserved event date.
