Sunday night free concerts at the National Gallery of Art started during WWII and have continued on a first-come-first-served basis to the general public.
Many musicians who have performed at the National Gallery of Art have gone on to worldwide fame. More than 3000 such free concerts have taken place here at The Gallery since this program began.
The season of concerts begins every Fall.

National Museum of the American Indian
Youre invited to a special, after hours gathering at the SmithsonianNational Museum of the American Indian .
Our guest of honor is iSchool assistant professor Miranda Belarde-Lewis, 07, 11, 13, who curated the NMAI exhibit Raven and the Box of Daylight. Miranda will be in DC to attend the American Library Association Annual Conference .
Were extending this invitation to other Huskies and special guests attending ALA, as well as UW alumni and friends from the DC area. Please join us to hear Mirandas insights into the development of the exhibit and learn more about her favorite pieces.
The exhibit features the works of acclaimed glass artist Preston Singletary and tells the story of Raven, creator of the world and giver of the stars, moon and sun. Youll take an immersive journey through striking glass pieces and storytelling paired with original music, Pacific Northwest soundscapes and projected imagery.
Our reception will also include drinks and appetizers. We hope youll join us for this evening of education, art and Husky community.

Is It Any Good
Fans of the first Night at the Museum should enjoy this fun, fast-paced sequel — which has just as many impressive effects as the first and a slightly more upbeat story. Larry is no longer a sad-sack divorced dad but a successful businessman who just needs a little course correction to get back to doing what he really loves. And even though the basic premise — museum exhibits come to life at night with the help of a magic Egyptian tablet — is the same as in the first movie, moving the action to the Smithsonian means that everything takes place on an even grander scale. Here, it’s not just dioramas and dinosaur skeletons that perk up when the sun goes down — sculptures roam the hallways, paintings move , and airplanes soar.
Like the plot, Stiller’s performance is pretty much identical to the first movie — he’s wry, dry, and expert at tossing off quips. Adams is a welcome addition as the perky, slang-talking Earhart Saturday Night Live‘s Bill Hader is manically charming as a blustery General Custer and Azaria turns Kahmunrah into a somewhat more peevish version of The Blue Raja, the dandified underdog he played in Mystery Men. Other fun cameos abound, but, frankly, kids probably won’t notice or care — they’ll be too busy watching the living exhibits fight and frolic. Battle of the Smithsonian may not be destined for a museum itself, but it’s plenty of fun for adventure-loving tweens.
National Building Museum: Summer Block Party
It might lack the name recognition of D.C.’s more famous museums, but the National Building Museum is one of the city’s treasures, devoted to “the history and impact of the built environment.” The museum itself is a spectacle, housed in a beautiful 1887 structure that used to be the Pension Building. Inside the building, visitors are treated to the impressive Great Hall, featuring towering 75-foot-tall Corinthian columns and a 1,200-foot terra cotta frieze. The museum features exhibits like House & Home, which explores the importance of famous homes in America, and Designing for Disaster, which looks at architectural innovations in natural hazard-prone areas. Starting July 4, visitors can also explore a massive, 60-foot-square labyrinth, dubbed the “BIG Maze.” Tickets, including admission to the maze and exhibits, are $16 for adults, $13 for children, students and seniors.
During the summer, visitors can take advantage of the National Building Museum’s Summer Block Party, which boasts a plethora of after-hours activities. Enjoy live concerts and award-winning BBQ from Hill Country at the museum’s Backyard Barbeque pop-up every Thursday through Saturday throughout the summer, and explore the museum’s exhibits and maze during extended hours on July 31, August 7, 14, 21 and 28. Admission to the barbeque area is free daytime rates apply to the museum’s extended hours.

Explore The Museums Open Late
Our capital regions museums offer much to do for its guests after regular hours. More and more DC museums showcase thematic events, musical performances, tours, and parties after 5 pm.
Smithsonian: Many of the more popular Smithsonian Museums stay open late on select days in the summer.
While everything else closes at 530 pm, you may find the Air and Space, Natural History, or American History open until 7:30 pm.
The National Portrait Gallery is one of the few museums that says open late every night until 7pm.

Jazz In The Garden National Gallery Of Art Sculpture Garden
Friends at Jazz in the Garden at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden – Free Outdoor Summer Concert in Washington, DC
Summer Friday nights are easy for locals with the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Gardens Jazz in the Garden series. The free jazz concert series runs from 5-8:30 p.m. all summer. If you can get there early, stake out your spot in the grass, lay out some snacks and bring all your friends to enjoy pitchers of sangria, local beers and other refreshments.

On Sunday evenings, typically from fall through spring, the National Gallery of Art features concerts that are open to the public, free of charge. Many musicians who appeared at the Gallery in the past have gone on to worldwide fame, including pianists Claudio Arrau, Eugene Istomin, Earl Wild and the Julliard String Quartets. On specified days throughout the fall and spring seasons, guests at the National Gallery of Arts East Building Gallery can enjoy works of art, live music, dance performances and pop-up talks from educators from 6-9 p.m. Admission is free but registration is required and opens one month prior to each event. This sleepover invites guests to solve a Smithsonian mystery. The Diva Miss Rose has stolen six objects that need to be found. You’ll roam through the museum galleries looking for clues, take part in games, craft projects and experiments. After solving the “crime”, roll out your sleeping bag in the galleries.
This event is for kids 8-12 only though each guest must also be accompanied by a chaperone.

How many of us can say we’ve slept under a North American right whale? Probably not too many of us. But if you choose the National Museum of Natural History, that’s exactly where you’ll be laying your sleeping bag.

American Museum Of Natural History
This museum sleepover doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Every time AMNH releases new dates, they sell out quickly, even with prices that exceed $375. There are separate sleepovers for kids and adults. Sleepovers for kids include tours, interactive events in the galleries and an IMAX movie. Adult sleepovers include a cocktail reception, live band and then free time to explore the empty galleries. Both events allow guests to roll out their sleeping bag in the Hall of Ocean Life and sleep under the giant blue whale.

Full of history, the Kennedy Center dates back to when President Eisenhower signed legislation to make it a National Cultural Center. This was the first time in history the United States government helped finance an institution dedicated to the arts.
Now, the Kennedy Center is one of the busiest performing arts centers in the country, hosting more than 2,000 performances each and every year! The Kennedy Center is home to the National Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Washington National Opera. National Gallery Of Art: Concert Series
Opened in 1937 thanks to a joint resolution of the United States Congress, the National Gallery of Art features one of the nation’s best collections of Western art, from the Middle Ages up through present day. Free to the public, the museum’s massive collection spans two buildingsthe West Building, built in 1941, and the more modern East Building, built in 1978 . Don’t miss the only Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas, Ginevra de’ Benci, a portrait of a 16-year-old girl from a wealthy Renaissance family, or the recently acquired Vincent van Gogh masterpiece Still Life of Oranges and Lemons with Blue Gloves.
On Sunday evenings in June, the National Gallery of Art transforms into a performance space for esteemed classical performers through its National Gallery of Art Concert Series, now in its 72nd season. This month, visitors will be treated to performances by Philippe Entremont and the National Gallery of Art Chamber Players. The performances are free to the public and held immediately after the museum closes on Sundays in the West Building’s West Garden Court.

The Phillips Collection: Phillips After 5
Situated near Dupont Circle, away from the hustle and bustle of the National Mall, the Phillips Collection, an intimate museum founded by Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips in 1921. The collection is considered to be America’s first museum of modern art, and features works from artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mark Rothko, Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe. Be sure to check out Renoirs Luncheon of the Boating Party, the best known and most popular work in the permanent collection. Tickets to the museum are $12 for adults students and seniors can get in for $10.
For a completely unique experience, visit the museum after hours on the first Thursday of each month. From 5 to 8:30 p.m, the space comes alive with music, food and cocktails. Phillips After 5 features a different theme each month: the next event, on July 3, will celebrate America’s birthday, while the August 7 program will focus on art and American cuisine and include a “moveable feast of food trucks.” Ticket prices are the same as daytime admission, but the programs are very popular, so reservations are recommended.

The Intrepid is a floating museum on an old aircraft carrier docked in the Hudson River on Manhattan’s coast. Operation Slumber for families and organized youth groups offers educational activities, a tour of the Space Shuttle Pavilion, a flashlight tour of the deck, a ride in the flight simulator, snacks, breakfast and a goodie bag.

The Hepworth Wakefield West Yorkshire
The Hepworth Wakefield is a contemporary art museum in West Yorkshire, England. The Hepworth Sleepover is for children aged 5 to 12 accompanied by an adult chaperone. Compared to other sleepover events, this one is very reasonably priced at only Child £30 / Adult £15.
The museum team will lead an evening of activities, sculpture sessions, music-making, storytelling and competitions with prizes. Guests should bring a packed supper, pajamas and a toothbrush. The next morning, guests rise early for a hot breakfast and a tour of the exhibitions before the gallery opens to the public.
