The New Museums exhibition Faith Ringgold: American People brings together over six decades of her work, bearing witness to the complexity of the American experience. Through June 5th, 2022.

TheNational Museum of the American Indian , a branch of the Smithsonian dedicated to Native American cultures throughout the Americas, stands near the southern tip of Manhattan. On display now is Dakota Modern: The Art of Oscar Howe, which highlights the work of Oscar Howe , one of the 20th centurys most innovative Native American painters. The museum is housed in the landmark Beaux Arts U.S. Custom House, completed in 1907.
Lamp Of The Covenant: Dave Lane

The Contemporary Jewish Museum commissioned artwork by Sacramento-based artist Dave Lane to be placed in its soaring lobby space. The massive sculpture, entitled Lamp of the Covenant, is a 90-foot-long, six ton work suspended high over the heads of visitors. Attached to an enormous oval of steel are antique objects: world globes, light bulbs, tools such as nineteenth century apple peelers and blow torches, and various other objects that suggest the unfolding marvels of the cosmos.

GOLEM: A Call to Action is an exhibition in three parts by Los Angelesbased artist Julie Weitz, comprising three video artworksGolem v. Golem, My Golem as a Wildland Firefighter, and Prayer for Burnt Foreststhat draw on Jewish allegory, folklore, and spiritual practice to confront societal and ecological disasters. The legend of the golem originates as far back as the Middle Ages, when Jewish mystics imagined the creation of a clay humanoid as a meditative technique for becoming closer to God. By the nineteenth century, popular Yiddish folktales characterized the golem as a helper, companion, or rescuer of an imperiled Jewish community. In this exhibition, Weitz revitalizes golem mythology to frame a moral imperative for action on the social and ecological issues we face today.

Caf As & Simon Wiesenthal
Obviously, Simon Wiesenthal needs no introduction, but this exhibition focused on a rather unexpected aspect of his experience in the Mauthausen concentration camp.
The bulk of the displays featured his designs for a coffee house that fellow camp inmate, Edmund Staniszewski, hoped to open in Poznan after the war. The exhibition also celebrated a friendship forged in remarkable circumstances and included other biographical items from Wiesenthals life at the end of WWII.

Shalom House is a non-profit mental health agency that provides housing and services to adults from all backgrounds who are living with severe mental illness. This year we celebrate our 50th Anniversary of providing Home, Health & Hope with a special exhibition in honor of Nancy Davidson, Curator of the Maine Jewish Museum. Nancy was one of the founding members of Shalom House. She, along with Rabbi Sky, represented the Jewish community in a group of ecumenical leaders looking to create the first halfway house in Maine for those leaving psychiatric institutions during the early 1970s.
For over 28 years the Art Program at Shalom has been an important part of the mental health services we provide. This exhibition features works by Heidi Stubbs and Jack Sullivan, two of the many talented artists in our studio.

New Exhibition Opening June At Nycs Museum Of Jewish Heritage
A new core exhibition will be unveiled at the New York City Museum of Jewish Heritage on June 30, called The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do.
The 12,000 square foot exhibition will feature over 700 artifacts from the museums own collection many of which are from survivors of the Holocaust. The exhibition aims to tell the story of the Holocaust from a local lens, showing items from survivors and their families who settled in New York.
The title of our new exhibition speaks to our institutions very reason for being, says Museum President & CEO Jack Kliger. Antisemitism and fascism are again on the rise throughout the world. Right here in New York, we have witnessed not only a surge in antisemitism but an uptick in violence and harassment targeting many marginalized groups. The time to speak out and act is upon us, and it is urgent. We hope The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do will educate and inspire our visitors and honor those who perished in the Holocaust, whose memories are a blessing.
In a particular parallel, many of the items featured are from Ukraine, and the exhibition heavily features the interconnections between Ukrainian Jews and the context of the current violence and conflict currently occuring in the country.
Maintaining the museums goal to display artifacts of Jewish life past, present and future, the exhibition features the many narratives of Jewish existence throughout history and into today.

Three Art Exhibits To See Right Now In New York
On a recent visit to New York, I saw three art exhibitions I highly recommend: Faith Ringgold: American People, on view at the New Museum through June 5, 2022 The Hare with the Amber Eyes at the Jewish Museum, on view through May 15, 2022 and Hilary Pecis: Warmly at the Rachel Uffner Gallery through May 14.

Faith Ringgold: American People is a must-see show. Ringgold is a 91-year-old Black artist known popularly for her childrens books such as Tar Beach .

New York Citys Jewish Museums
As the city with the worlds largest Jewish population, New York City boasts several Jewish museums. Each chronicles different aspects of the Jewish experience. The most prominent museums are the Jewish Museum on the Upper East Side, the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park, the Center For Jewish History in Chelsea and of course the Museum At Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side. I visited all of them.
Jewish Museum
I began my exploration at the Jewish Museum, which is housed in an early French Renaissance style mansion, originally owned by Jewish banker Felix M. Warburg. Alongside its main exhibit, the museum also hosts temporary ones. On the bottom floor, visitor can enjoy a meal at a new outpost of the famed Jewish appetizing store Russ & Daughters with no entrance admission required.
The museum redefines the definition of a Jewish museum. All the current exhibitions feature Jewish artists. Yet, most of their art does not overtly relate to Jewish history or culture. A highlight exhibition showcased the work of Florine Stettheimer born to a wealthy German Jewish family. She painted beautiful, colorful paintings depicting the 1920s Jazz Age. Featured paintings include self-portraits, images of her sisters, theater scenes, shoppers as well as multiple images of nude women and one Christmas scene.

Brooklyn has become a tourist destination to rival Manhattan, complete with its own world-class institution: the Brooklyn Museum. Current exhibition Andy Warhol: Revelationdelves into the artists Byzantine Catholic upbringing in Pittsburgh and his lifelong relationship with his faith. More than 100 objects, including many rare and newly discovered, ponder Renaissance imagery, immigrant traditions and rituals, depictions of Christ, and the Catholic body and queer desire. Yehudit Shadur was a professional artist whose work includes drawings, paintings, printmaking, and Jewish decorative arts. She had gained wide recognition as the foremost exponent in the revival of the centuries-old, nearly forgotten Jewish folk tradition of papercutting. Her vigorous compositions a synthesis of time-honored Jewish ritual themes and symbols, and of contemporary perceptions are rendered in a universally appealing artistic language. Her work is represented in major museums and private collections of Judaica in Israel, North America, and Europe. Together with her husband Joseph Shadur, Yehudit Shadur published two scholarly books that are important additions to the literature of Jewish art after three decades of researching, studying, and documenting the folk-art of Jewish papercutting.

A Sense Of Place: Landscapes Near & Far

For Toby Gordon, painting is all about connectionto a chosen landscape, to the painting process, to herself, and ultimately to the viewer. Though observation plays a fundamental role in her work, she is less concerned with accurate representation than with the feel of being in a particular place at a particular timethe light, the air, the warmth, the cold. Whether painting in the field or her studio, her process involves a wordless interplay between the felt landscape and the materials. One mark leads to the next, and the action is set into motion. She paints, scrapes, and layers until the painting finally reveals itself, and the end result is always a surprise.
Toby Gordon lives and paints in Kittery Point, Maine. She studied painting and drawing at the University of New Hampshire and has taken workshops with artists Stuart Shils, Chris Liberti, Tom Glover, and Wendy Turner, among many others. Her work has been widely exhibited, including at the George Marshall Store Gallery, the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery, the Portland Art Gallery, the Portsmouth Historical Society, and Drift Gallery.

Museum Exhibits Nyc: Eastern Art
Chelseas Rubin Museum of Art has a mission of presenting and preserving Himalayan art. You can get an overview in current exhibition Gateway to Himalayan Art, whichintroduces visitors to the main forms, concepts, meanings, and traditions of Himalayan art in the Rubin collection. The newest addition here is an interactive space,The Mandala Lab, which is oriented around five immersive experiences, drawing on film, scent, sound, and a sculpture that invites collective breathing.

What The Jewish Museum Is All About
As mentioned in the quote above, The Jewish Museum was established in 1904, with their collection being housed at the library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Mayer Sulzberger donated the original collection of ceremonial art to the organization, at which time the idea to form the museum came about, and they set about in earnest to expand their cache of various works of art.
