The Friday Harbor Whale Museum has a wonderful whale adoption program. For $35 a person can adopt an orca and help support these endangered whales. The proceeds from the adoption support orca education and research.
You get to choose your whale from a long list of available adoptees. Youll receive a large photo of your whale along with adoption papers, and youll also receive a monthly newsletter about the pod. Its an incredible program. Or a person can do a family adoption or a classroom adoption.
After adopting a whale in 2018, I gifted the whale to my four-year-old grandson so that he might develop an interest in these animals and eventually grow to be a steward of nature in some manner. He now has several story books starring orcas.

Three orca pods, J, K & Lthe critically endangered Southern Residentswere federally listed in 2005, but the population continues to struggle. How can you help?
Orca Action Month is every June – a time to celebrate the presence of the Southern Resident orcas in the Salish Sea and take concrete action together for their survival and recovery. For the little ones, fun and learning combine at The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, the first museum on the West Coast dedicated to the stewardship of whales.
There are a lot of actions we can take in our day-to-day lives, from the grocery list and household chores to contacting elected officials. We’ve made the list below by gathering tips from several local conservation organizations dedicated to orca recovery.

Whales Of Guerrero Name And Adopt A Whale

How To Help The Orcas
Be an Orca Steward! No matter where in the world you live, your actions make a difference.
The Southern Resident Community of Killer Whales is listed federally as an endangered species. In 2001, COSEWIC listed Southern Residents as endangered, known in Canada as a Species At Risk. In May 2001, an Endangered Species petition was submitted to the U. S. National Marine Fisheries Service to get the Southern Resident Community listed in the United States. In the summer of 2002, NMFS rejected this proposal, instead listing them as depleted under the . In early 2005, NMFS proposed a threatened designation. In November, 2005, NMFS listed the Southern Resident Community as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. This went into effect in February, 2006.
In 2001 Canada listed the Southern Resident Community as “endangered.” Pollution, dwindling salmon stocks, and high vessel traffic around the whales were cited as reasons for the listing. The fact that the population of J, K and L pods has not exhibited sustained growth in the last 25 years also concerns researchers.
Worldwide, there is no available count of how many wild orcas exist. They are found in every ocean of the world, with the greatest concentrations in the colder waters of the Antarctic, Pacific Northwest, and around Iceland and Norway.

Since 1992, the Wild Killer Whale Adoption Program has supported conservation-oriented research on wild killer whales by Ocean Wises Marine Mammal Research Program. While research is directed mostly on wild killer whales, it also includes other marine mammals that killer whales interact with in their marine environment. Research discoveries are shared through scientific publications, media, social media and public lectures, and through the provision of expert advice to governments, industry, and non-government organizations. Over the past 25 years, the Adoption Program has supported many ground-breaking research projects.

Meet Oreo, or J-22 as she is known to her scientist friends:
Oreo is 34 years old, and mother of sons Cookie age 17, and DoubleStuf She also took over care of her young niece calf at age 12 when her sister, Rhapsody died. The daughter of Tahoma, Oreo stepped up to share leadership of J-Pod with sister HyShqa and cousin Angeline when Granny and Double Stuff died in 2016. J-Pod has had very few sightings in inland waters 2019, possibly due to the low numbers of returning salmon.
The southern resident orcas are not only an iconic symbol of the natural beauty of where we live and play, but they are also a bellwether for the overall health of our Salish Sea. Sort of a very large canary in the coal mine. Their endangered status should be of great concern to all of us who live on, play on, or enjoy the Pacific Northwest.
Your adoption of Oreo allows you to get to know her and her family, while at the time providing funding to the Whale Museums conservation efforts. ADOPT A SOUTHERN RESIDENT ORCA
In partnership with the Center for Whale Research on San Juan Island, Washington, the Whale Museum in Friday Harbour operates an Adopt an Orca Program. You can adopt any member of the Southern Resident population for as little as US$35 per year.
ADOPT A KILLER WHALE
The Vancouver Aquarium, in partnership with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, manages the Killer Whale Adoption Program. Funds go directly towards biological studies such as genetic analysis, toxic contamination loads and dietary analysis, and support conservation efforts to protect the whales natural environment and monitor boat traffic to prevent harassment.
BECOME WHALE WISE
Follow viewing guidelines and local laws in the presence of marine wildlife. When we get too close, approach too fast, or make too much noise, we may be disrupting these activities and causing the animals unnecessary stress. In some cases, we may be threatening their lives. Set an example for others, and help protect our spectacular marine resources.

Our biggest effort is our Exhibit Hall which is open to the public nearly year-round. Through two floors of exhibits, visitors learn more about the Southern Resident Community of orcas, other marine mammals and the Salish Sea ecosystem. We hope that by learning about this richly diverse yet fragile ecosystem, visitors will be inspired to become better stewards.

Whale Museum In Friday Harbor
Spotting an Orca is the quintessential San Juan Islands experience, and the best way to guarantee a sighting is a visit to The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor. This museum is also a must-stop for anyone whos been lucky enough to spot an orca in the wild because once you see one, youll want to figure out how to repeat the experience.
Launched in 1979 to share research on the southern resident orcas, it was the first museum in the country dedicated to a species of wild animal. And in the more than 40 years it has been open within sight of the very waters where this extended family group of whales lives for the majority of their lives, The Whale Museum has helped people from all over the world learn about – and advocate for these endangered orcas.

The Whale Museum on San Juan Island and the Seattle Aquarium invite the public to cast votes to select names for two orca calves, K-33, the offspring of Sekiu , and K-34, the calf of Skagit .
Three resident orca pods or families, J, K and L, live off the San Juan Islands. Each has an alphanumeric identification as well as a name. Calves receive their names after one year.
The Orca Adoption Program, now in its 19th year, educates the public about whales and helps support the museum’s research and education efforts.
Visitors to The Whale Museum and the Seattle Aquarium can select their favorite names from the list on the ballot. To vote, look for the dark purple ballot boxes stationed in the museum and the aquarium.
The Whale Museum is located at 62 First St. N, Friday Harbor the Seattle Aquarium is at Pier 59 on the Seattle waterfront.
To find out which names were selected, check The Whale Museum Web site in late August at www.whalemuseum.org. The individual who nominated the winning names will win a free two-year adoption of the orca calves.
