Good Vibrations Antique Vibrator Museum Collection

NEW YORK CITY VLOG: museum of sex, food for days, shopping
The vibes in our collection date from the late 1800s up through the 1970s.

We display our treasures alongside our company collection online and in our San Francisco Polk Street Store. The vibes in our collection date from the late 1800s up through the 1970s. The electric vibrator had its inception in 1869 with the invention of a steam-powered massager, patented by an American doctor. This device was designed as a medical tool for treating “female disorders.” Within 20 years a British doctor followed up with a more portable battery-operated model by 1900, dozens of styles of electric vibrators, just like those in our exhibit, were available to the discriminating medical professional.

Health, Vigor and Beauty The vibrator was later marketed as a home appliance in women’s magazines and mail order catalogs. Ads proffering “health, vigor and beauty” promoted the vibrator as a health aid. By the 1920s, doctors had abandoned hands-on physical treatments for hysteria in favor of psychotherapeutic techniques. But vibrators continued to have an active commercial life in which they were marketed as cure-alls for ills ranging from headaches and asthma to “fading beauty” and even tuberculosis!

The first gallery visitors will encounter is a collection of objects that tell the history of sex and its relevancy through various cultures, revealing narratives and other surprising facts that people wouldnt normally know. For example, chastity belts were never actually used in medieval times but now serve as an option for BDSM play.

Dominating the center of the room is a replica of a contraption used by King Edward VII to have sex in different ways with multiple people all the while putting in minimal effort himself. Other objects featured range from gynecological tools to sex toys.

About The Museum Of Sex

For over a decade, The Museum of Sex has showcased fascinating exhibitions exploring the art, science, and the study of sexuality. From working in partnership with over 100 major cultural institutions, artists, designers, and academics, the Museum’s work spans the globe with over 25 exhibitions that range from a commentary on the sexual history of NYC and the history of hardcore imagery to the erotic heritage of China. Exhibits aim to put sex in context with our modern understanding of humanity, while also revealing the sometimes scintillating history of past generations.

Reclaiming & Making: Art Desire Violence

The Museum of Sex Celebrates a Retail Partnership with FUN ...

The third floor features an exhibition dedicated to addressing sexual violence. As sex and violence share a complex history, the museum aims to spark dialogue and promote a safer, more liberated sexual culture. It asks visitors to bear witness both to the reality and history of sexual trauma, and to the resiliency, agency, and healing power that survivors of such trauma manifest. To this end, many of the information cards have italicized questions addressed to museum-goers to provoke introspective thought.

The works on display are from fourteen international artists, all of whom have experienced sexual violence. They range from photos of protests to abstract portraits to video interviews. One of the most powerful works from this exhibition is the series of silhouetted portraits by Aida Silvestri. As a survivor of female gential mutilation herself, Silvestri interviewed other survivors and then created potraits that depict the types of FGM they experienced. Accompanying each portrait is what Silvestri calls poems of the womens stories.

How Long Should I Budget To Visit The Museum Of Sex

The amount of time you should allot is dependent on how much you want to read. The first side of the museum provides a lot in terms of visuals, but theyre all accompanied by small plaque cards with information. We highly recommend taking the time to go through and read everything so you leave having learned something new and perhaps gained a different perspective on sex. If you do that and take part in everything at Super Funland, the whole experience should take around two hours.

Super Funland: Journey Into The Erotic Carnival

A hallway of carnival dioramas leads to a theater room where all are asked to watch a seven-minute film about the sexual history of the carnival. The film traces the bacchanalian origins of the carnival from ancient civilizations to the 20th century.

After the visioning, visitors head down to the third floor, Lucky Land. This is where you can play a number of games, such as the Love & Lust Deity Derby which is similar to a balloon blast game where you shoot water and something behind the target moves, racing against other participants. There are claw games, a RuPaul-led fortune telling machine, and a 4D-ride into the tunnel of love. Lucky Land is also home to a breast-themed bouncy castle.

The second floor, the Pink Palace, is aptly named as almost everything is in shades of pink, red, or purple. The attractions here are a slide that goes from the second to first floors, a biometric makeout challenge , a whack-a-mole type game, and a mechanical bull ride.

The last floor, the Lollipop Lounge, is home to the carnival bar and concession stand. At the moment its closed due to COVID-19 precautions, but on a regular day you can chill out there with a drink or snack in hand. The lounge has a pole star dance stage where you can pose and take fun photos to music.

ABC News investigates the world’s kinkiest museums.

LONDON, March 15, 2010 — “Let’s talk about sex baby, let’s talk about you and me…” So went the hip-hop trio Salt-n-Pepa’s famous words from their hit “Let’s Talk About Sex.”

Sex. It’s a topic that’s often touched upon, joked about and skirted around. Increasingly, however, it is on display. From age-old, electric anti-masturbation machines to modern-day S& M portraits, erotic exhibits have taken center stage in the museum world. ABC News has compiled a list of 12 of the world’s kinkiest museums that are worth the tease.

1. Venustempel Sexmuseum Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Amsterdam‘s Venustempel, or Temple of Venus, is the world’s first and oldest sex museum. The house of eroticism first opened its doors in 1985 and now hosts about 500,000 visitors each year. With three floors of erotic portraits, photographs, paintings and recordings, the Venustempel embodies the highly sexualized nature of this European city. The museum’s 4,000-year-old artifacts showcased in its “Sex Through the Ages” exhibit tests modern-day critics’ accusation that today’s society is too loose.

The Museum of Sex, with curated exhibits at its flagship Fifth Avenue museum in Manhattan, launched its Virtual Museum of Sex

The Museum of Sex, with curated exhibits at its flagship Fifth Avenue museum in Manhattan, launched its Virtual Museum of Sex. Among the four inaugural exhibits showing online, US Patent Office Sex Inventions:

The CAD illustrations in this interactive installation were taken from seventeen patent applications submitted between 1862 and 1984 to the United States Patent Office, the federal agency dedicated to the administration and protection of intellectual property. The devices depicted here represent over a century of American sexual technological innovation, and offer a unique look into the history of American ideas about sex and sexuality. Variously designed for pleasure, protection, analysis, and restraint, these devices not only demonstrate evolving technological capabilities, they reveal changing beliefs about the body, emotional and physical health, and the goals and limits of sexual practice.

Where To Start Your Visit At The Museum Of Sex

The museum is four floors in total, but there are two sides to it. The first side consists of the typical museum experience with galleries, artifacts, and lots of reading. The second side is called Super Funland and is billed as an erotic carnival with interactive elements like games and rides.

Visitors will have to go through the first side before they can venture into the second, but its better that way. Youll learn first and then be able to play armed with that knowledge. The best way to experience each side is to go in the pre-labeled order. Start on the second floor and continue going up and exploring each floor. Once youve reached the top of the first side, cross over to the entrance of Super Funland. After that, make your way down floor by floor.

You Must Be At Least This Tall To Ride Thisumride

For a museum, MoSex features a lot of fun attractions, rather like Madame Tussauds with nudity. When I visited people could pay extra to jump around in a grown-up-sized bouncy castle full of giant puffy breasts. There was also a couples-only virtual reality experience. I was flying solo the day I visited, so I cant speak to how that works.

Theres also a Rube Goldberg-y stationary bike-based contraption. Pedaling it drives a piston to which is attached a large plastic phallus. Visitors are only allowed to ride one end of that gizmo. Not the phallus end.

What do the people who shop there think?

Well we have plenty of folks reactions that are available in both Google and Yelp reviews. First though researching the topic Out New York did a comparison piece awhile back. Heres how it described each store

Babeland:At this friendly sex-toy boutiquerun by women and skewed toward womenbrowsers are encouraged to handle all manner of buzzing, wriggling and bendable playthings, including the famed Rabbit Pearl vibrator. The shop also stocks a huge variety of condoms and hosts frank sex-ed classes on a variety of subjects. Readers rated it 3 of 5 stars

The World Through Rose

Heres my problem with the Museum of Sex. It lives in its own little fantasy world where sex is only ever a positive thing. And, yay, thats great, we can probably use more of that in American culture.

But if this place really wants to preserve and present the history, evolution, and cultural significance of human sexuality, I think it has to tell the darker side of the story too.

The main thing about sex in the news for the past three months has been the pervasive alleged sexual misconduct by all sorts of leaders in business and media. Sex has always been about power and it hasnt always been consensual, and I dont see MoSex acknowledging that fact.

Things you wont learn about at the Museum of Sex:

  • VD
  • Pedophilia
  • Basically anything that makes sex seem anything less than a wonderful thing all the time.

I cant blame the curators for not wanting to be buzzkills or whatever. Doubtless fun sexy stories attract more visitors. But if I went to a Museum of Sugary Soft Drinks and there was nothing there about childhood obesity, Id take note of that. And I dont see why MoSex should get a pass.
