Other museum gift shops pale in comparison to the gift shop at the Corning Museum of Glass. The gift shop is enormous and sells everything from books about glass making, glass ornaments, decor, and so much more. One of my favorite things for sale was the glass flowers, sold from the back of a pickup truck.

Making a glass pumpkin is always in season at the Gather Glass Blowing Studio! First you will choose from a wide variety of color options for your pumpkin. You will then be guided through the various steps of creating your pumpkin which include rolling molten glass in your color, inflating the pumpkin with air, using forms to give your pumpkin shape and definition, and finally helping to create your own unique pumpkin stem.

Stroll through the contemporary exhibits, where the artistry of glass is being reimagined. And take your time to appreciate the history of glassmaking in the glass collection galleries. Here you can see the history of glass, dating back 3,500 years. There is so much glass art to see, including a Chihuly piece in the museums lobby.
No matter how many times you visit the Corning Museum of Glass, there is always something new to see. The pieces in the galleries are constantly rotating, and temporary exhibits offer a completely new experience.

Contemporary Glass Galleries
The Contemporary Glass Gallerieshold over 70 pieces from the museums permanent collections, showcasing glass art from the past 25 years. Contemporary art is one of my favorite parts of the museum. The space is bright and airy, flooded with natural light. The stunning natural light makes you feel like you are far removed from an art gallery. While most museums tend to be darker to protect the pieces from light damage, the natural lighting illuminates the glass, further beautifying these pieces.
And the pieces on display in the Contemporary Glass Galleries are primarily large-scale pieces that are indeed works of art. I was amazed to see how these artists reimagined glass and created stunning contemporary works of art.

But the Corning Museum of Glass has far more than just a tower of cooking pots. The Innovation Center, which houses the sculpture, also includes a display of glass in optical instruments, including telescopes, binoculars, periscopes and microscopes, as well as lasers and optical fibres.
Testing ground
Dominating proceedings, though, is a huge, 5.1 m-diameter vertical glass disc pockmarked with scars and cracks . Cast in 1934 by scientists and engineers at Corning Glass Works, it was the first attempt to make the mirror disc for the Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory in California. The disc cracked during casting, but it was completed so Corning staff could work out how to avoid the same problems when they tried again.
Elsewhere I spot a display case of glass musical instruments, including a flute and a crystallophone a xylophone partly filled with water. I also see a glass harmonica, which was invented in the early 1760s by famed American statesman and scientist Benjamin Franklin. This eerie-sounding instrument has been used in Gaetano Donizettis opera Lucia di Lammermore in a haunting scene where the protagonist, going mad, sings what is effectively a duet with the device. Its also been used by rock musicians, including John Sebastian of the Lovin Spoonful.

How Much Time Do You Need At The Corning Museum Of Glass
To get the whole experience of The Corning Museum of Glass, I would plan on spending four hours at the museum. This timeframe will allow you to check out the exhibits, watch a glass blowing demonstration, do the Make Your Own Glass experience, grab lunch, and browse the shops.
If youre planning on spending a lot of time viewing the exhibits, you could spend quite frankly spend the entire day at the museum if you have the time. There is a great cafe and outdoor areas to break up your day.
However, if you are on a time crunch, the minimum amount of time I would suggest visiting is within a three-hour timeframe. Make sure to check out the blowing demonstration and stroll through the exhibits. However, you most likely wont have time to Make Your Own Glass in this amount of time.

BUFFALO, N.Y. If you’re looking for a road trip to round out the summer, the Corning Museum of Glass is a good option. It’s a couple of hours away from Buffalo, and since it’s in-state, you don’t have to quarantine when you return.
The museum has been back open since early July, with safety measures in place for guests and staff, including advance online ticketing, temperature screenings, and reduced capacity of 25%. Masks are required for everyone, including the glass blowers, which has created a unique challenge for them, since they usually blow on the glass with their mouths to shape it during their live demos.
“So you’ll see us blowing glass just like you love to see glassblowing in corning, but just a little bit of a different spin,” explained Eric Meek, Sr. Manager Hot Glass Programs. “Our glassmakers have become accustomed to using their foot to blow glass rather than their mouth. So it’s really been a fun new way for us to do this ancient tradition.”

The Corning Museum of Glass has a fantastic cafe offering a wide variety of food. The food options are especially great given how large the museum is and the extent of time you will spend here. It was great to break up my visit to the Corning Museum of Glass with a bit to eat for lunch.
There is both indoor and outdoor seating available. Given that I visited in the summer, I choose to eat outside to get some fresh air.
Why The Corning Museum Of Glass Is The Coolest Museum In New York State
After multiple visits to the Corning Museum of Glass, I have to say that this is one of the most extraordinary museums in New York! Scratch that. The Corning Museum of Glass is one of the best museums in the world! And this is coming from someone who is not a typical museum-goer. While I will visit museums from time to time on my travels and have found some that I love, a standard museum visit for me is one to two hours max. But with the Corning Museum of Glass, that is not the case.
On my first visit to Corning, I spent four hours exploring the Corning Museum of Glass. This visit left me awestruck and gave me a newfound appreciation for glass. When I had the opportunity to revisit the museum recently, I was so excited to have a chance to visit again. This time, I spent over six hours at the Corning Museum of Glass, having to drag myself away to make the drive back to Buffalo.
The Corning Museum of Glass had me so engrossed because it is not a typical museum. The exhibits tell a captivating story, and there are interactive and entertaining experiences to have. You truly get the whole scope of how glass is made, from getting to watch a glass blowing demonstration, trying your hand at the Make Your Own Glass experience o and learning about the history and science of glass.

Experience The Corning Museum Of Glass
The Corning Museum of Glass is open daily from 9 a.m. 5 p.m., and 9 a.m. 8 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission is $20 for adults and $17 for seniors . There are discounts for students, as well as AAA and military members. Kids and teens are free! Also available is a combination ticket with the Rockwell Museum.
The Museum is once again participating in the Blue Star Museums program, offering free Museum admission to all active military and their families through Labor Day.

An immersive and visual experience, this exhibition was the first major Chihuly show to be presented in Canada. Chihuly designed nine installations, which were installed in more than 11,000 square feet of exhibition space including The Sun and Ruby Pineapple Chandelier. The museum purchased Ruby Pineapple Chandelier for its permanent collection and the Montreal community raised funds to keep The Sun.

You also may save money by purchasing a combination ticket to visit both The Corning Museum of Glass and The Rockwell Museum located in Corning’s Gaffer District.
The pass is valid for two consecutive days at each museum, and you may enter and exit both museums as you please. A free shuttle runs between The Corning Museum of Glass and Tioga Avenue every 15 minutes. Combination Passes purchased online must be picked up at The Corning Museum of Glass Admissions Lobby before visiting The Rockwell Museum.

Corning Museum Of Glass
A seasonal favorite open to all ages, this experience allows you to work with hot glass up close while staying on the cool end of the glassblowing iron at all times. Youll start by choosing the glass colors you want to use and then partner with our professional glassblowers to create your design. You will use a foot pedal to add compressed air into the blowpipe and watch as the pumpkin inflates and the glassblower guides and shapes the glass with special tools. After your pumpkin is shaped, it is removed from the blowpipe, a glass stem is added and it is placed in an oven to begin an overnight slow cooling process. Pumpkins are available for pick up after noon the next day, or may be shipped for an additional fee within the U.S. and Canada.
