Museums Collection Of Purported Dead Sea Scroll Fragments Are Fakes Experts Say
Forgeries and forfeitures
After inviting scholars to examine one of its prized possessions purported fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls, pieces of one of the first known bibles the museum announced in March that these had been found to be modern forgeries. Kloha says the museum has decided to return the items to their previous owners and could seek legal action to recover the money it paid for them.
Last month, U.S. authorities ordered the museum to forfeit the Gilgamesh Dream Tablet, a roughly 3,500-year-old cuneiform fragment from one of the earliest known creation epics. Authorities said it had been stolen from Iraq and sold by a major auction house with unsupported provenance.
Hobby Lobby has since filed a suit against the Christieâs auction firm, alleging that Christieâs provided inaccurate documentation when Hobby Lobby bought the tablet for $1.6 million in 2014.
Christieâs did not respond to NPRâs request for comment on the tabletâs forfeiture. It said later that it had not known that the documentation was fraudulent when it sold the tablet.
âWeâve found quite a bit about that item, and weâll continue to work with external researchers, experts in Afghan culture and history who have been on the ground in Afghanistan,â Kloha says.
He says the museum is consulting with scholars from Israel, England and Germany and is âstill working on the best resolutionâ for the item. âThereâs a pretty strong legal case for holding it,â he says.

The museum pairs high tech video and music in galleries and exhibits with historical artifacts to provide an immersive experience. To enrich their visit, guests can pick up a digital docent, a portable electronic device on which information pops up each time they enter a gallery or approach an artifact.
Museum Of The Bible: A Photo Tour Of What To Expect
On November 17, a brand new museum is set to open in Washington, D.C., that hopes to foster further dialogue on one of the most read books in the world, the Bible. The 430,000-square-foot Museum of the Bible will span across eight floors with a biblical garden, grand ballroom, and a restaurant by Chef Todd Gray, called Manna.
$42 million worth of cutting edge technology will also be featured with a digital entry arcade ceiling, a digital guide accessible through a smart phone app, and a 360-degree projection mapping employed in the 472-seat performing arts theater.
In order to get timed tickets in advance, guests will be able to reserve them online. The membership plans start at $60 for an individual and $150 for families.

The Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. returned a centuries-old Gospel manuscript to the Greek Orthodox Church last week, prompted by revelations that the artifact had been looted from a Greek monastery during World War I. The move is part of the museums broader efforts to investigate its collections, following a series of acquisition scandals that have tainted the institutions reputation.
Known as the Eikosiphoinissa Manuscript 220, the artifact dates to the late 10th or early 11th century. For hundreds of years, it was used during liturgical services at the Kosinitza Monastery in northern Greece, reports the New York Times Jane Arraf. In March 1917, it was among 431 manuscripts that were stolen from the monastery by a band of Bulgarian partisans, who operated in northeastern Greece during World War I, per the Museum of the Bibles website.
The museum says that it began investigating the manuscripts provenance in 2019, after Greg Paulson, a religious scholar at the University of Müenster, suggested that it was among the artifacts that had been looted from Kosinitza. The investigation revealed further evidence that this was the case, including the initials M.K. penciled onto the back cover of the manuscript other manuscripts stolen from the Kosinitza Monastery in 1917 were , indicating the place from which they had been taken.

Ill go ahead and say it: My concerns as I walked into the new Museum of the Bible in Washington this week were threefold. First, I feared that it would offer a shallow view of Scripture. Second, that the historical elements would be weak in their presentation. Third, that the Catholic Church would be negatively portrayed if not largely ignored. How serious a place will this be, I wondered.
To my great delight and amazement, I found a truly beautiful, richly textured, compelling, and powerful series of exhibits in this outstanding new museum. While not perfect and not everything I would prefer to see as a Catholic, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the Museum of the Bible exceeded nearly every expectation I had. It certainly shows what is possible with a half-billion dollar investment, largely funded by the evangelical Protestant owners of the Hobby Lobby company.
The fifth and sixth floors feature the World Stage Theater , a ballroom and gathering area, a lounge for museum members, a very nice glass-covered promenade offering skyline views of Washington DC, and the Manna Restaurant .

The Museum of the Bible opened back in 2017. Ive been curious about it ever since and now that I have visited I wish I had not waited so long.
Its very kid friendly and theyll really have a good time!
The first thing I think everyone should know is that the Museum of the Bible is a museum about the Bible and not a museum about religion.
Although there is obviously a lot of information about religion throughout the museum the focus is squarely on the Bible itself and is not evangelical in the least.
This means that even if you are not religious or do not share the Judeo-Christian beliefs in the Bible the museum is still well worth a visit.

The Museum Is Very Different From Its Original Conception
Central to critics reservations is the background of the museums founders , and the way in which they have used the artifacts in their vast, near-priceless collection.
The Museum of the Bible is the personal passion project of the Green family, the evangelical Christian family that owns craft arts and craft chain Hobby Lobby .
As religion professors Candida Moss and Joel Baden recount in their book on the Green family, Bible Nation, the Green family devotes a staggering percentage of its Hobby Lobby earnings reportedly about half of the companys pretax income to evangelical outreach and faith-based charity work. Much of this outreach is specifically devoted to ministry the Greens have, for example, placed newspaper ads in order to remind readers of the real meaning of Christmas, and have supported Christian educational institutions like Oral Roberts University, to which they donated $70 million.
Todays museum, which I was able to preview in a limited capacity earlier this fall, is a far less obviously faith-based institution.The mission statement only exhorts viewers to engage with the Bible, not to have confidence in its absolute authority. And the six floors of the museum, a sleek and glitzily designed structure, do provide a vast spectrum of exhibits devoted to a range of elements of biblical history. Exhibitions range from the straightforwardly informative to the kitschy .
