Ww2 Museum Joins New Orleans Library Museum Pass Program
NEW ORLEANS The National World War II Museum has joined the New Orleans Public Library s museum pass program.
Its the fourth museum to do so, allowing anyone with a library card to check out a two-week pass providing free admission for two adults and some children. The number of children varies according to the museum involved.
The library is thrilled by the partnership with the World War II Museum, the systems executive director, Charles Brown, said in a news release Thursday. This strategic partnership benefits everyone involved – but most importantly – the local community, he said.
Amber Mitchell, the museums community programs director, said, This partnership will help us reach even more families in our region, and help ensure that the lessons of the World War II will never be forgotten.
New Orleans Public Library patrons also can check out passes to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Longue Vue House and Gardens, and the Southern Food and Beverage Museum. A couple who checked out a pass to each museum over the course of a year would save $128 $56 of that on two adult tickets to the World War II Museum.
One of the elements of our mission statement is preserving history, library spokesman John Marc Sharpe said in a telephone interview. It really made sense for the World War II Museum to be part of the program and allow us to expand our mission.
He said the Ogden suggested a trial program which started in 2016, and Longue Vue joined soon afterward.

The History Of The Museum
The National WWII Museum started as the vision of Stephen E. Ambrose who wrote many acclaimed World War II novels including Band of Brothers, D-Day, and Citizen Soldiers. He dreamt of a museum that reflected his deep regard for our nations citizen soldiers, the workers on the Home Front and the sacrifices and hardships they endured to achieve victory. The National D-Day Museum opened on June 6, 2000 as the first stage of the truly comprehensive institution he envisioned. On September 25, 2003, the United States Congress awarded the Museum the designation of Americas National World War II Museum.
The museum is situated in downtown New Orleans on a huge six-acre campus. New Orleans was selected as the site of the museum as this is where Ambrose worked and also because Andrew Higgins designed, built and tested the landing craft, the Higgins Boat used in many D-Day invasions.

Tickets Dining & Entertainment
- The National World War II Museum is located at 945 Magazine Street. There is dedicated paid parking at 1024 Magazine St, but if you are staying in the Warehouse District or Central Business District, you might want to consider just walking here.
- Hours are 9am-5pm daily admission adult/student/under-5 $29.50/18/free. Beyond all Boundaries and Final Mission are $7 each. If you want to avoid crowds, try visiting on a weekday outside of summer. The museum can get very crowded on weekends.
- There are two restaurants located onsite: the Jeri Nims Soda Shoppe , which – as the name implies – goes for an old school soda fountain counter-service vibe, and the more traditional American Sector . Both serve sandwiches and similar fare, with the soda shop more focused on coffee and lighter meals.
- BBs Stage Door Canteen puts on exceedingly peppy 1940s-era stage shows, which includes the female vocal trio the Victory Belles, who perform morale boosting songs from the era.

John E Kushner Restoration Pavilion
Look through the pavilions glass to witness the restoration of WWII artifacts in progress.
Currently under restoration is a Higgins Industries PT boat, PT-305 that was built in New Orleans and saw service in the Mediterranean theater.
When restoration is complete the patrol torpedo boat PT-305 will be launched into her home waters of Lake Pontchartrain.
Following two to three months of testing, PT 305 will be moved to a custom-built boathouse and opened to the public.

National World War Ii Museum
The museum opened as the National D-Day Museum on the 56th Anniversary of the D-Day landings, June 6, 2000. The museum was spearheaded by author and historian Steven Ambrose, who you might know from books such as D-Day and Band of Brothers among others.
New Orleans was the home to Ambrose and the Higgins Industries, making it a great place for such a museum. For those that dont know, Higgins Industries built the landing craft, also known as the Higgins boats, for D-Day and other battles. In addition to the famous Higgins boats, the company also produced the famous PT boats used in World War II. One of which became famous, PT-109, due to it being commanded by Lieutenant, junior grade, John F. Kennedy.
A few years after its dedication, Congress designated it the National World War II Museum. That took place in 2003 and since then there has been great growth in not only the museum, but its attendance as well.
Battle Of New Orleans
During the final campaign of the , the British sent a force of 11,000 in an attempt to capture New Orleans. Despite great challenges, General , with support from the , successfully cobbled together a force of from Louisiana and , regulars, a large contingent of state militia, and local , to decisively defeat the , led by , in the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815.
The armies had not learned of the , which had been signed on December 24, 1814 . The fighting in Louisiana began in December 1814 and did not end until late January, after the Americans held off the during a ten-day .

My husband and I plan to come to NOLA to visit the National World War 2 museum.
My Grandfather stormed the beaches on D Day and I wanted to see this museum as a tribute to him.
We only have a couple days in NOLA and this museum is the reason we are coming.. If we have time we will do some other sight seeing but, its not the priority.
Any recommendations for a hotel near the museum that is in a safe area?
We have never been there so I have no clue about anything.. And reading about New Orleans is overwhelming to say the least.

Stay in the French Quarter and walk to the WWII Museum, that is what I did. Not much to do around that area once you are finished with the museum even if you stay there all day.
If your primary interest is the WW II Museum, I suggest the very popular Drury Inn, which is within relatively easy walking distance of both the Museum and French Quarter, right on the St Charles streetcar line to the Museum, French Quarter, and Garden District/Uptown, and is among restaurants and stores.
The French Quarter, more specifically Jackson Square, is the historical heart of the City, but I sense you are looking for a simpler experience, which Drury Inn offers.

A Pivotal Local Connection
The Higgins boat in the atrium gives a clue to the museums origin and location. During World War II, the Navy needed a shallow-draft landing vessel to bring soldiers ashore for combat. New Orleans-based Andrew Higgins had been building similar boats to navigate Louisianas shallow bayous, and modified his design for battle. By wars end, Higgins local factories produced more than 20,000 of the essential landing craft, inspiring Dwight Eisenhower to declare him, the man who won World War II for us. The museums Bayou to Battlefield exhibit details Higgins important contribution to the war effort.
University of New Orleans professor and author Stephen Ambroses 1995 book on D-Day inspired him to found the National D-Day Museum, which opened in New Orleans in 2000 with a single building. Since then, the museums mission has expanded to encompass all of the war, with Congress officially designating it as the National WWII Museum in 2004. The campus continues to expand as well, with a sixth building, the Liberation Pavilion , currently under construction.
