The Higgins boat in the atrium gives a clue to the museums origin and location. During World War II, the Navy needed a shallow-draft landing vessel to bring soldiers ashore for combat. New Orleans-based Andrew Higgins had been building similar boats to navigate Louisianas shallow bayous, and modified his design for battle. By wars end, Higgins local factories produced more than 20,000 of the essential landing craft, inspiring Dwight Eisenhower to declare him, the man who won World War II for us. The museums Bayou to Battlefield exhibit details Higgins important contribution to the war effort.

University of New Orleans professor and author Stephen Ambroses 1995 book on D-Day inspired him to found the National D-Day Museum, which opened in New Orleans in 2000 with a single building. Since then, the museums mission has expanded to encompass all of the war, with Congress officially designating it as the National WWII Museum in 2004. The campus continues to expand as well, with a sixth building, the Liberation Pavilion , currently under construction.

The 1850 House is a historic house museum located in the Lower Pontalba Building along the side of Jackson Square in the French Quarter. The 1850 House was built between 1849 and 1851 by the Baroness Micaela Almonester de Pontalba, the elegant townhouses flanking Jackson Square still serve their original purpose with private apartments above ground-floor shops. The 1850 House museum is the only Pontalba apartment open to the general public. The State Museum has furnished the apartment to the style and tastes of a prosperous merchant family in antebellum New Orleans, the museum is a showcase for furniture and decorative arts. The Museum gift shop, operated by the Friends of the Cabildo, is located in the 1850 House.

Located in Tremé, the oldest surviving black community in the United States, the New Orleans African American Museum is dedicated to protecting, preserving, and promoting through education the history, art, and culture of African Americans in New Orleans and the African diaspora. Early 19th Century: A Rapidly Growing Commercial Center

The next dozen years were marked by the beginnings of self-government in city and state by the excitement attending the Aaron Burr conspiracy and by the War of 1812. From early days the city was noted for its cosmopolitan polyglot population and mixture of cultures. It grew rapidly, with influxes of Americans, African, French and Creole French and Creoles of color , many of the latter two groups fleeing from the violent revolution in Haiti.

The Haitian Revolution in the former French colony of Saint-Domingue established the second republic in the Western Hemisphere and the first led by blacks. Refugees, both white and free people of color , arrived in New Orleans, often bringing slaves with them. While Governor Claiborne and other officials wanted to keep out additional free black men, French Creoles wanted to increase the French-speaking population. As more refugees were allowed into the Territory of Orleans, Haitian émigrés who had gone to Cuba also arrived. Nearly 90 percent of the new immigrants settled in New Orleans. The 1809 migration brought 2,731 whites 3,102 free persons of African descent and 3,226 additional enslaved individuals to the city, doubling its French-speaking population. An 1809-1810 migration brought thousands of white francophone refugees .

I scheduled my viewing of Beyond All Boundaries at the beginning of my visit. This 45 minute film, produced by Tom Hanks, provides an overview of World War II to get you up to speed for the exhibits. The film was developed after 6,000 hours of research of archival and stills to interweave 517 film clips of archival footage, 305 archival photos, and words & stories of actual WWII participants. The state of the art theater has lots of special effects to help you understand the events.

Tickets: WW II Museum Tickets Currently it is $5 extra for this movie and worth it!

Helpful Tip: Your show time is scheduled. Dont waste your time getting in line for the Beyond All Boundaries show more than 10 minutes early! There will be a big line, but everyone is escorted into a waiting area for a 7 minute pre-show, so the line order gets completely mixed up anyway. The auditorium is new and state of the art, so try to get near the center, but there is really no bad seats.

Experiencing The National Wwii Museum

Perhaps it was your father, uncle, grandfather or another relative who lined up outside a local military recruitment office to enlist after the day of infamy when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Maybe your mother or grandmother rolled up her sleeves and went to work with legions of Rosie the Riveters. Whatever your personal connection is to the greatest generation, the reason to learn about this time is to keep your familys place in history. My grandfather served in World War II, so the experience is personal for me. He was on the USS Catoctin which served in the Pacific Theater later in the war. The USS Catoctin was also positioned off the Normandy coastline along with 6,000 ships during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944 to taking the first footsteps to reclaim freedom in Europe.

This is a huge museum, so here is my suggested itinerary. I spent the entire day and easily could have spent another day here.
