Its been 40 years since Elvis Presleys home of Graceland opened to the public for tours. The last family member to live there was The Kings Aunt Delta, who died in 1993, long after the house became a museum. Nevertheless, the late stars daughter Lisa Marie Presley still likes to visit what is still very much home for her, including during the holidays.

Even now, an aura of mystery surrounds Elvis Presley. He never gave an in-depth interview, possibly because of astute media handling but more likely because he found it impossible to account for all that had happened to him.

Elvis Aron Presley, who was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935, but lived in Memphis beginning in November 1948, developed a true diversity of taste. The generally accepted notion that he fused country and R& B is essentially true, but he embraced Black and white gospel music, mainstream popular music, light opera, and more. Memphis was a good place to hear it all, and when Presleyat the time working as a delivery truck driverfirst went to Sun Studio to cut a commercial record in July 1954, he had more or less found his style.

Presley was successful in the country market surprisingly quickly: the music of established country artists such as Webb Pierce and Carl Smith was adult in content and execution, and Presley gave younger country fans something of their own. Much of its verve came from R& B, but it was marketed as country music, and the best exposure Presley got in 1954 and 1955 was on the Louisiana Hayride and from country disc jockeys.

Vocal Style And Range

The developmental arc of Presleys singing voice, as described by critic Dave Marsh, goes from high and thrilled in the early days, lower and perplexed in the final months. Marsh credits Presley with the introduction of the vocal stutter on 1955s Baby Lets Play House. When on Dont Be Cruel, Presley slides into a mmmmm that marks the transition between the first two verses, he shows how masterful his relaxed style really is. Marsh describes the vocal performance on Cant Help Falling in Love as one of gentle insistence and delicacy of phrasing, with the line Shall I stay pronounced as if the words are fragile as crystal.

Marsh praises his 1968 reading of U.S. Male, bearing down on the hard guy lyrics, not sending them up or overplaying them but tossing them around with that astonishingly tough yet gentle assurance that he brought to his Sun records. The performance on In the Ghetto is, according to Jorgensen, devoid of any of his characteristic vocal tricks or mannerisms, instead relying on the exceptional clarity and sensitivity of his voice. Guralnick describes the songs delivery as of almost translucent eloquence so quietly confident in its simplicity. On Suspicious Minds, Guralnick hears essentially the same remarkable mixture of tenderness and poise, but supplemented with an expressive quality somewhere between stoicism and anguish .

Whether you remember his music and films, or have simply heard stories from those influenced by him, you know who he is. And when you think of Elvis, your mind will wander to Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, the King of Rock n Rolls home for 20 years.

A Grand Welcome at Graceland

What better place to stay during my visit to Graceland than at The Guest House at Graceland, a luxury hotel that opened in 2016? After a 10-minute drive from Memphis International Airport, I stepped out of my taxi humming Blue Suede Shoes.

The next morning, as the tour bus took me up the sweeping driveway to what is probably the most famous residence in history, I was excited to learn more about Elvis life. This house meant the world to Elvis, and he loved to share it with his family and friends.

As I crossed into the marble foyer, I imagined being greeted by the King himself and escorted into the living room, complete with a custom 4.5-meter sofa, white carpets and a black baby grand piano. I was then led into the kitchen and saw the first microwave oven ever sold in .

We Absolutely Loved Graceland

We absolutely loved Graceland. I had heard that it is very tacky but I thought it was beautiful. It was amazing to see his house keys, wallet and other personal items belonging to the King. The memorial to Elvis in the garden was very moving. Unfortunately, there are crowds to contend with but I guess that is to be expected.

Guest House At Graceland In Memphis Tennessee

When Elvis and Priscilla’s friends would visit them at Graceland, they would often stay at a nearby Howard Johnson, a utilitarian motor lodge. For many years since Graceland opened to the public in 1982, Elvis pilgrims committed to staying nearby could make reservations at the kitschy Heartbreak Hotel, which embodied the same no-frills vibe as the Howard Johnson. But everything changed in 2016 when the Guest House at Graceland was unveiled. Priscilla helped design the 450-room hotel, which consists of the Heartbreak Hotels building and an adjacent building. The modern property features 20 suites that pay tribute to the King in a low-key style. Elvis is honored in each room with clever design touches that he personally preferred, including televisions mounted in the ceiling and bold color schemes.

Tips For Visiting Graceland And Elvis Presleys Memphis

Beyond the exhibits: Graceland during the summer and during Elvis Week in particular is a fun and fascinating place to visit even for those on a budget. Dont want to spend much money? Loaded with both quality and kitschy representations of the King, with import record albums, with examples of the ways in which an artist and celebrity can be made into an icon and brand, the souvenir shops function as Elvis and Americana exhibits in their own right. Elvis tribute artists sometimes perform impromptu mini-concerts on sidewalks and in parking lots, and Elvis Presley Boulevard outside Graceland on Candlelight Vigil night is an outdoor folk-art gallery, as fans create mixed-media tributes to the King in the street, using chalk, candles and other items.

Planning your visit: Give yourself plenty of time to explore Elvis Presleys Memphis, the sprawl of restaurants, shops and museums located across the street from the Graceland mansion. Opened in 2017 and perhaps still underappreciated, the best of the exhibit spaces devoted to costumes, vehicles, music and movie memorabilia and other artifacts from the Graceland archives compare favorably with similar showcases at the Country Music and Rock and Roll halls of fame.

Finding A Wider Market

Presley was already starting to show signs of breaking out of the country market when his Sun contract was sold to RCA in November 1955, a deal masterminded by Presleys new manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Parker persuaded RCA to pay an unprecedentedly high $35,000 for Presley, a singer of virtually untested appeal outside the country market. RCA, though, was able to catapult him into the national marketplace via television and concentrated promotion.

Presleys variety of taste and innate conservatism quickly became apparent in his career direction. He wanted to do movies, Christmas albums, gospel albums, and pop ballads. Perhaps he, too, saw rock & roll as something that might blow over, and he wanted a broad-based career in case it did.

Military Service And Mothers Death

On March 24, 1958, Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army as a private at Fort Chaffee, near Fort Smith, Arkansas. His arrival was a major media event. Hundreds of people descended on Presley as he stepped from the bus photographers then accompanied him into the fort. Presley announced that he was looking forward to his military stint, saying that he did not want to be treated any differently from anyone else: The Army can do anything it wants with me.

Presley commenced basic training at Fort Hood, Texas. During a two-week leave in early June, he recorded five songs in Nashville. In early August, his mother was diagnosed with hepatitis, and her condition rapidly worsened. Presley was granted emergency leave to visit her and arrived in Memphis on August 12. Two days later, she died of heart failure at the age of 46. Presley was devastated and never the same their relationship had remained extremely closeeven into his adulthood, they would use baby talk with each other and Presley would address her with pet names.

Chaffee Barber Shop Museum In Fort Smith Arkansas

Fort Chaffee, a historic World War II army base in Arkansas, is located about 2.5 hours west of Little Rock. On March 25, 1958, when Elvis enlisted in the army, crowds flocked here to witness the newbie soldier gave up his famous sideburns. The modest building fell into disrepair in the 1990s, but it was restored in 2008 and opened as the Chaffee Barber Shop Museum in 2009. It houses the original barbershop pole, photos taken on the day of the landmark buzzcut and the camera used by the local photographer. Each year on March 25, crowds arrive to commemorate Elvis Haircut Day. Participants can get their hair cut by Jimmy Don Peterson, son of the late James Peterson, who gave Elvis his buzz, as fans celebrate with performances and lookalike contests.
