Corvette Museum Commemorates 2014 Sinkhole With New Exhibit

Two years after eight of their prized cars plummeted into a sinkhole, the National Corvette Museum has opened an exhibit commemorating the incredible event.

The 20-foot-deep sinkhole tore through the Bowling Green, Kentucky, museum on Feb. 11, 2014, swallowing some of the country’s most admired sports cars, including a vintage 1962 black Corvette. No one was inside the museum at the time, and there were no injuries.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. A sinkhole formed Wednesday under the National Corvette Museum here, swallowing eight cars, according to its executive director.

Sometime before 5:30 a.m. CT, the sinkhole started to form, authorities believe. By 5:44 a.m., motion detectors were going off and police were called, Executive Director Wendell Strode said. Security cameras at the museum caught the destruction.

When emergency personnel got to the museum, they discovered a sinkhole 40 feet wide and 25 to 30 feet deep, Strode said.

“It’s pretty significant,” he said.

Of the eight cars that fell into the hole, the museum owned six and General Motors owned two. GM’s Bowling Green Corvette plant, the only factory that builds Corvettes, is across a highway less than a half mile from the museum.

Cars involved in the incident, which occurred inside the museum’s iconic spire called the Sky Dome, are these:

Staff were able to move 20 cars out of the Sky Dome later in the day after engineers determined that nothing was in danger of collapsing. Early in the day, Strobe said emergency personnel allowed museum staff to remove only one other car, the only surviving example of the “1983” Corvette. It had not fallen into the hole.

Hales added that the sinkhole had no effect on the nearby plant.

Lt6 Engine Has ‘lt7 Beta’ Stenciled On It

In numerous conversations over the years with teams that develop the Chevrolet Corvette, it’s obvious how much work they put into having fun with America’s sports car and the car’s fans. The crew seems to be having special fun with the C8, a model that started its life by going where no Corvette had gone before and only continues to do so. The teasing continued over the summer, perhaps unintentionally, but few realized it until recently. When Corvette Blogger toured the restoration workshop during the 28th Anniversary Celebration at the National Corvette Museum in September, the outlet did a video walkaround of an LT6 engine used in the Z06 sitting on a wood pallet specially constructed to hold the 5.5-liter V8. At the front of the engine, a square black piece of tape covered a portion of the pallet. No one paid attention to it.

Earlier this month, Corvette Forum member Andybump posted a photo he took of the same engine on the same pallet, wondering why the motor was in the garage next to an LT2 V8 in a room full of Corvette projects and concepts. Then user Sicky said they’d been at the museum in July and saw the same engine. In Sicky’s photo , there’s no tape covering the stenciled information on the pallet, revealing the words “LT6 Gamma” and “LT7 Beta.” The second stencil has our attention, considering it’s believed to refer to the engine we’ll soon find in back of the new Corvette ZR1, and suggests GM’s already well into testing.

The National Corvette Museum

Anyone who wants to understand how the National Corvette Museum came about should take a lesson from the Mississippi River. This greatest of all U.S. rivers traverses the country north and south, travelling 2,339 miles from northwestern Minnesota south to the Gulf of Mexico. By combining with its two major tributaries, the Missouri and Ohio Rivers, it becomes the third largest river system in the world, able to carry massive watercraft.

While not exactly seaworthy, the National Corvette Museum is also like a great vessel, massive not only in actual size and weight, but in the scope of its aspirations. No meandering creek could ever have set it afloat. Not even the tide of enthusiasm released by a dedicated group of Corvette hobbyists could raise it. But when that river of enthusiasts met up with a stream of supporters within Chevrolet and a groundswell of aid from the proposed host community, the Museum was launched.

Top Stories Of 2014: Sinkhole Opens Up At Corvette Museum In Bowling Green

The Corvettes have been recovered two have been restored but museum employees said Friday the lore of the sinkhole has continued to draw record numbers of visitors.

So on Friday, as oversized scissors snipped yellow “Caution” tape, the museum officially unveiled “Corvette Cave-In: The Skydome Sinkhole Exhibit.”

In addition to chronicling the story of the sinkhole, the exhibit provides geology lessons about how sinkholes form, museum employees said.

The National Corvette Museum’s board of directors decided that they would keep a portion of sinkhole, which happened underneath the museum’s “Skydome” annex, in June 2014. At the time, the CFO, Christy Thomas, said visits were up 59 percent, and revenue up 65 percent.
