Todays groundbreaking marks an exciting step in the transformation of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Our vision for the museum celebrates the vital role of the museum and the arts in the region and redefines its identity and connection to the city and the surrounding landscape.

From the outset, we have been inspired by the museums collections, the beauty and topography of the surrounding landscape, the creativity and vitality of the museums programs and the cultural and industrial history of southwestern Pennsylvania. The design seeks to reinforce those connections and history while at the same time anticipating an exciting future, said Rodriguez, who leads the design team with management partner Timothy Hartung.

The Dramatic Transformation Of The Westmoreland Museum Of American Art Celebrates The Importance Of The Arts And The Museums Vital Role In Its Western Pennsylvania Community And The Region

We were inspired by the Museums conviction that design has the power to fulfill aspirations for the future…We created architecture that strengthens the regional and national impact of The Westmoreland, renewing the Museums position as a destination in its own right.

Susan T. Rodriguez, Design Partner

Revitalizing a venerable cultural institution, the expansion of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art stands as a counterpoint to the renovated, original neo-Georgian structure, unifying past and present and the building with its site.

The L-shaped massing of the expanded building frames the landscape while providing a transparent backdrop, which links interior and exterior and reveals activity within the building. The new wing containing galleries, community and educational spaces secures the symmetry of the original building from the north and, with a dramatic new cantilever, creates a dynamic identity to the south.

The cantilever houses a new changing exhibit gallery. Panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling glass reinforce the connection between the Museums southwestern Pennsylvania context and the landscape works of the Scalp Level School that are critically important to the Museums collection.

A new landscape and sculpture garden extends the Museum beyond the walls of the building, taking cues from the geometry of the expansion and utilizing a rich textural palette of native plant material.

Exploring Incredible Artistry At The Westmoreland Museum Of American Art

Jim CheneyDisclosure:

The Laurel Highlands is a region known for its incredible natural beauty, but if you are looking to also get a bit of artistic culture, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art is a great spot to visit.

The Westmoreland Museum of Art is located in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. After undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, the museum reopened just a few years ago and features an incredibly beautiful building with modern galleries.

The Westmoreland, as its often called, was established in 1959 and has, over the years, amassed a fantastic collection of American art. While there is a bit of focus on artists from Southwestern PA and works featuring the region, the museum houses pieces from artists from throughout the country.

One of my favorite things about the Westmoreland Museum of American Art is that it is completely free to visit. In fact, Id say its easily among the best free museums in Pennsylvania.

The Westmoreland features three floors of galleries that offer a great look into their 3,400-item permanent collection. They also have several temporary exhibition galleries that showcase even more American art.

Most of the museums gallery spaces can be found on the second floor, including five permanent galleries: 19th-Century Art, 20th-Century Art, Post-1950s Art, Southwestern Pennsylvania Art, and Folk Art.

Probably my favorite space was the McKenna Gallery, which featured works of art that showcased scenes from southwestern Pennsylvania.
