The Tower Theater is at 69th and Ludlow streets in Upper Darby. Theres a lot of street parking nearby, though note that the parking authority there is just as brutally efficient as the PPA. There is a parking garage at the intersection of 69th and Chestnut. The Upper Darby municipal lot is at Garrett Road and Long Lane, so about a five minute walk from the Tower Theater. Of course, the 69th Street Terminal of the Market-Frankford line is a block away from the Tower, so public transportation is an easy option.

Virtual Exhibition Talk: Van Gogh And The Olive Groves

Join Dr. Nicole R. Myers, Interim Chief Curator and The Barbara Thomas Lemmon Senior Curator of European Art, as she discusses Van Goghs stunning series of olive grove paintings, brought together at the DMA for the very first time. Produced during the artists yearlong stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Van Goghs olive groves comprise one of his most ambitious, yet least well known, series. This lecture will explore Van Goghs motivations for painting this unconventional subject and the deeply personal meaning it held for him.

What Is An Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit

Opening Van Gogh Museum Editions Pop-up tour

Although each has its own unique twist, essentially, whether you purchase a ticket to “Immersive Van Gogh,” “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience,” “Imagine Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience,” “Van Gogh Alive” or “Beyond Van Gogh” the pop-up exhibit headed to the Kentucky International Convention Center each is working off the same material the 19th-century painter’s recognizable works such as “Starry Night,” “Sunflowers,” and “Cafe Terrace at Night.”

Ticketed visitors walk through an art-themed light show projecting hundreds of Van Gogh’s paintings onto walls, ceilings and floors, accompanied by a musical soundtrack.

While most exhibits are temporary, Newfields, formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art removed an entire floor of artworks from its museum building to establish its own permanent immersive theater. “The Lume,” as it’s called, is showing a Van Gogh exhibit, is comprised of 150 digital projectors covering 30,000 square feet of former gallery space which occupies the fourth floor of the museum building.

Where Is This All Happening

The iconic Tower Theater in Upper Darby! Actually, its a pretty amazing setup. I was wondering how on earth they were going to have a big open hall in that building. Well, they built the entire Van Gogh Experience on platforms above the seats.

The Tower Theater marquee

All you see as you walk is carpeting, but whats beneath that carpeting and the structure it covers are the same seats people sat in for decades to watch David Bowie, Prince and Bruce Springsteen perform. And when youre in the VR lounge, look up. Just a couple of feet above your head is the unmistakable ceiling of the Tower Theater. Youll recognize it immediately.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

Like the other exhibitions, Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience features giant digital installations of the artist’s most iconic work, accompanied by powerful soundtracks. What’s more, this exhibition features a virtual-reality component, which takes visitors on a journey through “a day in the life of the artist” via virtual-reality headset.

Is There A Bar Inside

Its the Tower Theater, and theres always a bar inside the Tower Theater. Van Gogh-themed cocktails are $10 to $15. Youll pay $6 to $8 for a beer. Wines are $11 for a glass though, notably, you cant get a glass of red wine. Why? There were concerns that drips and spills would stain the carpet. I dunno. Id sell the $11 wines and bring in a carpet cleaner, but what do I know?

Virtual Event: Van Gogh And The Olive Groves: Impressions Of Provence

Pop

Alongside the olive groves, Van Gogh sought to create two additional series of paintings dedicated to cypress trees and the Alpilles Mountains. Together, he intended these three distinct series to form a larger ensemble that he called Impressions of Provence. In this public symposium, scholars respond to the three motifs Van Gogh put at the center of his production in Saint-Rémy, exploring their meaning and the greater context the artist envisioned for them within his oeuvre.

Scarce Personalized And Social

Wherever these art-infused programs have gone, they have quickly sold thousands of tickets after Instagram posts generate substantial buzz. Like the pop-up museums of ice cream, color and happiness of pre-Covid times, these productions are designed with abundant opportunities for selfies and gram fodder. When the stage is set with fun, interactive quotes and props, people take the initiative to post themselves.

Groups choose a circle projected on the floor with the option to stand, sit or recline at their leisure.
