What To See At The Whitney Museum With Kids
Kids enjoy the Whitney Museum’s semi-permanent exhibition entitled The Whitney’s Collection: Selections from 1900 to 1965. What they get out of depends on their age. See some of the famous flower paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, the whimsical forms and patterns in the paintings of Alexander Calder, and representations of American life by Edward Hopper. Kids of all ages especially enjoy Calder’s Circus, the famous kinetic sculpture Calder made from everyday objects.
My teen girls really liked Jay DeFeo’s The Rose, a cross between a painting and sculpture where the image of the rose appears to emerge from the canvas. For older children, certain works like Norman Lewis’ American Totem may prompt more conversations about various societal issues like racism.
The bright colors and motifs in the paintings featured in the exhibit that highlights American modernism appeal to young kids who can learn about how artists represent ideas and objects in creative and unique ways.

For its newest exhibit, the Whitney Museum dedicates an exhibition Hopper’s depictions of New York through sketches, drawings, and paintings. The Whitneys Kim Conaty, Steven and Ann Ames curator of drawings and prints, who curated the show with senior curatorial assistant Melinda Lang, says, With an artist as iconic as Hopper, it can be hard to remember that he was also a human being and that he was living and working in a place that was actually this place over the course of decades.
The Nyack, New York-born artist first visited the city on family outings as a child. After high school, he commuted by ferry to the New York School of Illustration and the New York School of Art, and later relocated to Greenwich Village, where he lived for most of his adult life until his death in 1967. An inveterate flaneur, the artist was known to canvas the city streets with sketchbook in hand.
The museum and the artist have a long history. In 1920, the 37-year-old Hopper has the first solo show at the Whitney Studio Club and the Whitney Museum of American Art now has 3,100 of his works, more than any other museum globally.
Collectively, the range of Hoppers work is meant to add new light to our understanding of him as a person, how he moved around the city, what he thought about the changes going on around him and what essential aspects of the city continued to capture his imagination and kept him looking again and again at the city around him, Conaty says.

Move To The Upper East Side
In 1961, the Whitney began seeking a site for a larger building. In 1966, it settled at the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and 75th Street on Manhattan‘s Upper East Side. The building, planned and built 19631966 by and Hamilton P. Smith in a distinctively modern style, is easily distinguished from the neighboring townhouses by its staircase façade made of granite stones and its trapezoidal windows. In 1967, Mauricio Lasansky showed “The Nazi Drawings”. The exhibition traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, where it appeared with shows by Louise Nevelson and Andrew Wyeth as the first exhibits in the new museum.
The Whitney developed a new main building, designed by Renzo Piano, in the West Village and Meatpacking District in lower Manhattan. The new museum, at the intersection of Gansevoort and Washington Streets, was built on a previously city-owned site and marks the southern entrance to the High Line park. Construction began in 2010 and was completed in 2015. It cost $422 million.

World War I And Its Aftermath
During , Gertrude Whitney dedicated a great deal of her time and money to various relief efforts, establishing and maintaining a fully operational hospital for wounded soldiers in , about 35 kilometres northwest of Paris in France.
While at this hospital, Gertrude Whitney made drawings of the soldiers which became plans for her memorials in New York City.
