The team will work under the direction of Andrea Karnes, who was named Chief Curator in November 2021.

Prior to long-time curator Michael Aupings retirement in 2017, the Moderns curatorial team had at one point included four staff members Mr. Auping as Chief Curator, Ms. Karnes as Senior Curator, Lee Hallman as Associate Curator focused on the permanent collection, and Ms. Hearst as Assistant Curator. Since the departures of Mr. Auping and Ms. Hallman , the team has operated at a reduced size. These recent additions bring the team back to full capacity.

In a press release Ms. Karnes stated, We are so fortunate to expand and enrich the Moderns curatorial team with the additions of María Elena Ortiz and Clare Milliken, and the promotion of Alison Hearst. Anne Windfohr Marion Was A Billionaire A Rancher A Philanthropist And An Oil Executive With A Zest For Art

Yet they’re all in the same exhibition at the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, some 80 works by 47 artists. It’s evidence that Anne Windfohr Marion with the help of former senior curator Michael Auping had a sweeping interest in modern art of all kinds, the money to buy it and an eye for the exceptional.

Auping has been in retirement in California, but he returned to Fort Worth to put together the new show, “Modern Masters: A Tribute to Anne Windfohr Marion.” Standing in the first gallery, he pointed to three major paintings on the walls: Francis Bacon’s first self-portrait , Mark Rothko’s “White Band, No. 27” and Willem de Kooning’s “Two Women” .

Collectively, he said, in today’s market, just those three would go at auction for somewhere near half-a-billion dollars.

Highest price for a Mark Rothko: $87 million.Highest price for a Francis Bacon: $142 million.Highest price for a Willem de Kooning: $300 million.

It’s a testament to how cash-crazy the art market has been the past decade. But it’s also evidence of shrewd judgment and taste. Auping recalled the museum purchasing the Bacon for $5 million twenty years ago from a $10 million fund Marion had arranged so the museum could build up its collection before it moved into its new home, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winner, Tadao Ando.

The New Modern Art Museum Of Fort Worth

To us snotty east coast aesthetes, the designation Texass oldest art museum might have a ring equivalent to Montanas premiere mime troupe. But hold on the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth was founded as the Fort Worth Public Library and Art Gallery way back in 1892, decades before many larger cities got their own robber-baron palaces turned public showplaces. A mere dozen years later, the institution made its first purchase for the permanent collection: Approaching Storm, 1875, by George Inness. Not bad. By 1954, the museum had relocated to a Herbert Bayerdesigned building in the citys official Cultural District. Again not bad, especially for a city doubly cursed with the epithet Cowtown and the lingering, not so subliminal oppression wreaked by the glamorous televised existence of a metropolis a mere thirty-five miles to the east.
