Telfair Museums – Savannah, GA

Savannah, Georgia, 2006 / Built

Telfair Museum is in the center of the historic city of Savannah, Georgia. Facing historic Telfair Square, the museum was subject to the approval of the Savannah Historic District Board of Review. We consulted with the board, received comments in a public forum and revised the design in response until consensus and nal approval was granted. The building, a contemporary structure that harmonizes with Savannahs urban fabric, respects the traditional grid of the historic district. The height and mass of the museum relate to the surrounding structures. The glazed façade on York Street engages the tree-lined Square and is formed by two white architectural concrete screens framing glass walls, which break up the 120-foot long frontage into bays of less than 60 feet, as required by the Historic Savannah guidelines.

Telfair Academy: Art History And Architecture In Savannah

Designed for Alexander Telfair, the Telfair mansion was constructed in 1819 on the site of the former colonial Government House, the official residence of Royal Governor James Wright. Alexander commissioned William Jay, a young English architect, to design his new home. Jay had recently arrived in Savannah from England to oversee the construction of the residence of Richard Richardson .

In 1875, Alexanders sister Mary heir to the family fortune and last to bear the Telfair name bequeathed the house and its furnishings to the Georgia Historical Society to be opened as a museum. The Society hired German-born artist Carl Brandt to create the new institution. Working with New York-based architect Detlef Lienau and Savannah-based architect Augustus Schwab, Brandt remodeled the old Telfair home and constructed an addition to house a new collection of art. The museum opened to the public in 1886, making it the oldest public art museum in the South and the first museum in the United States founded by a woman.

Today, Mary Telfairs unique gift to the city of Savannah has grown into an institution comprising three architecturally significant buildings, over 6,300 works of art, and a proud history of educational programming and exciting exhibitions.

Just A Stones Throw Away Is The Owens

One of the nations finest examples of English Regency architecture, the home is filled with details that paint a vivid picture of its residents priorities and provide a rare glimpse into their thinking. In the 1840s, one of Savannahs wealthiest and most prominent families lived here, alongside 13 enslaved men and women and a child whose name we know was Fanny. Across the orderly grounds is one of the oldest and best preserved urban slave quarters in the South, which tells a story of its own. This is truly one of the most compelling historical sites in the country, says Kendall. Here, visitors are challenged to consider history from two very distinct points of view: to imagine the dynamic between nineteenth-century Savannahs most powerful residents and its least, and to better understand the complex narrative of urban slavery by engaging in nuanced thinking about the fabric of the American South.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Telfair Museums will be offering a promotion for art lovers unlike anything in its 136-year history. The Jepson Center and the Telfair Academy will open for free to locals across a six-county area of Georgia and South Carolina.

The new, free-admission program from April 2-Aug. 28 includes Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, and Liberty counties in Georgia, and Beaufort and Jasper in South Carolina. This adds 44 free days to the museums calendar in 2022.

The new offering is in conjunction with the opening of the landmark exhibition, The Art of William O. Golding: Hard Knocks, Hardships, and Lots of Experience. Golding was first tricked into climbing aboard a ship as a young boy while playing on Savannahs River Street in the 1880s. After returning to the U.S. Marine Hospital in Savannah, Golding spent several years recreating sights and ships hed seen during his travels.

The Telfair is already home to 23 of the 130 Golding drawings known to exist. This new exhibit features more than 70 of those drawings in one temporary collection.

The Jepson Center and the Telfair Academy are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Jepson Center: History And Harmony

After a century of collecting, exhibiting, and educating Savannah and its visitors about art, history, and architecture, Telfair Museums Director and Board of Trustees identified the need for a new, larger facility. Their primary objectives were to increase the capacity for traveling exhibitions, continue an emphasis on education and community involvement, and increase archival storage for a growing collection. The museums Board of Directors envisioned a building representative of its time but also open, welcoming, and inviting. They also understood that, in a National Historic Landmark District, it would be challenging to express these ideals in architecture.

Five internationally recognized architectural firms presented their ideas to the trustees in 1998. The trustees unanimously chose Moshe Safdie and Associates. Safdie offered an outstanding international track record of responsible, compelling designs in historic settings, and he excited them with his passion about the possibilities of the new project. Safdie also offered a clear and stimulating vision of a building that would harmonize with its surroundings and welcome the community.
