Where Is The Nmaahc
The NMAAHC is located on the National Mall at 1400 Constitution Avenue NW. It is between Constitution Avenue and Madison Drive, next to the American History Museum and the Washington Monument.
The NMAAHC is just across the street from the starting points of our National Mall and All in One Walking Tours!
There are many ways to get there and it is a short walk from many other destinations on the National Mall. We recommend this link for specific directions to the museum:
The nearest Metro Stations are Federal Triangle and Smithsonian It is also a short walk from Metro Center The Circulator Bus drops at the Washington Monument, just across the street from the museum. For more information on navigating the Metro, check out our blog post HERE.
Alternatively, many of the hop on hop off buses have a stop nearby to the NMAAHC.
African American Museum Washington Dc Hours
The African American Museum in Washington DC is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. Admission is free for all visitors.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture debuted in 2016. Several galleries on multiple levels showcase an array of artifacts ranging from slavery to the Olympics. The museums five-story building is inspired by a crown from the West African Yourban people. You must have a free timed-entry pass to enter the event. The National Museum of African American History opened in January 2015. Emmett Tills casket serves as a constant reminder of the black mans life and legacy. The museums curators purchased 37,000 items from the public and an Antiques Roadshow-style tour in order to collect heirlooms and treasures.

The NMAAHC is the newest Smithsonian and in my opinion, the most innovative in terms of architecture communicating meaning. The museums history exhibits start 3 levels underground beginning in the 1400s and then as you move through history you rise up through the levels. The ground level has the Contemplative Court and then the 3 above-ground levels focus on cultural and historical achievements.

How Long Did It Take To Build The African American Museum
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture took a total of ten years to complete, from the groundbreaking ceremony in February 2006 to the public opening in September 2016. The building itself is five stories tall and covers 175,000 square feet. In addition to the museum galleries, there are three theaters, an education center, a cafe, and a gift shop.
The National Museum of African American History and Cultures mission is to tell the story of America through the lens of black history and culture. A 400,000-square-foot museum is located on the National Mall, the site of the last open space. According to David Adjaye, the museum is a crossroads or joint of the citys monumental landscape. The silhouette of the National Museum of African American History and Culture reflects African art. The museums structure is made up of a 3,600-paneled, bronze filigree that is reminiscent of the Souths traditions. A lattice-work of light emerges from the museum floor as the sun illuminates it. Jay Adjaye wanted to evoke the feeling of hot summer by pairing his collection with sun-dappled breezes.

When we first entered the lobby, there was a museum staff member with a microphone who went over the layout of the museum and shared where the sensitive exhibits are , and answered any questions. My 8-year-old asked if they have an exhibit on Kamala Harris and the nice staff member said, not yet! Shes making history right now!

How Much Did Oprah Donate To African American Museum
The National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is set to open in Washington, D.C., will be supported by a $12 million gift from Oprah Winfrey.
Oprah Winfrey has donated $12 million to the Smithsonians National Museum of African American History and Culture. The gift from Winfrey is the largest to date, with $1 million already pledged. The museum will open in late 2015. It will recount the history of African-Americans from slavery to the civil war era. In addition, the museum is in talks with Oprahs estate to acquire memorabilia from her career as a media mogul and TV talk-show host. There are several notable items in the collection, including abolitionist Harriet Tubmans lace shawl and Emmett Tills casket.

Larry West was a mergers and acquisitions specialist when he happened upon an article in The New York Post in 1975 that said antique photographs were on the verge of becoming the next big collectible.Inspired, he walked into a shop in Mamaroneck, N.Y., and came across a daguerreotype an early form of photography, made on highly polished metal plates that is almost startling in its hologram-like effect. It depicted an African American man in a tuxedo, elegantly posed before the camera. West purchased it for $10.70.
Including tax, he said with a laugh in a phone interview.
The find kicked off Wests 45-year-long passion some might say obsession with daguerreotypes, as objects of beauty and as records of American history, including the active role African Americans played as both makers and consumers of photography from its earliest invention.
Now, an important segment of his collection, most of which has never been on public view, has been purchased by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., an event that Stephanie Stebich,the museums director, called a coup. The museum said the purchase pricewas in the mid-six figures.

We visited a few years ago when my daughter was 5 and my son was 2. Back then, I read a picture book of Ruby Bridges story as an entry point to talk about segregation and inequality. We did not go to the History Galleries then.
For this visit, my kids are 8 and 5 and we talked more specifically about why we are visiting this time. We talked about the evils of slavery in broad terms and the history of inequality. I showed them the museums website ahead of time.

a great way to spend the afternoon! a lot of different artists, from different time periods, all exhibiting some of the major currents that marked American art, my favorites being the collection on American Realism, featuring some great works by Edward Hopper and Paul Cadmus, among others.
There were very few exhibits in a extreemly large building. The set-up for the objects was ill conceived and the choice of items even worse. I have visited museums all over the world and the Smithsonian is by far the WORST MUSEUM I have ever had the displeasure of visiting. Ive seen the British Museum, London, the Bodlian Museum, Oxford, ENGLAND, the Tower of London, The National Museum, Belfast, Northern Ireland, The Irish Museum in Trinity Church, Dublin, EIRE, The Archaeological Museums of Odessa, UKRAINE, and Jerusalem, ISRAEL. How Long Did It Take To Build The National African American Museum
Construction for the National Museum of African American History and Culture began in February, 2003 on a five-acre site adjacent to the Washington Monument. The museum officially opened to the public on September 24, 2016, after thirteen years of planning, fundraising, and construction.
The National Museum of African American History and Culture will be open to the public on September 24. The buildings two distinct design elements are Corona and Polly. Corona is distinguished by a cast-aluminum panel made of 3,600 bronze panels. The main entrance to the museum is located on Madison Drive, on the porch. Since 2006, Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroupJJR has been a member of the design team for the new National Museum of African American History and Culture. He led a team of 32 consultants in the documentation and construction of the museum in order to ensure that the museums design intent and vision are met. The museum, designed by Freelon, has received several awards for its cultural and social themes.

Theyre gently folding up spectacular geometric quilts handmade by the steely matriarchs of Gees Bend, Ala., and fussing over displays of wide-brimmed hats fashioned in the ornate style of legendary Philadelphia milliner Mae Reeves.
One unexpected task on their to-do list: adding price tags.
These items wont be bound for a gallery in the new museum. Theyre being stocked in the gift shop, higher-end artisan crafts aimed at visitors looking for a piece of the museum to take home sometimes, a substantial piece. Among the colorful quilts are one-of-a-kind pieces that can set a guest back a couple of months rent.
At a museum that so many people have been waiting to visit for so long, a lot of attention has been paid to carving out a space where visitors can pick up a novelty, a keepsake, and yes, even a bona fide treasure. The museums retail operation is an excellent example of how the once-cheesy, forgettable gift shop has become a formidable institution-within-an-institution: Curators met with merchants for two years, sharing insights about objects in the collection to help develop gift items and keepsakes exclusive to the African American museum shop, says Ed Howell, the Smithsonian Institutions senior vice president of retail.
