They rotate the display of their permanent collection fairly often, which is nice, because at any one time they might not have a ton of space to show off the goods. The upstairs is reserved for a changing exhibition which often highlights contemporary West Coast artists. Wacky stuff abound.

Make sure to take a breather on the upstairs balcony and look out on the beautiful empty lot to the back of the museum, where trash blows by on a cool breeze past walls tagged with colorful graffiti. OK, the view might not be fab- but the weather always is, and the handmade wooden bench swing is a great place to sit with a pal and chat about what you saw inside.

Dont miss the museum café which sits in an old-fashioned church attached to the contemporary-looking museum. Theyve got reasonably priced sammies and fresh salads and BOOZE! You heard it here first: a little buzz is sometimes the key to appreciating art.

Masako Miki: Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons

Museums of San Jose (The Tech Interactive, San Jose Museum of Art, Children’s Discovery Museum)

The ICA San José is excited to announce our next Facade Project, Masako Miki: Night Parade of One Hundred Demons. The Facade Project will present a new commission that is part of Masako Mikis most recent work, Shapeshifters. This series references the artists ancestral traditions of Shinto animism, utilizing ykai characters from Japanese mythologies and folklore as a potent metaphor to explore the complexities of identity today. The simple translation of ykai is ghosts, deities, or preternatural creatures and appears in various forms like humans, animals, natural objects, and man-made objects. Some are humorous and bizarre, and others are more menacing. The most powerful attribute of shapeshifters is that they embrace dualities and flourish because of their idiosyncrasies.

Since 2015, Miki has been exploring the story of the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons or Hyakki Yagh, which refers to a parade of thousands of ykai. This popular theme in traditional Japanese storytelling and art is sometimes depicted as an orderly procession and others as a chaotic riot. For the artist, this parade is an essential and fertile vehicle to develop the next chapter of Shapeshifters.

    About Masako Miki:

Miki received her MFA from San Jose State University and lives and works in Berkeley, California.
