How Much Time To Spend

Most visitors should plan on spending at least 2 ½ hours at MoMA.

Quicker visits can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes depending on what you want to see at the museum.

Others reported short or no lines at all, but it all depends on when you go to the museum.

Free Opening Day May 14

SAN FRANCISCO, CA The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art today announced that admission tickets to the newly expanded and transformed museum will become available for online purchase on Wednesday, March 30 at noon at sfmoma.org.

SFMOMA will open to the public on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., following an inaugural ceremony. Opening day will be free, and free timed admission tickets for May 14 will be available online March 30. Timed tickets will be offered in 15-minute intervals. All visitors will require a timed ticket on May 14. Free Opening Day is generously supported by PG& E and SFMOMA Premier Sponsors Bank of America and Cadillac.

With nearly triple the previous gallery space, the new SFMOMA will display more of its outstanding holdings of over 33,000 modern and contemporary artworks than ever before. Highlights on view at opening include 260 works from the exceptional Doris and Donald Fisher Collection of postwar and contemporary art more than 600 artworks promised to the museum through the Campaign for Art cherished favorites from the permanent collection as well as recent work commissioned for the new museum. Deeply integrated into the city, the museum will feature nearly 45,000 square feet of free art-filled public space and will offer free admission to visitors 18 and younger in perpetuity.

First Thursdays + Free Days At Sfmoma

Thanks to the generosity of our funders, SFMOMA offers regularly scheduled free days and guests 18 and younger always enjoy free admission to the museum. We regularly update this page with upcoming dates and activities, but you can also sign up for our newsletter to be notified when new events, exhibitions, and activities are announced.

First Thursdays at SFMOMA

All residents of the nine Bay Area counties are invited to spend a day at the museum on us! From 18 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month, Bay Area residents can enjoy SFMOMAs galleries filled with lively and inspiring art and related events for free.

Tickets and event details become available about two weeks in advance, and reserving online is highly encouraged. Limit two adult tickets per reservation. Qualifying counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma.

Upcoming Dates/Programs

Head to the White Box on Floor 4 for a special screening of Las Muralistas: Our Walls, Our Stories , a 25-minute documentary, featuring women muralists whose works cover the walls of San Franciscos Mission District. Las Muralistas was directed by Javier Briones and edited by Claudia Escobar, in partnership with SFMOMA and will play all day every half hour starting at 1:30 p.m.

Do I need to purchase an admissions ticket to look at the public areas in the museum?

The free public spaces on Floors 1 and 2 open at 10:00 am daily and do not require a ticket. Enjoy artist JR’s Chronicles of San Francisco, Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing 895: Loopy Doopy , and Julie Mehretu’s HOWL, eon , or visit our two Museum Stores. To enter the galleries, a ticket is required.

Can I bring my food and/or beverages in the museum?

No. Eating, drinking, smoking, or sleeping is prohibited in the Museum. You may bring sealed food and drink containers into the museum if they are packed away in a bag and not consumed inside the galleries. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has designated areas for eating and drinking including Café 5, Sightglass at SFMOMA, and In Situ.

Are strollers allowed in the museum?

Unless otherwise noted on the gallery or specific exhibit, strollers are permitted inside the museum.

Yes, however, backpacks must be carried or worn on your front at all times.

Seca Art Award Exhibition

The 2022 SECA Art Award Exhibition celebrates Bay Area artists Binta Ayofemi, Maria A. Guzmán Capron, Cathy Lu, Marcel Pardo Ariza, and Gregory Rick. Each artist fills a different Floor 2 gallery with new, site-specific work showcasing their distinctive and exciting practices.

The 2022 SECA Art Award exhibition is free to see, along with all Floor 2 galleries, through May 29, 2023!

In 2009, the museum gained a custodial relationship for the contemporary art collection of Doris and Donald Fisher of Gap Inc. The Fisher Collection includes some 1,100 works from artists such as Alexander Calder, Chuck Close, Willem de Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, Anselm Kiefer, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Brice Marden, Agnes Martin, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol, among many others. The collection will be on loan to SFMOMA for a period of 100 years.

In February 2011, the museum publicly launched its Collections Campaign, announcing the acquisition of 195 works including paintings from Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Francis Bacon. Also under the auspices of the Collections Campaign, promised gifts of 473 photographs were announced in 2012, including 26 works by Diane Arbus and significant gifts of Japanese photography. Works acquired through the Collections Campaign are displayed along with the Fisher Collection in the museum’s expanded building, completed in 2016.

SFMOMA’s website allows users to browse the museum’s permanent collection. The SFMOMA App allows visitors to use their mobile phones to follow guided visit of the museum at their own pace while the App tracks their location.

Sfmoma Hours Membership And Admission

The new SFMOMA galleries will be open to the public seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Labor Day. The museums free ground floor public spaces, which offer complimentary Wi-Fi, will open daily at 9 a.m. The museum will have extended hours on Thursdays until 9 p.m., giving visitors extra time in the evening to enjoy exhibitions and programs. Permanent hours and a series of family days will be announced at a later date.

The gallery holds eight exhibitions each year, including solo, group, and thematic shows. Works cover a range of styles and media, from traditional to experimental, and all works are available for rent or purchase.

    In 2021, SFMOMA announced they are closing the artists gallery along with a publishing platform and the film program.

    How To Reach Sfmoma

    SFMoMA is closest to Powell Street and Montgomery Street BART, and SF Muni Light Rail stations.

    SFMoMA is just 0.65 Kms , and visitors usually take eight minutes to walk the distance from Powell Street station.

    From Montgomery Street Station, SFMoMA is much closer, and you can reach it in five to six minutes of walking.

    If you prefer cable cars, the closest stops are Powell Street and California Street.

    If a bus is your preferred mode of transport, get on to any bus heading towards Mission Street, Howard Street, Third Street, or Second Street.

    All these streets wrap around the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
