Commissioned by the San Antonio Museum of Art , the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Centers dance company has created an original production inspired by Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche, a special exhibition currently on view at SAMA.

Soy Malintzin re-envisions the controversial legacy of Malintzin/La Malinche, an enslaved Indigenous woman who served as a translator and cultural interpreter for the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés and became the mother of his first-born son.

Through the collective work of the Guadalupe Dance Company members and the choreographic artistry of Maestro Juan Carlos Gaytan of Colima, México, the production draws attention to different aspects of La Malinche, identifying with her as a woman in unimaginable circumstances.

The performance will be presented at the historic Guadalupe Theater, 1301 Guadalupe Street, San Antonio, TX 78207.

  • Arrive early! The museum gets crowded after midmorning and after lunch.
  • Children 12 and under get free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art.
  • No flash photography at any time no photography at all in special exhibitions unless otherwise noted.
  • The museum is closed on Mondays, as well as on certain holidays.
  • The Museum offers free general admission on Tuesdays from 4 pm 9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am 12 noon. Keep in mind that this is when the museum will be busiest.
  • Find free visitor parking across the street from the museum.
  • The San Antonio Museum of Art is a mere 10-minute walk from the Pearl Brewery. It’s a 30-minute walk from most downtown hotels.

During October, visitors will be able to join one institution and explore all of the citys vibrant visual arts scene. Participating institutions are offering reciprocal member admission, special events, and membership discounts.

The VIVA Culture and Mission buses will also partner with the museums and cultural institutions to connect and promote the citys art and historical landscape.
