The World Tournament of Historical Base Ball takes place every year in August. Guests get to take a step back in time to 1867 as vintage base ball clubs from around the country compete by the game’s early rules in a two-day exposition of historic base ball. The clubs engage in two days of throwing, batting and competition. The event is included in Greenfield Village admission.

The unprecedented scale of that success, together with Fords personal success in gaining absolute control of the firm and driving out subordinates with contrary opinions, set the stage for decline. Trusting in what he believed was an unerring instinct for the market, Ford refused to follow other automobile manufacturers in offering such innovative features as conventional gearshifts , hydraulic brakes , six- and eight-cylinder engines , and choice of colour . When he was finally convinced that the marketplace had changed and was demanding more than a purely utilitarian vehicle, he shut down his plants for five months to retool. In December 1927 he introduced the Model A. The new model enjoyed solid but not spectacular success. Fords stubbornness had cost him his leadership position in the industry the Model A was outsold by General Motors Chevrolet and Chryslers Plymouth and was discontinued in 1931. Despite the introduction of the Ford V-8 in 1932, by 1936 Ford Motor Company was third in sales in the industry.

During the 1920s, under Edsel Fords nominal presidency, the company diversified by acquiring the Lincoln Motor Car Company, in 1922, and venturing into aviation. At Edsels death in 1943 Henry Ford resumed the presidency and, in spite of age and infirmity, held it until 1945, when he retired in favour of his grandson, Henry Ford II.

Small wonder the drivers are so interested: The national landmark museum founded in 1929 by the creator of the Model T and father of Ford Motor Co. houses some of the most historic items in U.S. history, including the presidential limousine of John F. Kennedy, the chair used by Abraham Lincoln at Fords Theater, the Rosa Parks bus and the Wright Brothers bicycle shop.

The museum’s newest wing includes a sprawling, interactive Driven to Win exhibit that provides a comprehensive look at motorsports in all its forms. It took more than a decade from conception until the doors opened earlier this year as part of a rare collaboration between rivals Ford and General Motors, which is the presenting sponsor of the exhibit.

Racing is the embodiment of American innovation in the world of sports, but its reach has long stretched beyond the track to our showrooms, our roads and our culture, Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, told The Associated Press of the exhibit.

Measuring in at almost 19 feet long and costing $43,000 in 1931 , this beast of a Bugatti is easily one of the most ostentatious automobiles at the Henry Ford Museum. Only six of these French-made versions were ever produced, and because they are so rare, each one has its own transcribed history.

This particular model was first bought new by a German physician by the name of Joseph Fuchs in 1932, and came from the factory dressed in black with yellow trim. After fleeing to China with the vehicle the year following to avoid Hitlers reign, Fuchs remained in Asia until 1937 when the Japanese invaded, at which point he fled once more with his prized possession, this time to Canada. After finding refuge in New York, the cars block cracked one winter due to the cold, leaving it lifeless for many years. Then in 1943, a chief engineer at Buick by the name of Charles Chayne bought the vehicle and restored it after changing its color scheme to white and green. By 1958 Chayne was vice president at GM, at which point he donated the car to the Henry Ford Museum, and in 1985, all six of the original Bugatti Royale luxury barges were reunited for the first time in history.

Chrysler Gas Turbine Car

Chryslers regenerative gas turbine car was in theory a brilliant idea, as it took aerospace engineering and infused it within an automobile. Although several other automakers were looking into similar technologies after World War II came to a close, Chrysler was the only one to really take it to the next level. Fifty lucky people were allowed access to this automobile in 1963 in exchange for some unbiased real world feedback. While people loved the cars styling, low maintenance needs, and the fact that it could run on almost any combustible fluid including diesel, gasoline, kerosene, jet fuel, moonshine, and vegetable oil, it bombed in a lot of other areas.

Consumer focus groups said it sounded like a giant vacuum cleaner, and many lamented the fact that the option for a rear bench seat was impossible due to the massive turbine housing that ran down the center of the vehicle. The car also had issues starting at higher altitudes, and some people found the startup procedure to be tedious. Although the engine produced an insane amount of torque, it also fell flat on its face at higher speeds, and since Americans tend to ignore low end grunt in anything that isnt a truck, the Turbine Car never made it into the mainstream.
