Some of the best from the modern and contemporary collection at the Art Museum at Princeton University incl. from Frank Stella, Class of ’58It’s free. Great museum store. Nice cafe.

The museum has a wonderful collection and is very user friendly. I took my grandchildren and they enjoyed it also.

Very interesting place. Small enough to complete an overview in a few hours. Attentive staff offered details and tours. The collection is broad and includes European paintings, pop art, a few roman and christian artifacts, a few modern art pieces and early american objects. There are also many Japanese and Chinese drawings and silks which are difficult to appreciate. The items I found most unique were a small collection of European World War 1 propaganda pieces. The Museum is coherently laid out and each piece included a well written detailed explanation that offered the reader just the right amount of relevant information and context. For me, these written details made each piece more understandable and interesting. Over all is a was a great visit for my family. We saw it all but didnt leave exhausted. Then we spent some time in Downtown Princeton and concluded our day out.

Ancient Byzantine And Islamic Art

Ancient art has played a central role in the museum’s collection since its beginning. The first major addition to the collection included many Etruscan vases, as well as those from Egypt, Greece, and Rome. There are now more than 5,000 objects in the collection, documenting the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Iran, Asia Minor, and the Levant. The great diversity of artifacts also covers the various eras of ancient Egypt, from pottery to stone reliefs, amulets, wall paintings, bronze statuettes, and mummies. The Greek collection includes significant works of both black-figure and red-figure pottery, including the vase used to identify the Princeton Painter. It spans the broad range of artistic work, from Archaic bronze statuettes to terracotta figurines, jewelry to funerary reliefs, pottery from Rhodes, Cyprus, and Corinth.

Ancient Italy is in particular well represented in the collection, from the Etruscan vases, metalwork, and sculptures to a great breadth of Roman antiquities. The Roman collection includes portraits, sculptures, sarcophagi, carved bone, coins, statuettes, and a spectacular silver-gilt wine cup. The university’s heritage of archaeological work in Roman Syria has left a legacy of basalt sculptures from Hauran, funerary reliefs from Palmyra, and a renowned collection of Antioch mosaics.

In addition to works on display in the museum, a study gallery with hundreds of additional works is open to students and visitors.

Henry And Rose Pearlman Collection

Paul CézanneMont Sainte-Victoire

Henry Pearlman started his collection with the 1945 purchase, for $825, of Chaïm Soutine‘s View of Céret, seen in the window of the Parke-Bernet auction house while walking down Park Avenue. Pearlman had made his fortune through founding the Eastern Cold Storage Insulation Corporation in 1919 and knew little of Soutine or contemporary art at the time he started collecting. He would go on to amass more than fifty masterworks of late 19th- to mid-20th-century avant-garde European art, one of the most distinguished private collections of modern art in the United States. Among the most notable works are Paul Cézanne‘s Mont Sainte-Victoire, Vincent van Gogh‘s Tarascon Stagecoach, and Amedeo Modigliani‘s portrait of Jean Cocteau.

The collection has been much exhibited, including an international tour in 2014-16 which included the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford University, where it was the museum’s most popular exhibition on record, the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada, ending at the Princeton University Art Museum, where the collection has been on long-term loan since 1976.

Land and space are implicated in everything we do, in every action we take, every decision we make and every crisis we weather. Moreover, when either human beings or the environment changes the other does as well. These changes now occur on a scale and at a pace never seen before, thanks to the proliferation of military conflict and the dizzying pace of urbanization, industrialization and globalization. The artists in Nobodys Property are responding with equal parts poetry and insight.Nobodys Property will be accompanied by a 150-page, fully illustrated catalogue. With contributions by exhibition curator, Kelly Baum, as well as nine established and emerging scholars, the catalogue will include important new research on both contemporary and historical land art. To purchase a copy, please call the Museum store: 258-1713.

Merger Of Borough And Township

The first attempt to consolidate borough and township was made in the 1950’s . Two subsequent attempts were voted down by borough residents, in large part due to different zoning needs of the densely populated borough versus the more suburban township . The ability to win a vote for consolidation in the township required, finally, the participation of numerous Princeton University students, who did not have the same concerns about zoning that property-owning residents of the borough had. After four previous efforts at consolidation had failed, the residents of both the Borough of Princeton and the Township of Princeton voted on November 8, 2011, to merge the two municipalities into one. Student voters were active throughout the campaign and likely contributed strongly to the measure passing. In Princeton Borough 1,385 voted for and 902 voted against, while in Princeton Township 3,542 voted for and 604 voted against. Proponents of the merger asserted that when the merger is completed the new municipality of Princeton would save $3.2 million as a result of some scaled down services including layoffs of 15 government workers including 9 police officers . Opponents of the measure challenged the findings of a report citing a cost savings as unsubstantiated, and noted that voter representation would be reduced in a smaller government structure. The merger was the first in the state since 1997, when voted to consolidate with The consolidation took effect on January 1, 2013.

Savannah African Art Museum Hosting Kwanzaa Marketplace All December

The Savannah African Art Museum will be hosting a Kwanzaa Marketplace every Friday in December. Now in its second year, the Kwanzaa Marketplace will feature artists and vendors selling artwork, jewelry and other goods that are either from Africa or inspired by African culture. Organizers say the marketplace is a great opportunity to learn about Kwanzaa, shop for unique items and celebrate the cultural diversity of our community.

The museums education coordinator Lisa Jackson came up with the idea for the Kwanzaa Marketplace from her own experience putting together similar events in the past.Im from Brooklyn, New York, and I

worked with a lot of different groups that do a lot of these cultural events. We would do Kwanzaa events and have different artists and a marketplace, so it was something that I was accustomed to doing. It was something that I suggested we do last year, so we did, she explained.

Last year, the Kwanzaa Marketplace took place on two days, featuring just two vendors. This year, the museum staff decided to expand the event and feature more artists. Several of the featured artists and vendors participated in the museums Juneteenth celebration and are returning for the Kwanzaa Marketplace. For Jackson, fostering relationships with the artists and vendors is key.

We have a relationship with several of the artists here at the museum. Some are employees and one is a docent here, she explained.

In the early 1990s, redistricting occurred between the Community Park and Johnson Park School districts, as the population within both districts had increased due to residential development. Concerns were also raised about the largely white, wealthy student population attending Johnson Park and the more racially and economically diverse population at Community Park . As a result of the redistricting, portions of the affluent Western Section neighborhood were redistricted to CP, and portions of the racially and economically diverse John Witherspoon neighborhood were redistricted to JP.
