Discount day: Admission is $2 per person the first Sunday of every month, along with discounts to the theater, planetarium, and submarine tours.

Take preschoolers to the Science Playground, where sensory exhibits allow little ones to explore water and sand. Kids ages 4-8 can try their hand at windpower or make music at the Curium. Or head to one of several Innovation Stations to challenge older kidsâ STEM design skills. Check the calendar for upcoming exhibits, such as James Cameron â Challenging the Deep, an immersive experience following the famous filmmakerâs explorations and achievements in deep-ocean science. You can also take in a film in the Kendall Planetarium or step aboard a real submarine docked just outside in the Willamette.

Underground Hallway Between Buildings

The Portland Art Museums unusual configuration requires crossing below the ground level to go between the main building and the Jubitz Center. While it might be tempting to use this short stroll as a time to check your phone, the museum fills this corridor with rotating modern art thats worth setting aside some time to appreciate. The hallway is also home to the Portland Art Museums 300-seat theater, which PAM Cut uses to screen art films and other cinematic works.

Flash From The Past: How Past Experiences Can Shape Future Practice

In an effort to improve their visual literacy, PA21 looked outside the classroom for a lesson in observation. Curriculum led by Patrick Bowden, MMS, PA-C has aimed to improve students visual acumen through structured observation of artworks. Students spent an afternoon at the Portland Art Museum admiring works by the likes of Hank Willis Thomas. The curriculum is in its third year.

The Close Looking experience is a program designed to guide professionals in using art as a way to hone skills in observation, communication, team-building, considering diverse perspectives, and tolerance of ambiguity through exercises and activities conducted in museum galleries. Studies have demonstrated an increase in visual literacy and observational skills among medical students after undergoing systematic training in observing and discussing fine art1. The desired outcome is translating these observational skills in art to the interaction with patients, resulting in a more thorough physical examination.

I was surprised by the connection between our perception of art and the complicated patient interactions we have as PA students. – Tom, PA21

Docents At The Portland Museum Of Art Play A Vital Role In Introducing The Museum And Its Collection To A Wide Variety Of Audiences Through Individualized Guided Gallery Experiences

While docents come from diverse backgrounds, they all share a common interest in teaching, working with visitors and art. Using interactive teaching methods, docents encourage close looking, facilitate discussion in the galleries, and help visitors make personally meaningful connections with the collection and special exhibitions. By supporting the programs and goals of the Learning and Interpretation department, docents serve as ambassadors for the museum and reinforce the museum’s mission as a vital cultural center.

Docents assist in the process of helping each individual make meaningful connections by providing visitors with an opportunity to explore individual works of art in the collection through careful looking and group discussion. We train docents in a variety of techniques including Visual Thinking Strategies. Our goal is to encourage visitors to look at works of art in the collection through careful looking and group discussion. Ultimately, the docent will guide visitors to develop their own abilities to appreciate art, and to apply these looking and questioning strategies on their own. By using open-ended inquiry and layering in information throughout a tour, docents build opportunities for visitors to discuss and deeply engage with works of art.

The museum is not currently recruiting for new docents. If you are interested in learning more about the program,

    Portland Art Museum Collections

The museum has strong collections of prints and drawings, photography, Asian art, Native American art, and Northwest art. Its European and American collections contain some extraordinary individual pieces, especially from the 19th and 20th centuries. The huge prints and drawings collection was built largely by the late Gordon Gilkey and include Old Masters printmakers and the most recent examples of the art forms. And under chief curator Bruce Guenther, the museums modern art holdings have increased dramatically, partly because of the addition of the collection of the great modernist critic Clement Greenberg, which gives the museum a unique window into the development of advanced art in the mid-20th century.

Northwest art is a primary attraction, cataloging the developments in Western art traditions in Oregon and Washington since the 19th century.

Portland Art Museum Campus And History

First organized in 1892, the museums first exhibition was a set of magnificent plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculpture, now displayed in the upper hall of the citys library. In 1932, the museum moved into the primary building, designed by Pietro Belluschi: a gracious contemporary update of the Georgian style, sleek-lined and advanced in its ideas. The museums renovation of the Masonic Temple to its immediate north added more exhibition and office space to the campus in 2005.

Belluschis original design was ahead of its time. It was airy and admitted natural light into the museums galleries, especially the court beyond the entryway, and the visitor today experiences that grand space as a sort of surprise, given the museums relative scale. More wings were added, first to house the Pacific Northwest College of Art, then known as the Museum Art School , and then a warren of smaller galleries. The old Masonic Temple has become the Jubitz Center of Modern and Contemporary Art, though its old, ornate meeting rooms have been retained.

On the lower level sits the Whitsell Auditorium, a part of the Museums history for the past fifty years. Formally Northwest Film Center, now PAM CUT , the theater screens art films and has programming that supports local and international storytelling in all immersive formats.
