Museum Etiquette: Please Arrive Early And Respect Staff And Other Visitors

Please keep in mind that the length of time it takes to view an exhibit depends on its opening hours. Some exhibits, such as the One Hundred Years of African American Art, have rotating exhibits and a shorter viewing time. It is recommended that you arrive no later than 10:00 a.m. on a weekday so that you can see the entire museum and fully experience the interactive displays and galleries. You may still see some exhibits open after 4:00 p.m., but you will have to be more selective in what you see. We ask that visitors respect our staff and other museum visitors while visiting the museum. Our museum is a place where you can learn about history and enjoy the sights and sounds.

Censorship Of Seasons Of Life And Land

In 2003, a National Museum of Natural History exhibit, Subhankar Banerjees Seasons of Life and Land, featuring photographs of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, was censored and moved to the basement by Smithsonian officials because they feared that its subject matter was too politically controversial.

In November 2007, The Washington Post reported internal criticism has been raised regarding the institutions handling of the exhibit on the Arctic. According to documents and e-mails, the exhibit and its associated presentation were edited at high levels to add scientific uncertainty regarding the nature and impact of global warming on the Arctic. Acting Secretary of the Smithsonian Cristián Samper was interviewed by the Post, and claimed the exhibit was edited because it contained conclusions that went beyond what could be proven by contemporary climatology. The Smithsonian is now a participant in the U.S. Global Change Research Program.

Handicapped Parking At The Smithsonian Natural History Museum

There is handicapped parking on Madison Drive near the entrance to the museum. The museum has added two wheelchair accessible ramps that will take you to the top of the steps at the Madison Drive entrance, but these are rather long and steep. If there is a line to get into the museum, these ramps also take you directly to the front of the line. The Constitution Avenue entrance is easier, with much less uphill ramp, but there is no street parking of any kind.

Parking Near The Museums

We are spending the day in DC. Are there any parking garages near by that wont break the bank and are safe to park in? Or is it best to park outside and take the Metro in?

How many is we? Metro costs will add up quickly if there are several in your party and you dont already have SmarTrip cards.

Two garages that always have available spaces, are within walking distance of the museums, and are well-priced are the garages at Union Station and at the Ronald Reagan Building. The rate at Union Station for 2-10 hours is $20 and for 10-24 hours is $24. The rate at the Ronald Reagan Building for 4-15 hours is $25 and for 15-24 hours is $35. The Ronald Reagan Building also has a special rate for weekends. See their websites for details.

Thank you! Those prices are reasonable!

There are lots more parking garages around the mall that may be cheaper. I’d recommend checking out parking panda, spothero or something like that.

I use the app SpotHero for nearly every trip I take into DC these days. It makes it very easy to shop around for a parking spot.

Going rate for weekday all-day parking is in the $20-30 range but on the weekend or evenings it can drop dramatically.

So at least check that but as a back up the garages mentioned at the Ronald Reagan Building and Union Station are pretty much always available.

First, what makes you think any garages are unsafe?

Tips For Parking Near American Museum Of Natural History

It is always best to pre-book parking in advance before going out. There are plenty of websites and parking apps out there that offer easy interfaces for parking reservations at secure spots and garages. Most of these parking lots and garages offer cheaper rates than drive-in garages as well.

Even if you are parking in the most secure parking garages or lots, never leave your valuables exposed on your car. Many people make it a habit to drop off e-gadgets like mobile phones and laptops on the cars passenger seats. Car-jackers consider parking lots as an easy target and can steal any valuable from even the most secure car parking lots or garages. Do not underestimate anyone.

Do not randomly park anywhere in the city. Go for street parking only at designated parking spots. Do not park in reserved spots like disabled parking slot if you are not eligible for the reservation.

Keep an eye out for traffic signboards to avoid unwanted traffic violations. Many cities and streets across the country have parking restrictions like alternate side parking, loading zones etc. If you fail to move your vehicle when the restriction begins, you could end up on the wrong side of a parking ticket.

Never gamble with the parking meter if you have parked your car in a metered parking spot. Always move your car out before the metered parking timer runs out. Trying your luck with a metered parking lot could result in your car getting towed or impounded.
