American Paintings And Sculpture

The Palm Beaches, Florida: Discover the Norton Museum of Art

The Norton Simon Museum is home to a distinguished collection of American art from the 20th century. Early in his collecting, Norton Simon purchased a collage by Helen Frankenthaler, and would continue to collect works by Ronald Davis, Ed Ruscha, Josef Albers and Alexander Calder. In 1974, Simon took over the Pasadena Art Museum, merging its superb collection of American 20th-century art with his own and signaling the collections ascent to a position of prominence on the West Coast. With this one significant transaction, paintings by artists such as Lyonel Feininger, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin and Frank Stella carried Simons original core collection into the later 20th century. Sculptures by such formidable artists as Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin and Carl Andre expand the range of the collection to include American modernism.

Because of some confusion over domain names, and trademarks that havebeen legally registered in different countries, we receive a lot ofwebsite traffic and communications from people that are not intended forus. We do our best to respond out of courtesy, but at the end of the daythis is not something that we make any money out of.

As you will read below, we have been open to resolving this confusionmany times, but the other parties involved have either handled thesituation badly, or simply not been serious about getting it resolved, ultimately contributing to their own failure.

American Art At Norton Museum: Pollock And Okeeffe

Nortons collecting didnt ignore American painters, nor have successive generations of museum acquisition committees. Thank them for the purchase of Jackson Pollocks 1945 canvas, Night Mist, a fidgety, kinetic painting set against a most unusual black background.

Ernest Lawsons Hoboken Water Front is a bruising, brawling, hairy knuckled painting. Grimy, choking exhaust belches from the smokestacks of ships crammed into harbor, roiling the water. Feel the presence of men working and financing these ships as they try wrestling princely or piddling rewards from their toil on the water.

The Big Apple also serves as subject for Stuart Davis eye-popping New York Mural , another pickup after Nortons death. Davis seemed to paint with brighter colors and more precise lines than any of his contemporaries. You could slice cheese with his lines theyre so sharp. His colors appear fluorescent, as if hes painting with neon.

Norton Museum’s New Exhibit

These skills are on spectacular display in the most notable collection of fashion photographs ever exhibited together in the United States, A Personal View on High Fashion & Street Style: Photographs from the Nicola Erni Collection, 1930s to Now, which opens Saturday at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach.

The images by nearly 100 photographers tell the story of how fashion photography evolved, from the earliest Vogue photo covers of the 1930s, to the Twiggy years of the 1960s, to the supermodel era of the 1980s and the street fashion snaps taken by roving reporters such as Bill Cunningham, Vivian Maier and Amy Arbus.

Some of the images are among the most famous fashion photographs of all time, such as Horst P. Horsts Mainbocher Corset, showing a starkly lit model from the back, the ribbons of her corset dripping from her body. The German-born Horst, who died in Palm Beach Gardens in 1999 at age 93, made this photograph on his last day in Paris in 1939. He left his studio and all his possessions to escape the war hours later. Horsts image inspired Madonna, who used the same pose in her 1990 music video, Vogue.

Two sets of Helmut Newtons large-scale prints from 1981 prove this dichotomy best. The first set shows four women dressed in their shoulder pads and power suits. The second shows them standing in the same positions but stark naked.

J. Rachel Gustafson, the Norton Museum’s senior director of curatorial operations and research, said the collection “looks at 80 years of art making from the viewpoint of one passionate collector, Emily Fisher Landau.”

She said the collection spans from the earliest works into the 1920s to contemporary artists like Andy Warhol.

Norton Museum of Art’s “Years of Glass” collection

The year 2022 marks four decades of collecting contemporary glass at the Norton and it is on display through Labor Day weekend.

“We’re looking at the Norton collection holistically over that 40-year period and saying, ‘Well, what have we collected? When we look at the medium of glass, what does that mean? What are its forms? What is its function?,'” Gustafson said. “And so you have a quite diverse grouping of objects. It’s not just vessels like you see behind me here, but all sorts of different ways artists have deployed that medium to make something beautiful.”

Unrivalled Collection Of Waterfowl Decoys

Norton Museum of Art BKMG

Hunting has always been a central part of the Canadian experience. An important aspect of that history is now preserved in the Canadian Museum of History, thanks to the donation of an unrivalled collection of antique waterfowl decoys.

The 150 duck and goose decoys that are part of this collection were assembled over 30 years by Dr. Jim Stewart of Etobicoke, Ontario, a respected collector of wildlife Canadiana and author of two books about Canadian waterfowl decoys. The collection includes some of the finest works by many of the best Ontario decoy carvers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its a collection you wouldnt put together again easily, if ever, Dr. Stewart said.

About a decade ago, he was getting on in age and wondering what to do with the collection. Its not the sort of thing youd leave to your children or grandchildren, he said. The whole idea of building a personal collection is the fun and excitement of putting it together. He also ruled out the idea of selling the birds. He knew theyd fly quickly across the border into the hands of American collectors, who dominate the market for waterfowl decoys.

The Stewart Collection of Waterfowl Decoys will be an invaluable resource for the Museum and for others interested in discovering and exploring this aspect of the Canadian experience.

Brushstrokes Fine Art Inc

Mitchell WineBrushstrokes Fine Art Inc.

Mitch Wine is the son of Harold Wine, Chairman ofWSP International Limited. Both were directors of Brushstrokes FineArt Inc.

Mitch did a remarkably good job of rebuilding the company. Under hisleadership Brushstrokes Fine Art Inc. signed a major contract with theIKEA retail chain, and they ran a “photo to painting” process throughthe Michael’s Arts and Crafts stores throughout North America, and viathe QVC TV channel.

Unfortunately they still did not have the Brushstrokes.com domain, andwe were getting traffic that should’ve been going to them.

Rather than approaching us openly and directly, our first contact camein 2004 from Grant Weltman of WSP International,“a marketing company in Birmingham Alabama”. He offered us $5000 forthe Brushstrokes.com domain, which of course we turned down. Then in2005 we were approached by Mitch Wine “of WSP International”, tryingagain to see if we were interested in selling. Through all of this there was no mention of theirconnection to Brushstrokes Fine Art Inc. Had Mitch Wine approached usopenly from the beginning and made a realistic offer a deal would’vebeen reached.

Thus began an annual attempt for Brushstrokes Fine Art Inc. to try toget the Brushstrokes.com domain. It always came around the time oftheir Christmas sales push, usually shortly after Christmas when theyreviewed their sales figures.

European Art At Norton Museum: Monet And Picasso

During the height of Nortons collecting in the first half of the 20th century, European art was viewed as vastly superior to all others by collectors and critics on both sides of the Atlantic. The Norton features prime examples from most of the major figures, one highlight being Claude Monets Gardens of the Villa Moreno, Bordighera .

Monet is best known for his paintings of northern France, but he journeyed south as well. This toasty, luminous picture set on the Italian Riviera is as good as youll see of the work he did there.

Paul Gauguins Christ in the Garden of Olives stands as another highlight. This painting, which also serves as a self-portrait, may represent the crown jewel of the entire museum. A strong argument could be made that this is the most important piece of Modern art in the state of Florida and perhaps all of the Southeast.

This painting is so extraordinary to Gaugins body of work that it was loaned to the National Gallery of Art in London for its blockbuster Gaugin portraits exhibit which closed January 26 of 2020. The picture receives mention in the third paragraph of the National Gallerys exhibition overview online, before mention of any other work from the show.

The Blackburn Group Inc Invests In Atelier America Inc

Frida Kahlo exhibit to open Saturday at Norton Museum of Art

To finance this dramatic change the Blackburn Group Inc. of London,Ontario, Canada invested heavily in Atelier America Inc.

They paid Iguana Studios, New York, one million dollars todevelop a website for Brushstrokes. However they had one significantproblem – they didn’t own the Brushstrokes.com domain.

The first that we knew about any of this was inNovember 1999 when we received an e-mail from William Goldsteinrepresenting a “Canadian art company” interested in buying the rightsto the domain.

Unfortunately they embarked on a lot of deception in the early stagesof negotiation, which of course eroded away any trust. After negotiatingwith them over a four month period we were not able to agree on arealistic price for the Brushstrokes.com domain. They were prepared togo no higher than $150,000 and we were holding out for somewhere between$200-250,000. Had the deal gone ahead Atelier America Inc. could haverecovered this in a matter of weeks once the new business was launched.

In order to move forward with their “Plan B”, Atelier America thenregistered nearly 30 domain names, many in the form ofBrushstrokesSomething.com. The two that most people will be familiarwith were BrushstrokesArt.com and BrushstrokesDirect.com.

In November 2000 Atelier America Inc. went live with theirmillion-dollar website under BrushstrokesArt.com. This was laterswitched to BrushstrokesDirect.com.
