Built in 1845, the historic pair of townhouses, 14-15 Gramercy Park South, was home to Samuel J. Tilden, former governor of New York. who lived there until his death in 1886. Calvert Vaux, who became its next owner, combined the two row houses, creating the building that stands now ~ and has been home to The National Arts Club since 1906. A Clockwork And Laugh Track Or My Window By Sable Elyse Smith
On the fifth floor, it’s hard to miss a giant Ferris-wheel-type of artwork that slowly moves in the back of the gallery by the windows. Smith’s work does not elicit the kind of joy usually associated with Ferris wheels. The sculpture is made with furniture designed for prison visitation roomsthe low tables that keep bodies and movements exposedand an accompanying video shows footage from Live PD featuring police patrols. It “underscores the ways that the entertainment industry and institutionalized violence mutually reinforce each other,” explains the Whitney.

Even without a special exhibition, one of the most striking sections of the Mets American Wing is the Vanderlyn Panorama room which showcases the immersive-before-it-was-cool Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles by John Vanderlyn. Now, the circular space has been transformed by Tom Ford to invoke an epic battle between American and French designers. As a result, designs from both countries swirl around one another in a dramatic vortex.

The Girl Puzzle Roosevelt Island On View ~ To Be Announced
The Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation has selected Amanda Matthews/Prometheus Art to construct the Nellie Bly Monument on the northern end of Roosevelt Island at Lighthouse Park. The sculptural installation will be known as The Girl Puzzle and invites the viewer to experience many facets of Nellie Blys talent, conviction and compassion. The ground-breaking journalist and womens rights advocate exposed the horrors of the Blackwell Island Insane Asylum in 1887 on Roosevelt Island.

Attempts At Circulation By Rose Salane
Ever wonder what happens to the “slugs” that New Yorkers used to get into the subway without paying? Rose Salane has thousands of the coin-like objects from an MTA asset-recovery auction on the fifth floor and they’re everything from arcade and casino tokens to religious prayer tokens, from washers and hardware to plastic play money and more. She has set them out in piles by type on five tables and printed out what every single one of them is in a series of four lists mounted on a wall behind the tables. Through the slugs, you can see how they “reflect a sample of the beliefs, experiences and movements” of the masses who live in the city, according to Salane.

Edward Hoppers New York, on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art from October 19, 2022, through March 5, 2023, offers an unprecedented examination of Hoppers life and work in the city that he called home for nearly six decades . The exhibition charts the artists enduring fascination with the city through more than 200 paintings, watercolors, prints, and drawings from the Whitneys preeminent collection of Hoppers work, loans from public and private collections, and archival materials including printed ephemera, correspondence, photographs, and notebooks. From early sketches to paintings from his late in his career, Edward Hoppers New York reveals a vision of the metropolis that is as much a manifestation of Hopper himself as it is a record of a changing city, whose perpetual and sometimes tense reinvention feels particularly relevant today.

Located in the world’s foremost vertical metropolis, the Skyscraper Museum celebrates NYC’s rich architectural heritage and examines the historical forces that have shaped its skylines. On view now is RESIDENTIAL RISING: Lower Manhattan since 9/11, which looks at the more than doubling of Lower Manhattan’s residential population in the two decades since the turn of the century. Burger By Charles Ray
Charles Ray created three new sculptures that are found nearby each other on the fifth-floor terrace. The first is a man staring blankly, followed by a man eating a burger and finally a drunken manall surrounded by views of the Meatpacking District and the Empire State Building farther away. While each figure is distinct, as a set, they can be read as “emblems of our historical moment: drug-altered, precariously employed, drunk on beer and debt,” the Whitney states.

The Exhibition Has A Much More Cinematic Qualitythanks To Famous Directors
Part one of the In America exhibition, which debuted last year, had a far more linguistic focus thanks to its framework: A Lexicon of Fashion. For this anthological expression of the exhibition, the garments are presented with some narrative. In fact, the 13 period rooms that make up the show are all staged with daring wit and dramatic panache by some of Americas most famous directors: Tom Ford, Radha Blank, Janicza Bravo, Sofia Coppola, Autumn de Wilde, Julie Dash, Regina King, Martin Scorsese, and Chloé Zhao.

The Arts Of Buddhism At The Brooklyn Museum
As of January 21, the Brooklyn Museum will have a new gallery dedicated to the Arts of Buddhism collection. It’ll juxtapose artwork with nearly 70 objects from 14 countries dating from the second century C.E. to the early 2000s. Many of the works on display will be sculptural depictions of Buddhas and other enlightened figures, as well as ritual tools and ornaments made for use in Buddhist temples and a small selection of paintings. Among the objects newly on view are several of the Museums masterpieces, including a rare eighth-century image of the goddess Tara from Odisha, India a Chinese silver reliquary dedicated by a Buddhist monk and his mother and a gilt-bronze seated Buddha from southern China. There are also at least nineteen objects that have never before been on display at the museum. In addition, as part of the inaugural installation of the gallery, a pair of important Japanese mandala paintings, dating to the fourteenth century, will be on view for the first time in twenty-five years.

The early 1960s were a time of tumult and also a time of great leaps in the possibilities for art. The Jewish Museum exhibit New York: 1962-1964 uses the museums own influential role during those years as a jumping-off point to explore how New York artists responded to epoch-changing events. Work by dozens of major artists is on display, including Diane Arbus, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Nevelson, and Andy Warhol. The exhibition aligns with the years of Alan Solomons tenure as the museums influential director, organizing exhibitions dedicated to what he called the New Art and transforming the Jewish Museum into one of the most important cultural hubs in the city. The major fall exhibition at Frick Madison presents the largest and most significant promised gift of drawings and pastels in the institutions history. Assembled by Elizabeth Betty and Jean-Marie Eveillard, avid collectors of drawings and pastels, the exhibition includes European works ranging in date from the end of the fifteenth century to the twentieth century and representing artists working in France, Britain, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.
Charles Gaines: Moving Chains Chapter Two Governors Island On View To June 2023
Presented as the second chapter of The American Manifest, sited at the base of Outlook Hill on Governors Island with views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Lower Manhattan, Moving Chains a 100 foot-long immersive, kinetic sculpture evokes the hull of a ship reverberating with the low rumble of nine chains churning overhead, while visitors pass through below. Eight of the chains move along at the pace of New York Harbors currents, while a central ninth chain moves noticeably faster, at the speed of the ships and barges that have traveled the citys waterways over centuries. Moving Chains illuminates the exchange of people, capital, and goods cycling between the north and south that made up the slave trade, while calling attention to the political, judicial, and economic operations established in this countrys foundational financial system.
