Nevada Museum Of Art Welcomes Roundbout Catering As New Caf And Catering Partner
The Nevada Museum of Art is pleased to welcome local caterers Marybeth and Colin Smith as its new café and catering partner. The Café will open on May 2, 2022 for food service every Tuesday through Sunday from 11AM until 2PM.
Having the opportunity to partner with one of the most beloved organizations in the state is an absolute thrill for us, said Colin Smith, the chef/owner of Roundabout Catering. We are planning a new menu and cant wait to serve the Museum guests.
Roundabout Catering has been in Reno since 2011. Chef Colin Smith is the consulting chef for the Escape Lounge at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport the Roundabout Catering team manages food services at The Elm Estate, the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center and at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. Smith also served as the consulting chef and director of food and beverage for Nineteen 57 Bar & Restaurant located in the Club at Rancharrah from concept through August 2021.

Center For Art + Environment
The Center for Art + Environment in the museum was formed in 2009 as an initiative surrounding the interaction of people and the natural, built, and virtual environments. The Center serves as the Museum’s research department, and its Archive Collections house more than 50 archives comprising 12,000 items that represent work from more than 500 artists working on all seven continents. Significant archives include materials from Earthworks artists Michael Heizer, Walter De Maria and Lita Albuquerque, environmental architects such as Rodrigo Perez de Arce in Chile, Smout Allen in England, and Richard Black in Australia, and the ongoing programs of the Center for Land Use Interpretation and Land Arts of the American West. The CA+E is the only research institute in the world devoted to the study of art and the environment.
The Center for Art + Environment hosts a triennial Art + Environment Conference. The first Art + Environment Conference took place in 2008 with speakers: Matthew Coolidge of the Center for Land Use Interpretation, artist and architect Vito Acconci, photographer Michael Light, artists Fritz Haeg and Katie Holten, Bill Gilbert from Land Arts of the American West, and cultural organizer Cheryl Haines, and Geoff Manaugh of BLDGBLOG.

The Altered Landscape: Carol Franc Buck Collection
This is the museum’s largest focus collection and features contemporary landscape photographs. Since its establishment in the early 1990s, the collection has aimed to address and engage issues related to land use and the changing landscape. While the collection represents a diversity of artists, techniques, visual styles, subjects, and ideological positions, it is unified by two basic principles:
- A concern for inspiring dialogue about the impact of human activity on natural environments
- An effort to depart from idealized notions of scenic beauty and pristine wilderness that were dominant in the early 20th century.
In 1998, an endowment for Altered Landscape acquisitions was established through the generosity of the Carol Franc Buck Foundation. In 2011, a major book on the collection was co-published by the Nevada Museum of Art and Skira Rizzoli it received the Frances Smyth Ravenal prize for the best publication designed by an art museum in the United States in 2012. There are 150 images by 100 photographers in The Altered Landscape book, culled from more than 900 photographs the museum has amassed in its collection since the 1970s.

FIRST THURSDAYS:Meet friends and explore the galleries at this lively monthly social event featuring live music, performances and specialty refreshments. Hosted by Great Basin Brewing Company and KTHX Radio, this long-standing gathering welcomes guests and members alike.
Hands ON! Second Saturdays:Estelle J. Kelsey Foundation Hands ON! Second Saturdays offers monthly free admission, hands-on art activities, storytelling, a docent-guided tour, live performances, and community collaborations. Art Investigators provides children the opportunity to engage with Museum staff and take a closer look at artwork while engaging in a dialogue about key pieces. New exhibitions, community collaborations, cultural explorations, guest performances and monthly themes rotate in this engaging series of monthly programs. .
Sunday Music Brunch:Chez Louie hosts live music and brunch every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm. With a refined menu of creative dishes, mimosas and a Bloody Mary Bar, Sunday Music Brunch is the perfect precursor to an afternoon in the galleries. Museum members receive a 10% savings. Reservations strongly encouraged at 775.284.2921.
Guided Tours:Create a personal experience with a guided docent tour. A docent will guide you through the galleries, offering insight and history to the artwork on view. Guided tours are offered Saturdays and Sundays at 1 pm, Wednesdays at 1:30 pm and Thursdays at 5 pm .

The El Wiegand Collection
This collection centers around the theme of the work ethic in American art, including paintings that depict varied manifestations of work, laborers, or work environments. Highlights of this collection include 19th and 20th century works by Carl Oscar Borg, Lorser Feitelson, Lovell Birge Harrison, Helen Lundeberg, Guy Pène du Bois, Elsie Palmer Payne, Jacob Getlar Smith, Moses Soyer, and Grandma Moses.

Theres no better Reno venue to brush up on your own painting and photography skills than the Nevada Museum of Art. Nevada Museum Of Art Announces $60m Expansion Project
RENO, Nev. – The Nevada Museum of Art is set to get a huge upgrade, announcing a 50,000 Sq. ft project on Thursday.
The 60-million-dollar investment will support infrastructure and programming for K-12 students, educators and scholars in the communities we serve, according to leaders with the museum.
CEO David B. Walker says the project was five years in the making and is needed as the museum looks to grow along with the community.
It will be a seamless facility when its done, said Walker. There will be much more programming.
Work has already begun and is expected to be completed by January of 2025.

The Art of the Greater West Collection broadens conventional definitions of the West by expanding the scope of the collection’s geographic emphasis to encompass a region generally bounded from Alaska to Patagonia and from Australia to the United States Intermountain West. While this collection’s roots are grounded in the Sierra Nevada/Great Basin region, new acquisitions make connections between the diverse cultures and artistic practices of the Western region.
