The Layout Of The Museum Of The Rockies And Where To Find The Dinosaurs

Youll get a map of the museum with your ticket, but Ill make it easy for you. Just turn right after the ticket desk and youll be starting at the right end, aka the dinosaur end.

But before you get to the dinosaurs youll walk through the Landforms & Life Forms exhibit. This will give you some ancient history knowledge of the earth before you head on into the prehistoric era.

Siebel Dinosaur Complex

The dinosaur exhibits in the Museum of the Rockies are located in the Siebel Dinosaur Complex. Its home to the largest collection of dinosaur fossils found in and around the state of Montana. Siebel Dinosaur Complex is where youll find the Hall of Giants, the Mesozoic Media Center, the Hall of Growth and Behavior, and the Hall of Horns & Teeth with the Tyrant Kings exhibit .

Lets dive into that a bit more.

Hall of Giants has some information about the Allosaurus and other lesser known dinosaurs like the Deinonychus and Oryctodromeus, plus some other prehistoric animals like the woolly mammoth.

I thought it was fun that they had some recreations of dinosaurs that imagined what they looked like complete with hair and even feathers! Scientists believe dinosaurs were colorful, similar to how many reptiles nowadays are colorful.

The Mesozoic Media Center had videos and images about paleontology. There was also an area with windows looking onto the bones of dinosaurs in a lab like setting. Certain days and times have actual people working in there on the fossils.

Anything Else To Know About The Museum Of The Rockies Before You Go

Its a must-see thing to do in Bozeman! Ok, you probably gleaned that already.

Keep in mind this is a big tourist destination so it will be busy on weekends and during peak travel times, so plan on getting there as soon as it opens if you want to avoid the crowds or go during the week in shoulder season or winter. I was there toward the end of September on a weekday afternoon and there was hardly anyone else in the exhibits.

Important Note: For the foreseeable future, online tickets with a reservation for an arrival time are highly recommended as capacity will be strictly limited for the museum and walk-in tickets arent guaranteed.

Also, leave extra camera equipment in the car. You can of course bring your camera, but you are not permitted to use tripods, monopods, or selfie sticks in the museum.

Also, if visiting the Museum of the Rockies in summer, make time in your Bozeman travel itinerary to visit the Living History Farm on the property next door. It is an old homestead house that is affiliated with the museum. Skilled actors present a day in the life of a working farm in the 1800s and show you what it would have been like to live on the farm as you walk around the grounds.

How To Get To The Museum Of The Rockies:

The Museum of the Rockies is located at 600 W. Kagy Blvd. in Bozeman, Montana on the Montana State University Campus. There is free parking as well as an overflow parking lot for larger vehicles like RVs and trailers.

The Museum of the Rockies is usually open from 9:00 am until 4:00 or 5:00 pm depending on the season. To see their current hours and policies, click here. Children under the age of 5 are free and admission prices are $9.50 for children 5-17, $14.50 for ages 18-64, and $13.50 for ages 65+. There are also discounts for Montana State University students, faculty, staff and alumni, military members, AAA members.

What You Will See At Museum Of The Rockies:

The Museum of the Rockies has a lot of really fun exhibits. There is definitely something for everyone!

Some of their permanent exhibits include:

• Siebel Dinosaur Complex
• Paugh History Hall
• Living History Farm

There are also other changing exhibits. So there is always something fun to see! To check out their rotating and changing exhibits, you can check out their current list here. When we went, one of the temporary exhibits was all about reptiles and amphibians. It was really fun!

There is also a planetarium that has different shows daily. When we went to Museum of the Rockies last summer, we did not have time to go to the planetarium, but I had gone as a kid and teenager and the shows were really good! When we went, some of our favorite exhibits were the Dinosaur exhibit. You can see so many different dinosaurs! It is really quite an impressive collection. Ben really liked the Yellowstone exhibits. I really liked the Paugh History Hall because it showed the history of the area through artifacts from the fur trappers up through more recent events. Lucys favorite exhibits were the dinosaur exhibit and the lizard and amphibian exhibit.

Is The Museum Of The Rockies Family

Yes! My young kids loved it. There were tables with dinosaur toys on it and several hands-on exhibits.

Even though they werent quite old enough to truly comprehend the era of the dinosaurs, they knew about dinosaurs from TV and were completely in awe when we walked into the Hall of Horns and Teeth and they saw the monstrous T-Rex and Triceratops. It was so fun to see them wowed by the wonder of history and these magnificent creatures of the past!

On the upper level of the museum youll also find the Martin Childrens Discovery Center, where kids can have hands-on experiences and play in a way that teaches them more about Yellowstone National Park. It even has a mock geyser eruption at certain times throughout the day.

Programs And Events At Museum Of The Rockies

The Museum of the Rockies hosts a number of events, with a variety of age-group ranges.

There are programs that run daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or on certain days of the month . There are also summer camps for students who are about to enter 1st grad through 8th grade.

In 2017 some of the camps included Museum Detective Agency Camp, Disgusting Science, and Stargazers.

Does Mor Participate In The Astc Travel Passport Program

As a member of a science center or museum participating in the ASTC Travel Passport Program, you are eligible for complimentary general admission for two adults, plus children or grandchildren under the age of 18.

Please pack your membership card. Museum of the Rockies is not required to grant benefits to visitors who forget their cards. There is no universal database with all Passport visitors member data for admission staff to reference.

How Do I Use My Complimentary Museum Pass

Museum of the Rockies distributes a limited number of complimentary admission passes each year to staff, volunteers, business members, regional non-profits to support their fundraising efforts, and for marketing or public relations campaigns.

New Complimentary Admission Pass PolicyOn June 3, 2020, Museum of the Rockies implemented a new complimentary museum pass policy. This policy allows MOR to comply with complimentary admission pass financial tracking control measures and forgery prevention measures.

• These new passes have an alpha/numeric tracking barcode and a designated expiration date.
• To redeem, please give your complimentary admission pass to the front desk upon arrival. An online reservation cannot be made using a complimentary admission pass, so please use it on a walk-in basis.
• If a new pass is lost, the previously issued pass will be voided, and a replacement pass will be issued from the marketing or membership department. Please allow up to five business days for this replacement pass to be issued.
• Please make plans to use your complimentary museum pass before it expires. Once expired, MOR will no longer accept the complimentary admission pass. Expired passes will not be exchanged for new admission passes.

• For the safety of our visitors and collections, the use of drones, tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks, staging equipment, and/or lighting enhancements is not permitted at any time.
• Visitors may be filmed, photographed, or recorded by the museum for educational and promotional uses, including but not limited to the museum’s website and other marketing initiatives.

Commercial Use:

• Working members of the media and those wishing to take or use photos or video for commercial use must complete & submit the museums film/photography permit to be reviewed for potential approval by the museum’s . Proof of insurance and a location fee will be required.
• Please submit requests to film, photograph, or record audio at least 14 days in advance of the event whenever possible. Completing the permit does not ensure that permission to film, photograph, or record audio will be granted.

Museum Hours

Daily, 9 a.m. 5 p.m.

• The museum is open year-round except for five days. MOR will be closed on Jan. 1, Oct. 1213, Nov. 24, and Dec. 25. The museum will close at 3 p.m. on December 24. Days that the museum is open and hours of operation are subject to change throughout the year.
• The Apsáalooke Women and Warriors back exhibit gallery will be closed for two days on September 6 and 7. Learn why.
• TheTaylor Planetariumruns shows daily at the top of the hour from 11 a.m. 3 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. 4 p.m. on weekends. Shows seat on a first-come, first-served basis 15 minutes before showtime.
• Explore Yellowstone in the Martin Children’s Discovery Center will be open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours are subject to change at any time due to staffing levels.
• Museum Store hours are 10 a.m. 5 p.m.

Most guests spend up to four hours at the museum. We welcome you to stay longer as there are many exhibition halls to explore.

Curatorial Center For The Humanities

On April 28, 2016, the museum broke ground on a new $4 million, 20,000-square-foot Curatorial Center for the Humanities . The new building will provide storage and curatorial space for the museum’s humanities collection, which includes art, archaeological, historic, Native American, and photographic items. About 13,000 square feet of the building will be devoted to storage space, with the remaining 7,000 square feet containing office and work space. Private donations paid for the entire cost of the structure, which meant that no state funds were used. Slate Architecture of Helena designed the structure. Bill Walker was the lead architect. Civil and structural engineering, as well as planning for the electrical system, mechanical system, and plumbing were provided by Morrison Maierle, Inc., of Bozeman. The general contractor was Jackson Contractor Group of Bozeman.

Curators at MOR began cataloging all the humanities items in storage in 2015.

Construction on the building is expected to be complete June 2017. Humanities items currently on display and in storage will then be taken to the CCH for conservation and restoration. Moving the items is expected to take another year.

MOR officials said that the history hall exhibits will be completely revamped after the move to the CCH is completed.

Montanas independent non-profit institution the Museum of the Rockies is located in Bozeman, and it also functions as a college-level division of the Montana State University.
