WASHINGTON, D.C. The $500 million, high-tech Museum of the Bible, inspired by Oklahomas Hobby Lobby family, opens Saturday just three blocks from the U.S. Capitol.

Media from around the world gathered there this week for a preview of the museum, billed as the largest Bible museum in the world.

But media questions fired at museum leadership were not about the museums $52 million in digital wizardry, or its 20-some interactive theaters, or its 430,000 square feet of exhibits, including many rare artifacts from the Vatican and the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Or if its location near the Capitol was making a political statement.

Museum Of The Bible Collections Comes To Oklahoma Christian University

A collection of Jewish documents and artifacts from the Museum of the Bible will be housed permanently at Oklahoma Christian University.

The unveiling of the Sofer Collection was announced at OC, 2501 E Memorial Road, as the private Christian school celebrated homecoming on Friday and Saturday.

The Sofer Collection includes Jewish history, writings and culture. It is owned by the Museum of the Bible but it will be housed at OC’s Beam Library.

The Sofer collection originally was owned by Benjamin Sofer in the late 20th century. Born of a respected Slovakian Rabbinic family, Sofer had extensive knowledge in the areas of Italian books and culture, the Soncino Bible commentary, Hebrew bibliographies, Talmudic traditions, carpets and textiles, languages, and Jewish art, museum leaders said.

He helped establish an Israeli office for the auction house Sothebys, through whom he also acquired many of the items in his collection. Brenna Graham, the museum’s assistant registrar and library coordinator, said the museum purchased the collection from Avi Sofer, Benjamins wife, in 2014.

John deSteiguier, OC’s president, said the university and the Museum of the Bible hope that by keeping the collection intact and accessible, it will benefit local and visiting scholars. Leaders at the university and the museum anticipate that students, faculty, visiting scholars and the general public will be eager to see the collection.

There’s another benefit to housing the collection, as well.

OKLAHOMA CITY â

The Museum of the Bible in Washington quietly replaced an artifact purported to be one of a handful of miniature Bibles that a NASA astronaut carried to the moon in 1971 after an expert questioned its authenticity.

The move follows an announcement last year that at least five of 16 Dead Sea Scroll fragments that had been on display at the museum were found to be apparent fakes.

The museum replaced the original microfilm Bible with one that was donated by an Oklahoma woman who wrote a book about the Apollo Prayer League, which arranged for Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell to carry tiny Bibles to the moon.

“We know for sure that one on display right now went to the moon, but we could not verify for sure that the one we had originally on display had gone to the moon,” museum spokeswoman Heather Cirmo said. “We couldn’t disprove it, it just wasn’t certain.”

The $500 million museum was largely funded by the Green family, evangelical Christian billionaires who run the Oklahoma City-based Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores. The purported “lunar” Bible is just the latest item purchased by the family to come under scrutiny.

As for the Dead Sea Scrolls that were called into question, the 11 remaining fragments are being tested, with results expected by the end of the year, Cirmo said. Two of the fragments remain on display with signs noting that they are being tested.

About 1,200 businesses originally applied for between $5,000 and $100,000 in CARES Act funds.

There were two rounds of acceptance according to a spokesperson with the City of Oklahoma City.

The Museum of the Bible was accepted in the second round, receiving $100,000 of the citys limited CARES Act funding. According to the citys spokesperson, there were about 600 applying businesses and about 250 were approved.

The citys spokesperson said 79 of those museum employees are based here out of over 250 total employees with the museum. Those 79 employees were one reason the museum was eligible for the funding.

Their application is compliant with the guidelines, the spokesperson said.

The application sent in was for the small business continuity program. The eligibility requirements are as follows:

The city spokesperson gave a response regarding the reasoning of the program.

Christopher Sartin (17) celebrates time at OC and Museum of the Bible

In 2009, John Shipman, a venture capitalist who wanted to collect historical Bibles and open a museum in Dallas, Texas, invited Steve Green on a trip to Turkey to look at a Gospel of John with an ornate silver case.Green et al., This Dangerous Book. In November 2009, they traveled to Turkey to meet with the family who owned this artifact. Due to political reasons, however, the meeting did not happen. Green did have the chance to see some other objects while in Istanbul and came back to the States with a piqued interest in biblical artifacts. Over the next few years, he passionately collected biblical artifacts, first to support his acquaintances in their vision to start a museum of the Bible, and then for sheer excitement and intrigue. He also traveled to Israel and met with many people about Bible-related collections that might be for salethis got Green very excited to put together a collection of Bibles.

His aim was not to buy as a collector, but to acquire these objects to tell their story.Green et al., This Dangerous Book. The Greens already owned a business of educational Christian books, and Steves brother had been very involved in the enterprise from the beginning of his career. It was only natural for the Greens to go into collecting rare biblical artifacts, and they fully embraced this dream.
