Sony World Photography Awards At Mopa
Some of the worlds most amazing photography is now being exhibited in San Diego. The Sony World Photography Awards has come to the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park, with award-winning photographs that can be viewed nowhere else in the United States!
I ventured into MOPA yesterday with a combined sense of excitement and dread. Excitement to see a collection of absolutely stunning photography. Dread that my blogs amateurish efforts pale by comparison.
As I stood staring at these great works of art, I felt drawn into worlds that were almost like dreams, but somehow more than alive. Lenses had magnified small details and emotions. Shutters had caught ephemeral moments that are otherwise lost in time.
The annual Sony World Photography Awards consists of four different competitions: Professional, Open, Youth and Student. And there are many categories in which photographs are judged. It all results in an impressive diversity of images and artistic viewpoints.
My photographs of photographs dont do the originals justice, so Ive included just a few to provide a tiny idea of what you might see. And you have to really see it all in person!
The traveling exhibition departs San Diego on April 16, 2023.

Museum Of Photographic Arts
One of the first museums in the country devoted to photography, the Museum of Photographic Arts celebrates the art of life frozen in time. Its 7,000-photo collection spans the entire history of the camera, with photos by everyone from greats such as Margaret Bourke-White and Ansel Adams to emerging contemporary photographers.
Together with the Model Railroad Museum and the San Diego History Center, the museum is housed within Casa de Balboa, one of the many ornate buildings in Balboa Park. The space devoted to the Museum of Photographic Arts fills a total of 32,000 square feet, allowing not only for large simultaneous exhibits but also the extensive library of photography publicationsone of the largest in the country with over 20,000 volumes.
Two to three different exhibits tend to run simultaneously, often with 80 or more photographs each. The exhibits sometimes feature a single photographer, but more often on a time period or location. Some recent exhibits involved multiple photographers responses to the work of one of the greats, and the annual Youth Exhibition showcases the work of talented high school students.
Film and video are closely related to photography, and the museum doesnt ignore this. Its exhibits occasionally involve film, and the Museum of Photographic Arts is home to the 226-seat Joan & Irwin Jacobs Theater. The San Diego Human Rights Watch Film Festival takes place here each January, showcasing films that expose human rights abuses around the world.
Museum Of Photographic Arts History
The story of San Diegos popular Museum of Photographic Arts begins in 1972, when a group of local artists, photographers, photography afficionados, and patrons joined together to establish the Center for Photographic Arts. For the next decade, this organization would facilitate appreciation for the photographic arts in the San Diego community without actually having its own museum facility to champion.
This would change in the early 1980s, when the city of San Diego agreed to donate prime real estate within iconic Balboa Park to the cause of constructing a photography museum. The Museum of Photographic Arts would open its doors to the general public in 1983, and it remains today one of only three museums in the entire United States that are independent and devoted solely to photography and film.

Things To Know Before You Go
- Admission is pay-what-you-wish with a suggested donation.
- Avid photographers who visit the museum are encouraged to submit their own work to be considered as part of the permanent collection.
- The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, with an ADA ramp at the main entrance and accessible parking in adjacent lots.
- American sign language tours are available for each new exhibition, or can be requested with three weeks advance notice.

Whats At The Museum Of Photographic Arts
The foundation of the Museum of Photographic Arts is its sizable permanent collection. Consisting of over 9,000 distinct images created by approximately 850 different artists, this well-regarded archive of photographs contains work by such acclaimed photographers as Ruth Bernhard, Margaret Bourke-White, and Alfred Stieglitz. Particular strengths of the MOPA permanent collection would have to include photojournalism, social documentary photojournalism, and mid-twentieth century Soviet-era Russian photography.
The Museum of Photographic Arts always has multiple temporary exhibitions on display, too. These special exhibits run for several months at a time, and consistently feature work by some of the most renowned artists working in the medium. For example, recent exhibits of note involved subjects as diverse as contemporary Chinese photography, the history of cinema and motion pictures, and the career of Aaron Siskind.
The Joan & Irwin Jacobs Theater at the Museum of Photographic Arts regularly shows a mixture of documentaries, career retrospectives, and one-off movies. Sometimes this stylish space is even the site of film festivals or movie premieres. Given the nature of its eclectic content throughout the year, its well-worth checking the Jacobs Theater film schedule in advance of your trip to see whats going to be on during your visit.
