One of Canadas most popular museums, the MBAM was founded in 1867 and has welcomed its fair share of rotating exhibits, from Yves Saint-Laurent to Chihuly, and from Tiffany glass to Matisse, with many other exciting ones to come. Even more interesting for visitors is the permanent collection, an ode to Canadian art, from Amerindian artifacts to ultra-modern paintingsincluding the main players of the Quebec-based modernist movement: Alfred Pellan, Paul-Émile Borduas, and Jean-Paul Riopelle. Whether you visit for the popular exhibition or for the permanent collection, the MBAM is a must-do in Montreal. Insider tip: Wednesday nights are 50% off when major exhibitions are on.

Early To Modern International Art

In its size, variety and quality, the MMFAs international art collection is unique in Quebec and one of the three largest in Canada.

On display in the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace, inaugurated in 2016, it is a powerful, in-depth reflection of the highlights of civilization. The works of the Hornstein gift, as well as Ben Weiders Napoleonic collection, have been incorporated into the existing collection both chronologically and thematically, in a fluid and logical manner, in the pavilions presentation of 750 international artworks on four levels.

The Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace was named in honour of these generous benefactors, a couple who survived the Holocaust and made Montreal their home. Major Quebec and Canadian philanthropists, their exceptional gift to the MMFA of one hundred Old Master paintings, which considerably enriched its collection of international art, is the largest private donation made to a Quebec museum in modern history.

With its 1,430 paintings, sculptures, portraits in miniature, drawings and prints, the collection provides an overview of the main styles and periods in the history of art from the Middle Ages to the mid-nineteenth century.

One of the distinctive features of the collection remains its 111 seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, which make the MMFA an important repository of works from the rich artistic output of the Dutch Golden Age.

The Chteau Ramezay Historic Site And Museum Of Montral

Originally built in 1705 by Montréals then-governor Claude de Ramezay as his personal residence, the Château Ramezay is the oldest private historical museum in Québec. Permanent and seasonal exhibitions attest to the far-reaching history of Montréal, but none so much as the Château Ramezay itself, which served as the Canadian headquarters of the American Revolutionary Army in 1775 and 1776, and where Benjamin Franklin stayed when he tried to persuade Montréal to join the revolution. In summertime, the Governors Garden, located behind the building, evokes the gardens of New France, and comes alive with the Anciennes Troupes Militaires de Montréal parading in period military uniforms.

Outdoor Sculpture Garden In Montreal

The museum has lovely sculpture gardens, with 26 pieces of art on view for the public. Its in two parts. The CGI Sculpture Garden and the Max and Iris Stern Sculpture Garden run from Du Musée Avenue in the north to Sherbrooke Street and Bishop Street in the south.

The gardens feature some of the most prominent names in contemporary sculpture: David Altmejd, Jim Dine, Antony Gormley, Fernand Léger, Henry Moore, and Jean-Paul Riopelle.

The most stunning piece is definitely Dale Chihulys The Sun sculpture in front of the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion. Chihuly is basically the Tiffany of our era, with his elaborate blown glass creations.

From Romanticism To The Belle Poque

The Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace – Level 1

The Romantic Sentiment

The Romantic movement produced picturesque works with a wealth of historical detail. First appearing in England and Germany in the late eighteenth century, the mal du siècle or malady of the century, in the words of Alfred de Musset, spread across Europe following the excesses of the Napoleonic adventure.

Among the works in the collection are:

Francis I in Benvenuto Cellinis Studio , by Alexandre Évariste Fragonard

Charity , by Henri Leys

Landscape , by Georges Michel

Brittany Coast Scene , by Eugène Isabey

Young Woman Weeping at a Stela, or Remembrance , by Théodore Chassériau

Ludmila Komar, Princess of Beauvau-Craon , by Paul Delaroche

Leda and the Swan , by Jean-Jacques Feuchère

Forever!! Never!! , by Pierre-Eugène-Émile Hébert

The Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace – Level 1

Orientalism

Orientalism developed as an art movement following Napoleons Egyptian Campaign in 1798 and particularly in the nineteenth century, a time of European conquest and colonization of North Africa and the Middle East. The first generation of Romantic artists, represented in this section by works by Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps and Eugène Fromentin, dreamed of finding in the East an ancient world exalted by the vivid colours of the exotic, while the second generation, paying closer attention to ethnological accuracy, sometimes fell into the trap of a facile bazaar Orientalism.”

Jim Dine The King Of Hearts

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is a bit obsessed with American Pop artist Jim Dine, an obsession that I wholly approve of. Theres his massive Twin Heart sculpture as you walk in the main entrance.

Theres a sculpture trio on the opposite side of the street and one on Desmarais Street thats blue with attached tools. Inside, theres a skull painting and Dines 1996 take on the Venus de Milo, called At the Carnival. The latter consists of three towering multicolored carved wood Venuses without heads.
