What You Can Enjoy At Ica Boston

ICA shows typically feature individual leading and emerging artists such as Steve McQueen, Jeff Koons, Anish Kapoor, Tara Donovan, Shepard Fairey, and Cindy Sherman, thematic shows, and new commissioned works.

The dramatic space provided by ICAs building on the South Boston Waterfront allows a blurring of boundaries between performance, art, film/video, presentations, and contemporary culture sometimes with unexpected results.

For example, when ICA presented graphic artist Shepard Faireys first solo museum show and he arrived to perform as a guest DJ to kick off the opening, the Boston Police circumvented his appearance by arresting him on two outstanding warrants related to graffiti complaints stemming from when he put up his posters in unauthorized public spaces. Was his arrest staged, or did art collide with real life? That question has never been definitively answered but it is a perfect example of the convergence of art with life that youll find in many of the presentations here.

ICAs eclectic programming draws crowds with diverse interests such as contemporary dance, music, performance, and films. Plus they host lots of parties, family days, tours, and even teen programming. Check the ICA website for details youll usually find plenty of interesting things going on.

You can also find many ICA events such as new shows and summer concerts listed on our Boston monthly events calendars.

History Of The Museum

Installation view of the exhibition, " Humble Masterpieces"

Founded in 1936 as the Boston Museum of Modern Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art has seen numerous changes over the ensuing decades. It was originally housed in the Busch-Reisinger and Fogg Museums at Harvard University. The name was eventually changed to the Institute of Modern Art in 1939. Adopting its current moniker eight years later, the museum would move to gallery space on Newbury Street, Beacon Street and Soldiers Field Road as well as a former police station on Boylston Street. It opened in its 65,000-square-foot current location in 2006.

The museum has hosted numerous first time exhibitions featuring works by Paul Gauguin, Frank Lloyd Wright and Francesco Clemente. It also was the setting for New Englands first survey of African-American artists. Since occupying its present exhibit and performing arts space, the Institute has embarked on a campaign to create its own permanent collection and to continue hosting a variety of traveling exhibitions.
