The Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum in Boston, Massachusetts. It is the 20th-largest art museum in the world, measured by public gallery area. It contains 8,161 paintings and more than 450,000 works of art, making it one of the most comprehensive collections in the Americas. With more than 1.2 million visitors a year, it is the 52ndmost visited art museum in the world as of 2019.

Founded in 1870 in Copley Square, the museum moved to its current Fenway location in 1909. It is affiliated with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts.

The Source Of Collection And Brief Story Of Museum

In contrast to the above listed large galleries, the private collection of the wealthy Hungarian noble family Esterházy provides the basis for the fine art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts and not imperial or royal estates. The paintings, drawings and engravings in this collection were purchased by the Hungarian state in 1870. The exhibition material has been significantly expanded since and is now considered the largest collection in Central Europe. The exhibited artists include Leonardo, Raffaello, Titian, Dürer, El Greco, Velázquez, Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Tiepolo, Goya, Manet, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir and Cézanne.

In the initial years, the Academy housed the collection but it soon became too small. The current building was inaugurated in 1906 by Franz Joseph himself, Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, within the framework of the large millennial investments. One hundred years had to pass for the first major expansion and conversion. Reconstruction was completed in 2018 so the modernized museum is now again open to visitors.

The Slave Ship Jmw Turner

The Slave Ship is one of the most famous paintings by J.M.W. Turner , the Renowned English painter and one of the leading artists of the Romantic era in the 19th century. Its considered to be a prime example of Romantic maritime paintings.

The work was originally known as Slavers Throwing overboard the Dead and DyingTyphon coming on, a title that pretty much explains what is depicted. It was produced around that strong voices for abolishing slavery were raised all across the world.

Experience For The Eyes

Nothing lends itself more to slowing down than experiencing art. Currently we have two special exhibitions, Joseph Holston: Color in Freedom, Journey Along the Underground Railroad, which closes Jan. 15, and From the Pages of PAN: Art Nouveau Prints, 1895-1900, which closes Jan. 29. Additionally, a special collection of prints by Penns Woods Printmakers, based in Chambersburg, Pa., can be seen in the museums glass hallway cases through Dec. 28.

Those looking for a specific holiday connection can find it in two objects that are part of our collection.

One piece that will return on display for the Christmas season is Cold Sauce with Christmas Pudding, by Frederick Stuart Church. Originally published in The Century Magazine article Our Christmas Pictures by W. Lewis Fraser in 1894, this whimsical piece features a woman, a bear and rabbits surrounding a traditional English Christmas pudding.

Church, an American artist, produced the scene in black and white so it could specifically be printed for the magazine. The drawing has become a favorite of museum guests over the years as it makes a rare appearance only during the holidays.

Another holiday painting on display is William H. Singer Jr.s Christmas Eve, which can be found in our administrative office. The white hills and icy waters below depict a Norwegian winter night. The chilly scene is warmed by the soft yellow glow of lights in the church and homes.

Experience For The Hands

We always encourage the creation of art of any kind. And for crafty visitors, we are offering two holiday-themed art classes.

The first is a wreath-making workshop 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6. Sukey Rankin will lead students to make a festive winter wreath using fresh greenery, herbs, and everlastings. Supplies will be provided however, participants are asked to bring their own embellishments, gloves, and clippers. Cost is $70 or $60 for museum members.

For the younger crowd, we have a Winter Art Workshop for Kids, 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. Students will create art that is inspired by winter and take their completed project home. Cost is $15 or $10 for members.

Museums Of Fine Art And Their Public

The fact that people go to the Louvre museum in Paris to see the original painting Mona Lisa when they can see a reproduction anywhere leads us to question some assumptions about the role of museums of fine art in todays world

One of the most famous works of art in the world is Leonardo da Vincis Mona Lisa. Nearly everyone who goes to see the original will already be familiar with it from reproductions, but they accept that fine art is more rewardingly viewed in its original form.

However, if Mona Lisa was a famous novel, few people would bother to go to a museum to read the writers actual manuscript rather than a printed reproduction. This might be explained by the fact that the novel has evolved precisely because of technological developments that made it possible to print out huge numbers of texts, whereas oil paintings have always been produced as unique objects. In addition, it could be argued that the practice of interpreting or reading each medium follows different conventions. With novels, the reader attends mainly to the meaning of words rather than the way they are printed on the page, whereas the reader of a painting must attend just as closely to the material form of marks and shapes in the picture as to any ideas they may signify.

LONDON For Hans-Peter Wipplinger, the director of Viennas Leopold Museum, the last few weeks have been challenging. As climate protesters across Europe stepped up their attacks against art, Wipplinger took measures to protect his storied collection, which includes famous paintings by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. Bags were banned coats, too. The museum hired extra guards to patrol its five floors.

It didnt work. Last week, members of a group called Last Generation walked into the museum and threw black liquid at one of Klimts major works, Death and Life. A protester had sneaked the liquid into the museum in a hot water bottle strapped to his chest, Wipplinger said.

The Klimt, protected by glass, was unharmed. But Wipplinger said his security team could only have stopped the attack by subjecting visitors to invasive body searches, like at the airport. He didnt want to even consider that prospect, he added.

If we start such procedures, the whole idea of what a museum is dies, Wipplinger said. A museum is a place that should always be open to the public, adding: We cant stop being that.

Michele And Donald Damour Museum Of Fine Arts

The Michele and Donald DAmour Museum of Fine Arts, established in 1933 and housed in an Art Deco style building, includes a comprehensive collection of Americanand European paintings, prints, watercolors, and sculpture as well as a large collection of Japanese prints and representative examples of drawing, furniture, metalwork, textiles, glass and ceramics. The Museum houses a comprehensive collection of European Art and the Currier & Ives collection, one of the largest holdings of lithographs in the nation.

In The Loge Mary Cassatt

In the Loge is a remarkable work of art by Mary Cassatt , the American artist who moved to Paris and became one of the three great ladies of the Impressionist art movement. It depicts a woman who is staring through opera glasses to get a closer view of the stage inside the auditorium.

The scene takes place at the Palais Garnier, the opulent opera house in Paris which had only been recently completed at the time as it was built between 1861 and 1876. The remarkable detail about this painting is that we can see a man spying on the woman in a box nearby.

Water Purity And Availability

Many older buildings in certain areas of Boston are supported by wooden piles driven into the area’s fill these piles remain sound if submerged in water, but are subject to if exposed to air for long periods.Ground water levels have been dropping in many areas of the city, due in part to an increase in the amount of rainwater discharged directly into sewers rather than absorbed by the ground. The Boston Groundwater Trust coordinates monitoring ground water levels throughout the city via a network of public and private monitoring wells. Saint Luke Drawing The Virgin Rogier Van Der Weyden

Saint Luke Drawing the Virgin is a painting by renowned Flemish artist of the northern Renaissance Rogier van der Weyden. He was a generation younger than his colleague and he was influenced by van Eycks works, something clearly emphasized in this painting.

The composition of this magnificent painting is very similar to that of Madonna of Chancellor Rolin . The figures are, however, reversed. Its also fairly certain that the face of Saint Luke is a self-portrait of the artist.

The mission of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts shall be to establish and maintain a museum in order to house and exhibit a permanent collection of art as well as to provide space for traveling exhibitions, for the purpose of the enjoyment and education of the general public in San Angelo, Texas, and the rural communities of the Concho Valley.

Art Of The Pacific Islands

This exhibit includes artwork from several cultural traditions of the Pacific Islands, including Melanesia and Polynesia. Works in collection include jewelry, ornaments, and tapa cloths.

Of notable interest is a finely carved lizard of dark wood and shell from Easter Island a battle pectoral created from hundreds of Nassa shells, which highlights Middi art of New Britain and an 18th-century royal Hawaiian necklace.

Other highlights of the collection include a breast ornament embellished with small birds and stars that figured as insignia of prestige for the Tonga of the Fiji Islands. Featuring whale ivory and pearl shell design, it is recognized as one of the largest of its kind.

Prince Balthasar Charles With A Dwarf Diego Velzquez

Prince Balthasar Charles with a Dwarf is a portrait painting of renowned Spanish artist of the Baroque era Diego Velázquez . Its one of the many portraits that the artist produced of Balthasar Charles, Prince of Asturias , while he was the court painter of King Philip IV of Spain.

Although the child was only 2 years old at the time this Velázquez painting was completed, the artist still depicted him wearing a captain-general uniform with a commanders stick in hand. The court dwarf is holding an apple and a rattle, items emphasizing the different status of both figures.

Modern Rome Giovanni Paolo Panini

Modern Rome is the common name of 3 similar paintings that are officially referred to as Picture Gallery with Views of Modern Rome. They were painted by Italian artist Giovanni Paolo Panini who became famous for his Vedute, paintings depicting picture galleries.

This painting depicts an immense gallery with buildings in Rome at the time of the 18th century. The Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is the original version while the others are held at the MET in New York City and the Louvre in Paris. Panini also painted an accompanying painting called Ancient Rome which depicts Romes ancient monuments.

Masterpieces From Middle Ages

The most complete collection of old paintings, graphics and sculptures spanning almost the entire Middle Ages, from the early Renaissance to the late Baroque period, contains works by Italian, German, Flemish, Dutch and Spanish artists. Particularly, works of Italian and Dutch artists are well represented in this collection. Outside of the Netherlands, the Museum contains the largest collection of Dutch masterpieces from the 17th century in the world, for example, consisting of more than 500 paintings. This year the permanent exhibition displaying art of the 17th and 18th centuries will be reopened to visitors after being closed off to the public in the newly air-conditioned rooms of the wing in Városliget.

European Fine Arts In Focus

Like all major museums, the Museum of Fine Arts also has permanent and periodic exhibitions. The permanent exhibition can be basically divided into three larger units one of which is displayed in the Hungarian National Gallery located in the Buda Castle. This is attributable to historical reasons as the Hungarian works were selected from the original collection in 1957 and shown as a separate exhibition. For this reason, the building of the Museum of Fine Arts exhibits European fine arts created from the 13th until the end of the 18th century, showcasing the development of European painting and sculpture, and the changes in styles over time. In addition to the classic gallery portfolio, the third large unit is composed of antique Greek and Roman sculptures, and Egyptian artefacts dating back to antiquity.

The Montreal Museum Of Fine Arts Collections

The Museums rich collections are divided into six major sections distributed among the five pavilions of the Museum complex. Each of them focuses on a key area of the holdings. Since its founding in 1860, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is more forward-looking than ever!

The institution, which is not a government-run museum, has relied on generous donors for the expansion of its encyclopedic heritage collection, which includes more then 45,000 works.

The Museums collections were thoroughly studied and given a major reinstallation in 2001 as well as in 2011, prior to the opening of the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion of Quebec and Canadian Art, and again in 2016, with the inauguration of the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace. The new pavilions have enabled visitors to enjoy enhanced views of thousands of works in spectacular exhibition spaces.

The MMFAs new Stéphan Crétier and Stéphany Maillery Wing for World Cultures and Togetherness will open in November 2019.
